Hello there.

I'm busy with my academics now, so I may not post or comment. I'll still be keeping an eye on my communities though.

It's a Google thing, not necessarily an app thing. Apps will have a minimum SDK level (basically the oldest Android version the app can run on) and a target SDK level (the Android version that the app is optimised for, which is usually the latest Android version). Google keeps increasing the SDK level requirements for apps to be published on the Play Store, so if an app is too old and hasn't received any updates, you will see that message. But chances are that the app will run just fine if you install it from an APK file.

It may seem ridiculous but it's good because it prevents people from installing super old apps, which may leave room for exploits in modern versions of Android.

If you just want to uninstall system apps, you do NOT need to root your phone. You can use ADB to uninstall or disable any system apps (regardless of if your phone allows that in settings).

It's the same mentality as people just pressing "Next" in an installer and wonder why their browser homepage is hijacked or why there are programs that they never installed. People see the "Block" or "Accept" options in the notifications dialog and press Accept without even reading, especially on mobile browsers (Chrome) where it asks you as if it's a system message.

That's late for a company that only has two phones, but I guess it's a small company.

I also can't stand the official YouTube client, not necessarily because it's so bad, but because ReVanced simply has so much more QoL features that I can't live without now.

Yes

You can also just download any GIF and convert it into WebP using an online converter like this. Then you can set that converted WebP as your profile picture.

They exist so that your granny or mom won't fall (or atleast be warned) for stupid scams that want you to install an "official bank app" or something to steal everything. Same deal with Play Protect. Yes, they suck for power users but atleast normies or the elderly will be warned or protected. You can still bypass them, they still give you the control. That's better than what Apple does.

I hate these types of ads too, and they're so common.

Also there are some ads which make the normal 5sec skippable video ads more like 30sec skippable ads. They're usually game ads, where they show you a skippable ad after 5 seconds, then they make you play a mini-game of sorts for 10+ seconds and then it shows you a splash screen with the name of the game which you're only able to skip after 5 seconds. Wastes so much time.

Not all apps respect this and still use its own special in-app browser

ReVanced also has the ability to remove the current BS YouTube video quality selector and restore the old resolution selector.

I've known about NewPipe for a long time but I've never really wanted to use it because of the vast amount of missing features. It might be alright for people who don't use YouTube very often or want to preserve their privacy at all costs but I can't use it.

Kbin is completely different from Lemmy, in that it is not Lemmy. It's like a mix of Mastodon and Lemmy.

You can uninstall even system apps via ADB

Typing from a Samsung Galaxy A50 right now, as a long time Samsung user. I've always hated TouchWiz from the older days, but I really love One UI. I'd even go as far as to say that One UI is the best Android skin (controversial opinion, lol)!

Oh damn, I probably have a couple accounts that just sit idle but have some info on them. I should get to it.

It would be good in theory, but it's a really bad idea because if that Gmail address is associated to some other sites, then the new owner can basically take control of all the sites the Gmail address was used in.

First iPhone screenshot on the internet with above 5% charge

The Xperia XZ1 Compact as another person suggested seems like a great fit. But I'd also like to throw in the Pixel 2 as an option. They are actually the only actually capable devices I could find. If I have to guess, the Pixel would be much more widely available than the Xperia. The Pixel probably also has better custom ROM support.

This is not mildly infuriating, this is extremely infuriating

Intelligent programming that makes the user's experience worse

I signed up for both lemmy.ml and lemmy.world instances. I actually got accepted in like 12 hours on lemmy.ml which is pretty good despite the small team and the flood of new users.

A Samsung Galaxy A50, it's my beloved treasure! It was my first phone that I bought with part of my own saved money.

It's pretty usable, to this day. It runs Android 11 but only recently got axed for security updates, so I may get a new phone soon. There's really nothing not to love about it.

The battery has deteriorated though, I can barely get 4-5 hours SOT without using 80-90% of the battery. Also, the adhesive that holds the back plastic panel to the phone keeps coming apart so it doesn't hold anymore, which is kinda nasty. I've re-applied back panel adhesive two times but it keeps happening, presumably due to heat. Never seen this happen to any phone other than the A50.

I'm not sure about the downloading part but Playnite with extensions does an amazing job of organisation.

New meme just dropped

They're not isolated. They are also part of the Fediverse. I regularly see many people posting and commenting from Kbin on Lemmy instances.

You think that's going to stop them from doing whatever they're doing?

Except only harm people who come from search results to find a lone solution for a problem that's since been deleted.

  1. This is not mildly infuriating. This is extremely infuriating. India has been making education more of a business than a social right for some time now and that has claimed many lives.

  2. Maybe provide a source from media organisations that are not this dramatic, actually provides context and in a language 99% of people here can understand...

  3. Don't fucking use the clickbait YouTube title. Maybe type an actually relevant title!?

Yeah exactly. It's still effectively uninstalling the app though and should free up space. But it'll still come back if you create another user.

It honestly depends on the manufacturer. Samsung's One UI for example doesn't re-install uninstalled system apps. I'd guess MIUI does the same. I don't think every update would come with an updated version of every system app that would automatically get installed.

It's not from a specific place. It was an old GIF I knew and I searched for it. You could search "[something] perfect loop gif" or similar in a search engine.

If I was to be forced to write that, maybe the people that read the feedback will either have a blast or be disgusted, lol.

You can use LADB, but it is not free unless you compile the app yourself.

You can use Bugjaeger instead, which can achieve the same thing (just a bit trickier to use). It is free on the Play Store but has ads. You can use an ad blocker in the background though, it's not a big problem.

I use Squircle CE. It's not really just a simple text editor, but it's not complicated either. It should open pretty much any type of text document you throw at it.

I heard it was released for Windows, how well does it work? I might ditch the Samsung Link to Windows app then

I've used it before, it doesn't work at all even on multiple devices. But hey, that's just me. Maybe the app has improved now.

This might be too specific and may not suit your needs, but I used ArchiveWeb.Page to download entire webpages without any of them breaking. You can record webpages and save them as a .warc file. You can open the .warc file using the ReplayWeb.Page app. Both apps are open source and are meant to be website archivers but also works great for this purpose.

I tried using extensions that can save a webpage as HTML/PDF/whatever, but that often didn't save everything in the webpage and the downloaded copy is pretty much fully broken and useless.

Many apps and launchers call it a 'dock'

But that just requires more effort and more work for the moderators. It's better to stick with other platforms that already specialise in image hosting who will moderate their content themselves too.

Hmm. This inactivity deletion kind of sucks. Many people may not realise it and get some of their accounts deleted. Also, people tell that you shouldn't be using Google services but what actually are great alternatives to Gmail? I know you can self host an email server, but I would prefer not to.

You can uninstall the app for the user, which achieves 99% of the same effect.

For my case though, on an older Samsung phone running Android 11, I was able to just use the uninstall command (not just for the user) for most bloat apps. Only a couple or so apps refused to be uninstalled entirely. It may not still be valid but it is possible.
