Use a butane insert. Still refillable but it's sealed in well enough to last years of infrequent use.

The "people" bringing it up nonstop on social media might have been state actors or trolls but there were plenty of real people who followed the movement. They're still "But Gaza!" people regardless of how the idea that they should abstain from voting got into their head.

A company "accusing" someone of piracy isn't proof. Access to the internet is almost essential these days. If you can prove a person is pirating prosecute them under the law with fines or even incarceration if warranted. But stripping internet access from someone shouldn't be seen as an acceptable punishment for a free citizen anyway.

Whoever owns the network attached to the IP address also shouldn't be responsible for actions of every user. Let's ban an entire company, college, or government institution from the internet because an IP showed up on a list... dumb ruling.

Good news. Anything but fossil fuels at this point.

Nintendo Lawyers realizing some of their IP is represented in LLM training data and outputs.

Should be banned everywhere smh. It's crazy that people are just chucking lithium into the garbage for no reason...when vapes started as an easily reusable setup in the firth place.

Open AI has a projected revenue of 3 Billion this year.
It is currently projected to burn 8 Billion on training costs this year.
Now it needs 5 Gigawatt data centers worth over 100 Billion.
And new fabs worth 7 Trillion to supply all the chips.

I get that it’s trying to dominate a new market but that’s ludicrous. And even with everything so far they haven’t really pulled far ahead of competing models like Claude and Gemini who are also training like crazy.

From wikipedia

“It's an uncomfortable subject to most of the guys, so we don't really discuss it too much. The process of the thing being made was never told to us. We were never told what it was. It was never supposed to be a Wu-Tang album. We were recording and being paid to do a certain amount of records by a guy whose name I don't want to mention. He took all these verses—some of them were old verses—and put them altogether into a compilation of Wu-Tang songs and marketed it as a Wu-Tang album, and a single copy of a Wu-Tang album. We all had a problem with it because that's not how it was described to us.”

—Method Man in 2024 on recording Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.

I think the opinion (as bad as it is) is that if the warrant was good the judge thinks the exact same thing would have happened. So the fact that these assholes knowingly lied to get the warrant isn't a "direct link".

To me making that argument kind of signals that no-knock warrants shouldn't be a thing at all if you accept that an innocent would die either way because it's so fucked up....and on top of that the cops still clearly caused this by lying because this isn't a case of good warrant vs bad warrant - this is a case of bad warrant vs no warrant and Breonna still being alive.

People think emulator protections in the law are stronger than they really are. Sony vs Connectix made emulation legal, but it wasn't heard by the supreme court. PS1 games weren't encrypted and relied on other methods like disc wobble to prevent piracy...so without proactively violating any measures you could just not include that check in your competing emulator and play retail discs without breaking any laws.

In steps the DMCA anti-circumvention laws for bypassing video game / console encryption measures, which is an even bigger untested minefield without precedent in favor of emulation. And since games are default encrypted on new consoles and arguably not subject to exemption (at least while still supported) it really might be a disaster to fight it.

Nintendo is a dick but it's not in our interest or theirs to really push the boundary on the status quo. The get to slap suit whatever they want taken down, we get to play the emulation hydra game where it's still legally grey.

Honestly they're still impressive and useful it's just the hype train overload and trying to implement them in areas they either don't fit or don't work well enough yet.

Super interesting. The guy claims is wasn't just ai, that he performed alterations as well. If that's true but he still gets shot down it might pave the way for AI being much more shunned in the world out of IP concerns on the output side rather than the training data.

You can't copyright that music, game, book, screenplay or video because AI made some contribution.

The Kristi Noem one, when I heard the news I assumed it was just unavoidable farm life type of shit. Like the dog got rabies or seriously injured and putting it down was just the right thing to do...

Then I read the story and holy hell that woman shot a perfectly healthy dog out of spite. South Dakota has animal shelters, Kristi, you psycho.

  1. Take dog that's not well trained to a pheasant hunt.
  2. Get mad at dog for not being a well-trained pheasant hunting dog.
  3. Realize you don't have enough cages to take all the dogs back safely. Leave the untrained dog in the back of your truck hoping it jumps out and dies or runs away because you're mad at it.
  4. Stop by a friend with chickens. OMG the untrained dog that was left unsecured in the back of your truck that you've been teaching to hunt birds has killed some chickens.
  5. Shoot the dog because you're angry.
  6. Shoot a goat as well because you're already on a rampage and hate it too.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the station, one of the teens reported hearing Metz say "Oh s---, my gun just went off" after the shooting.

The kids did trespass by hopping a fence, I'm guessing his defense is going to be he was just trying to hold them there for police but accidentally discharged his weapon into a kids face. The fuckwit is really lucky the kid lived.

I can't understand the idiotic appeal of inserting yourself into these situations when the police are already on the way and there's no danger to yourself to just waiting and letting them handle it.

A citation with a superscript number reference in a comment? Impressive.

Cool. I force a no-psn-requirement for games that I buy.

This is beautiful in all the wrong ways.

That's not really how 👀 is used these days among the young folk, but I wouldn't expect a random Canadian farmer to know that either.

I don't think that a thumbs up emoji should be a valid signature. The farmer was responding to "please confirm flax contract" and the thumbs up emoji really could mean "I've seen your text and will look at the contract to confirm/deny soon." Although the article did also mention that the same type of acceptance had happened previously with this farmer where the contracts were treated as valid and fulfilled so the farmer is probably disingenuous with their argument.

I'm doing my part by writing really shitty foss projects for AI to steal and train on.

I agree with going after the Edge Lords and making things more fair...but I'm guessing Chrome is the most used we browser by a long shot even on windows so the “No platform independent browser can aspire to match Edge's unparalleled distribution advantage on Windows." part feels like users are comfortable stepping over Edge's corpse to download chrome anyway.

That 11x election cycles with at least one of three last names on the ballot is only a record tie.

We had John Adams x4, George Clinton x2, DeWitt Clinton x1, James Monroe x2, John Quincy Adams x2 also a total of 11x.

Roosevelts were on the ballot 8x election cycles but the gap years screwed them. And they were close to uniting with the Nixon 5x streak also with some gaps. And then after one cycle right into the Bush Sr streak. If things shook out just a bit different there was a 19x streak in the cards.

Mods could just make a filter to remove everything new anyway. The concept of mods being unpaid volunteers means they get to fuck with reddit if they really want. They already had that issue with some subs just starting to allow porn during the first api protest. Sure reddit can just churn through to newer friendlier mods like the first time but they're not going to be able to crush all the dissent and drama from moves like that.

But actually I think reddit has a bigger problem than protests. They tweaked their algorithm recently and it is going the way of facebook now, I've been getting 0 upvote day-old posts shown to me. They're probably getting more engagement but I don't think redditors are going to put up with that level of enshittification as easily as other social media where people are locked in by friends and followers.

I'm so glad I quit consoles. Now I'm just rooting for steam to get every game running perfectly in linux so we don't have to deal with Windows either.

You had me in the first half, ngl

No, most of this is untrue. Ex Presidents can refuse secret service detail. They are allowed to drive on public roads - that is a secret service rule that they can't but it's not against the law and Presidents don't have to follow those rules. And they are allowed to live outside the US if a host country allows them.

If you use a private website for your social media we just loop back to where we are right now in a few years. Even if it seems great now there will eventually be enshittification.

Preach. Make an actual improved control panel, settings is garbage. It's not just scattering things around it really doesn't include a ton of necessary settings.

Yup Twitter was for following people and Reddit was for following topics. Lemmy with all the new users is pretty much viable for big topics now but Mastodon doesn't magically have all the people I want to follow just because it's a better format.

Unless the govt wants to start UBI or otherwise guarantee a job with livable wages I feel fine about it.

If google really does away with adblockers I expect many more will follow. I'm not even against unobtrusive ads but the few times I've been away from my own pihole / ublock browser setup and rawdogged the internet those ads were next level obnoxious. I can't live like that.

Oh another thing on the list of things I think should just be free instead and covered by taxes.

He's trying to claim that companies colluded to stop advertising on X and that violates antitrust laws.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_boycott

But it's strange because this refusal to advertise on twitter doesn't really harm competition in anyway. Concerted refusal to deal is supposed to be like when 3 big bad companies want to hurt a smaller competitive company so they get together and boycott any suppliers that deal with this competitor or force them to get a worse deal.

The companies GARM (Global Alliance for Responsible Media) represents are big enough (90% of advertising $) but they aren't really competitors to twitter. If say facebook and tiktok got together and told GARM they wouldn't run any of their ads unless they stopped working with twitter that would be much more in the spirit of the law.

But Twitter might still have a tiny bit of a case if they can prove they met GARM's standards but were still excluded anyway. I doubt that's enough for any major payouts though unless the judge is crazy. And honestly I think it's still dumb because even if GARM settles it just tells advertisers "Okay you can advertise on twitter if you want they meet our standards"...but are advertisers really going to want to advertise on the site that just sued them?

Also I don't even think GARM prohibits members from advertising with companies it doesn't recommend and just offers suggestions, which makes this case even more insane if that's true. In that situation it's like the health inspector gives a restaurant a "D" and the restaurant sues customers for not eating there anymore.

Depends on what you do. Plenty of people only have to walk from car door to heated building so crappy winter clothes isn't a huge deal. There are those people that wear shorts year round based on that principle.

If it's just an installer check then people could just use the old installer versions and update afterward right? Or are they planning on stopping updates for unsupported hardware that already installed windows 11?

I'm assuming this is going to be more like a creator space type thing like patreon/OF. It will make reddit worse of course because patreon and OF already exist we don't need reddit for that but as long as they aren't trying to paywall user generated content on existing subs I don't really care that much tbh.

If they paywall my old comments that I've left up to help others I'm going to go back and delete them.

And a lot of the users Reddit decided to alienate are mods...Aka the ones who put in the effort to grow their subs in the first place...

Voat was the worst of Reddit while this exodus has the chance to be the best of Reddit.

Again I'm in favor of choosing browsers on install, but lots of Chrome installs on Windows is not the same as being the default.

So much so that you even get this annoying popup from Edge when you try to download Chrome with Edge - which should be against the rules imo.
