What is Federation, Defederation, Fediverse, Cross-Platform Instances etc.?

Maybe we are late in the universe, perhaps universe used to be a lively and vibrant place homing millions of civilizations. Now, we stand as the last remnants, hence, possibly the most advanced.
So all this weight or bodyweight training with progressive overload is kind of just a way to communicate to our body and tell it to grow more muscles and strength?
But why are there so many instances and from what I have seen they are mostly similar to each other in terms of features and such? Like why would one use lemmy.ml over lemmy.world or vice versa when they are federated?
