Out of curiosity, is there a reason that this couldn't be an Android app? I would think that there should be some way to check a cable's functionality by plugging it into a phone and a computer.

I had video but no audio.

In my 40s I had to have a signed document from my wife giving me permission.

I'm loving the juxtaposition of the headlines:

I'm in the Indianapolis area, and we do have public transit... though I don't know why.

The best part is, it sounds like they arrested him and seized his guns, all without a shot being fired.

I would love to know why this guy felt he needed so many guns and ammo, because obviously it wasn't to protect himself from a hostile government.

Soul crushing.

Worked at a place for 16 years, made many close friends there, helped the company grow from a $2M company into a $2B company. Then one day they decided that it looked like they might not be add profitable in the coming quarter so they needed to cut 20% of the company. I was my family's sole provider and now wasn't sure how we were going to survive. I did get a nice severance of 6 months pay, but only 3 months of COBRA coverage. I was very fortunate to find a better paying job a little over 3 months later. Financially it was a good thing for us, but mentally I'm pretty fucked up now. I've never had anxiety issues but now I'm on 2 different medications for it. I'm depressed. I hate my new job and coworkers. I have no joy in work. I know if I get laid off again that I won't get nearly as good of a severance package. I realize that my lifestyle only exists as long as my employer chooses to keep me employed. I feel like I not only have no safety net, but if I fall I take my family with me. It sucks.

The letter said that after one Microsoft outreach on July 22, a "Delta employee replied, saying 'all good. Cool will let you know and thank you.' Despite this assessment that things were 'all good,' public reports indicate that Delta canceled more than 1,100 flights on July 22 and more than 500 flights on July 23."

I saw a similar thread on Reddit about 12 years ago and one of the suggestions near the bottom that didn't have any comments on it is something I've incorporated into my daily life and it has made a huge difference: Adjust your car mirrors so you have no blind spots.

Most people have their side mirrors adjusted where they can see a portion of their own car in the mirror. This leaves you with large blind spots. To adjust them where you have no blind spots, sit in the driver's seat and lean your head over to the left as far as you can (basically putting your head on the window), then adjust the driver's side mirror to where you can just barely see your car in it. Then lean your head over to the passenger side about the same amount and adjust that mirror.

When adjusted properly if you can see a car in your rearview mirror, you shouldn't be able to see that car in your side mirrors, but as soon as a car is no longer visible in the rearview mirror it should be visible in one of your side mirrors. Then when it is no longer visible in your side mirror it should be in your peripheral vision.

It takes some getting used to, but once dialed in and you're used to it then it makes changing lanes a breeze. It also helps at night if someone behind you has bright lights because you'll only see them in one mirror instead of all 3.

And those indie studios are going to be AAA studios in a few years, run by people who care about making great games over maximizing profits.

But don't worry, the service isn't changing... they are just charging more because they can.

In the 2nd grade. When we got to school each morning we went to our classrooms and dropped off our stuff, then we went to the gym to wait for school to start. I was in a split class (2nd & 3rd grade in the same room) and while in the gym a 3rd grader came up and asked me what I'd do if my box of crayons went missing. I had the Crayola 128 mega box, with attached sharpener... top of the line.

Of course, when I get to class, my crayons are missing, and Tommy has a box in his desk. I walk over and tell him to give me my crayons and he says they are his. A fight is brewing, so other kids gather round. I reach down and grab the box from his desk and put them behind my back, then simply ask "If these are your crayons, where did you get them?" and he replied "My mom bought them for me at Piggly Wiggly"... I pulled the box from my back and showed everyone the 'Wal-Mart' sticker on the back. Then I put my crayons back in my desk.

I was always a small kid, always being picked on... this was one of my few wins as a kid and it felt so good.

So, because you don't like bots, they shouldn't be made available to others who appreciate them? Fuck that.

The beauty of Lemmy is that you are in control of what you see, but that makes that you have to control it. Stop trying to dictate that I can't have bots from instances that allow them.

Are they really a real group? Or is it just like rich 150 people who give a shitload of money to make it look like it is coming from many more people?

Has anyone actually met one before ?

The best raise you can get is by changing jobs. Businesses are not going to be loyal to you, there's no benefit to being loyal to them - add either a customer or employee. Embrace and welcome change.

When you get a pay raise immediately increase your 401k (or equivalent retirement fund) by at least 1%.

Enjoy your 20s, they don't last long but the person you are today is who you will feel like you are in 20 years. Don't rush your life. There's plenty of time to get married and have kids. You and your kids will benefit from you having an extra decade of experience before raising another human.

Right... when people realized that a Chromebook can meet most people's needs because 98%+ of what they do can be done through a browser, then Linux becomes a more viable option.

BUT... while most people don't use their computers for gaming, the ones who do would be more likely to want to try Linux with Proton. The recent surges will get even more people familiar with how good Linux is, and they will be able to evangelize to the less adventurous.

"If they meet specs" is the important thing, and unfortunately that's hard to know, though that $0.99 cable at the gas station isn't going to cut it.

I'm not sure if you're being factitious or not but, yes, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducts pop music. In fact, it is, by definition for pop music as it is a record of the music that has influenced our society through popularity. The museum is great, and the idea of a HoF for rockstars is fun, serious and laughable. Cher absolutely belongs in it, but they only allow so many in each year... I do hope she gets in during her lifetime.

That's the story of Fossil: great looking watches, that are subpar quality. I've owned 4 Fossil watches over the past 30+ years and I've regretted each one. The last was the Carlisle smartwatch, and that will be my last a Fossil.

At home, I'm sitting. Not just for the cleanliness, but also for the comfort.

I've always said that true power comes from having the ability to do something (pee while standing), but choosing when to use that power. Anyone who thinks that 'real men' only pee while standing have lost their power to choose.

If it's a credit card then you should have pretty decent protection against fraud from the credit card company. I've had my card details stolen a few times (though never directly from my browser) and each time the credit card company has identified the fraud and reached out to me within minutes.

Now if it's a debit card, you should NEVER put those numbers into a computer. I only ever use my debit card to access the ATM, and even that is rare.

I was laid-off in 2022 and got a pretty nice severance, and my new job pays 40% more. I wish I had known how relatively quickly I was going to find another job because I would have enjoyed my time off a lot more. I personally don't know anyone who has been laid-off and ended up worse off.

The thing is, the Supreme Court has no means of enforcing it's judgements. If enough of the people believe the Court is no longer legitimate then their judgements will cease to hold weight. If we ever reach that point then the country as we know it will likely be unable to recover.

Businesses really do hire the absolute cheapest they can so it doesn't surprise me that 300 companies had 'thousands' of employees who were actually North Koreans disguised as Americans.

But how sure are we that this isn't just the plot of the next Greg Daniels project?

Good thing water and electricity can't be used to harm kids.

In other words, those who can afford it pay. Now those who can't afford it don't get punished.

Same, I had the Carlisle and it was a worthless piece of trash. It was painfully slow, and it would vibrate with a notification, but then there wouldn't be any notification to be found. I eventually just stopped wearing it and figured I'd wait for the Pixel Watch to be released, but even then, knowing how horrible Google's first attempts at hardware usually goes, I still waited an extra year for the Pixel Watch 2. So far I've been happy with it, and I'll never buy another Fossil watch again.

I've had 4 Fossil watches over the past 30 years and they've all turned out to be garbage. Beautiful garbage.

I'm guessing Microsoft acquired them to keep people from using it

And that's also why it was designed to need their servers to authenticate against: because they could charge Microsoft more if their product could be switched off remotely. They likely built the product with the aim of getting bought up. Who wants to run a company for 40 years when you can just skim a few million off of Microsoft and retire?

Fuck my doctor. He didn't mention prepping the area, so I didn't shave, figured they'd take care of it. Nope. Didn't shave, just cut then applied glue to my sack.

The glue on my hairy sack was the worst part of the whole experience, and it lasted for 2 weeks. I left feedback but it works have been a much better experience of they'd just told me to shave.

I saw once in the wild last week and it was wrapped in silver vinyl. That seems like a necessity for these trucks.

Count von Count has entered the chat.

In order to do that the US government would need to heavily subsidize EVs the way the Chinese government does.

I support this... in my view the Chinese government is putting its money out there in order to get more people into an EV. The US should match their efforts.

The article provided the study's author and university, so a very easy search leads right to the study. The article also specifically mentions that the study followed Californians. I don't see how posting this article takes away or misrepresents the study or that the article presents a conclusion different from the conclusion. People who live in California really aren't all that different from people who live in Iowa.

I wonder if this is a legal strategy so he keeps getting sued in the hopes of finding a judge\jury that finds in his favor, then he can challenge the other cases based on the last case?

This is nice and all, but couldn't they instead make an arbitrary UI change to the camera app again? I'm almost to the point where I'm using that app with muscle memory again.

It's possible, but that is the same thing people say about trump, that since he has money he isn't beholdened to anyone. Anyone can be over-leveraged, especially the rich.

The problem is that there are some relatively good private insurance plans out there, of you can afford them. It isn't all fucked up, just what the bottom 75% can afford.
