Lady Gaga did not perform live at Olympics opening ceremony

Yannick Le Gall, a journalist from France 3, the regional television state channel, who was positioned opposite the steps, said: “We were in front of Lady Gaga’s set, and by the time the music started, the staircase was empty.”
When the singer instead appeared on a giant screen in front of the stands, “spectators booed and regretted having paid €180 to see nothing,” Mr Gall added.
I'm all for taking precautions, but it seems a bit odd for them to conclude that the weather was "too dangerous" for performers, but not "too dangerous" for hundreds of fans to congregate to see the show. Seems like they would've cancelled the show entirely if the weather seemed hazardous enough. But I'm no expert. (I have no issues with lipsyncing or pre-recording vocals either; that's just showbiz)
I saw Weird Al live about 8 years ago and a huge storm rolled in about halfway through the show. They told everyone to head home and that the show was over, and they were right to do so; the drive back home was perilous with zero visibility for long stretches due to the heavy rain.
The reason they cancelled it, is because the floor would have been too slippery, where they were supposed to dance. That makes it hazardous for the performers, without being so for the viewers...
Wow, I would not want to plan such an event without a roof. They're going to start planing months beforehand, there's just no way to know how the weather is going to be on a specific date. And especially with how rainy this year has been, this really shouldn't have come as a surprise either...
