Trader Joe's is one of those other companies that is party to this. Trader Joe's doesn't believe in the rights of its workers either. I have stopped shopping at Trader Joe's and I encourage others to do the same.

You know what has to be accessible? Public schools. You know what is right across the street from the two churches that have been my designated voting location? Public schools.

It's a toss up between

  1. R telling me she was on birth control, I guess thinking it'd keep me around if we had a kid, then when our kid was age 4 she said she had cancer and disappeared for several months. Turns out she never had cancer and just said that so I wouldn't think poorly of her for abandoning her child to run off with a guy in another state. ...Her child that she was barely present for anyway.
  2. D getting me to empty my 401k to buy a house as an investment property for "our" retirement, only for her to keep it in the divorce. I could have pushed for it to be sold and gotten at least some of my money back, but she would have put up such a fight that I'd have spent in attorney's fees as much as I would have won from the sale, so it wasn't worth the fight to me, and she knew that.

What'd I learn from these? Not a whole lot, it turned out: my next relationship wasn't much better. But at least I figured out to end that one before it got TOO too deep.

People kept asking why it was taking so long to bring charges at all - this is why. Yes, the crimes are obvious and some were even committed in public view, but if you're going after high level government officials - if you're going after a former president of the United States - you better make sure you have every last detail in order. For crimes of such magnitude, you can't risk the case getting dismissed or overturned based on a frivolous detail or a minor oversight or a technicality. It has to be iron-clad and air-tight, with every 'i' dotted and every 't' crossed.

Trump isn't some common thief or vandal. He's not just a crime boss or a corrupt politician. He's a history-altering, would-be dictator who tried to stage a coup to overthrow our government. There is no room for error.

(I use arch, btw (also I'm vegan btw))

I don't know the justification, but I imagine the why is that some wealthy construction company owner asked for it because providing shade/water/whatever would reduce profits, and the bribe costed marginally less than the protecting their employees.

Yeah, they'd take the plane straight back to a gate and pass you off to EMS. And then leave without you.

Most of the followers can't see past "we're going to save America from the evil Democrats". It's not as if Fox News or OAN put the fascist behaviors on display. They genuinely believe Trump when he says the Democrats are persecuting him, rather than that the justice system is prosecuting him for crimes - his only "crime" was trying to save America from those evil commie Democrats, after all. They take all the BS at face value because ... tribalism and fear or something?

The only people in the Republican party who actually understand what's happening are the rich and the powerful. Everyone else, the voters especially, are just useful idiots.

May or may not be relevant. Statistically, people with illnesses like schizophrenia are no more likely to commit violent crimes than the general population (but are more likely to be victims of violent crimes). There are documented cases of people with schizophrenia killing or commiting other violent acts in response to delusions, but it's usually in an act that they perceive as self-defense rather than being driven by malice or desire to harm. I.e., it's generally more like "I killed my dad because he was going to kill me" rather than "I went out and murdered some random women because no women like me."

I'm not optimistic about her winning - this is Tennessee, after all. Outside of Nashville and Memphis, it's a sea of painful ignorance and R voters. Even relatively purple places like Knoxville can't seem to elect anyone other than R's who are hellbent on destroying civil society for no particular reason - the pro-wrestler mayor dismantled the county health department in the middle of the pandemic, for crying out loud. And people applauded him for it!

I'll donate to her campaign and cross my fingers, but I'm not holding my breath.

Got hired at the same time as another guy. Don't recall why, but I was in my boss's office when he decided it was time to assign us offices despite us being in training and not needing them for another few weeks, so he grabs his admin assistant and off we go to verify which offices were open / available. I got the one with a window.

"I literally think of you all as me"? Gads, of all the egotistical absurdities I have heard in my life. He probably thought he was saying something nice.

Eh? I see propaganda accusations all the time, with widely varying degrees of veracity or baselessness, but I don't think I've ever actually seen the left accused specifically of hate speech. I will admit that I don't tend to frequent right-leaning opinion outlets, and so may be simply ignorant, but can you provide an example?

Starsiege: Tribes (and Tribes 2)

Knights of the Old Republic (why not more mentions of this?!)

And Valheim or Minecraft. Both have offered countless hours of entertainment in the company of friends and family.

As an aside, and having nothing to do with your thoughts or arguments, I'd like to take a moment to communicate that the common talking points of "it's a plant" and "it's natural" regarding marijuana should come with massive asterisks, for a variety of reasons. Not least of which is that cocaine and heroin come from plants too. And that there are synthetic THC-related products which aren't generally distinguished from the actual plant products in such discussions. There are also highly concentrated THC products, such as oils, which are pretty inarguably incomparable to using the plant as it occurs in nature.

So, we can nitpick about maybe banning concentrates and delta-8 and whatnot and maybe only legalize the plant in it's natural form, right? Well, that brings us to another point: modern marijuana strains have been bred to have a THC content dozens of times higher than what occurs in nature, as well as a dramatically lower relative ratio of CBD (CBD counteracts some of the bad of the THC, by my limited understanding, but that's outside the scope of this discussion), so calling it "natural" now is more than a bit misleading. It IS a plant, but so are poppies (from which we derive opium/heroin), coca (doesn't even need processing to get the cocaine), and belladonna (deadly nightshade, from which we derive digoxin), and, well, nobody here is arguing that those are safe to consume on the basis of their being or deriving from plants.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

As someone who was homeschooled and now holds a master's degree, I will proudly own the 'weirdo' title and make no claims to normalcy. And I suspect most of my 7 siblings would do the same.

But saying we're all 'likely retarded' is a bit peculiar to me. Most homeschoolers I've met (which I suspect is more than most folks, being from inside the community) come from high-functioning or highly-religious families, with very few notably 'retarded'. How many homeschool kids have you actually known?

What bullocks technicality kept his social media posts from being shown in court?!

Per the article, the workers didn't know. The employers didn't tell them of the dangers or provide the necessary safety training/equipment. From the article:

"Dust was everywhere, he said, and he was given only a dust mask — one he said was inadequate for the job — to protect himself. Sometimes he brought a hose and tried to attach it to the machine to reduce dust, but there were no machines dispensing water as they were cutting, he said."

"Segura Meza had never heard of silicosis before he was diagnosed."

In my hyper religious, Southern Baptist upbringing, I often heard Christians say that Christianity is not a religion. The mental gymnastics employed to explain this position were varied. Most often it was "Christianity isn't a religion, it's a relationship [with God]", or something along the lines of "Christianity isn't a religion because it's true".

"Religion" in general was thus deemed a bad thing, because it was a term used to encapsulate all the other (and thus false) faith-belief-philosophy systems that were used by Satan to lead the world away from God. It bears noting that Catholicism and other major denominations always all fell under that umbrella of "other".

I contend that it's chaotic good.

I definitely feel better overall when I ride my bike regularly. My mood is better, I have more energy, and I sleep better. I got into it around the time I separated from my ex-wife, and I think it's a significant part of what kept me from falling into a serious depression when I got divorced.

I hate running. I hate swimming. I hate lifting weights, or anything in a gym. Hiking is nice, with the right company. But I enjoy biking around my neighborhood and along the city greenways. I was wanting to be more active, healthier, etc. but couldn't find anything I actually would stick with until I found an activity I actually enjoyed. Lately I've been feeling pretty down, getting uncomfortably close to a major depressive episode, but riding my bike for a while always makes me feel a bit better, at least while I'm doing it. I think not biking, due to it being winter, is indirectly part of why I've been down - I just haven't been doing much that is enjoyable while dealing with a lot of stress including some major life changes.

Fwiw, I'm a psychiatric nurse. I've read the science news articles that say exercise is better than anything and the ones that say it doesn't do much. I've also read some of the actual research/journal articles. The reality is that we're not really certain how much difference it actually makes, but it probably depends on a variety of factors that vary from person to person and based on the type of exercise. We do know that people who are physically healthier also tend to feel better mentally. What I have seen personally, and experienced myself, is that exercise helps with mood, but it's not a cure-all, and it's not instant, and it makes a difference if it's something you enjoy doing independently of it's health benefits. Exercising outdoors, particularly in green spaces, probably also helps.

Women and minorities both often aren't taken seriously by patriarchal medical providers. Fortunately, this is being addressed more and more in their education, but it'll take time.

In the US, training for nurse practitioners has incorporated bias awareness and patient-centered care concepts for much longer, so you might bear that in mind when seeking care. Also, for women specifically: you can go to a nurse midwife for general women's health services, not just pregnancy care!

Where can I buy a pair? ... No, seriously, I'd wear these.

Oh man, we're trying! Fortunately the governor's "school choice" voucher plans have stalled in the legislature for now.

Stressed. Recently ended a bad relationship, and she won't acknowledge or accept that it's over, and my social anxiety is making it really hard to be blunt with her. Also stressing about finding a job - my credentials are enough in demand that I'm not worried about securing one, but it'll take time and I'm running out of money with bills coming up. My ex-wife is refusing to do what she agreed to have done 6+ months ago (getting her debts out of my name, one of which she's refusing to even pay for) and I don't have the mental wherewithal to deal with lawyers and such right now. I'm also staying with my sister because I can't afford a place of my own yet, and my anxiety has me fretting like I'm majorly inconveniencing her even though rationally I know it's no big deal to her and she's happy to help out... And my best friend is going through a shitty time and wants to talk this afternoon, but I feel like I don't have much emotional capacity left to offer any moral support. And then there's my daughter. She's way more resilient than any middle schooler should have to be, but she's got pretty significant anxiety too and is frustrated with school because none of it is challenging or engaging to her and none of the schools she's ever attended will offer more than token efforts to attend to gifted students. When I brought up skipping first or second grade, their reactions were so immediately and resolutely negative that you'd think I had requested they start off the school days by sacrificing goats to Satan.

So, uh, yeah, I guess that's more than just how my day is going but I feel a little better having written it out. So, thanks for asking.

I hear what you're saying, and were it a college or professional team I probably would agree, but for high schoolers that's harder. At that age, their very identity and self-worth are dependent on peer acceptance. Not to mention any shy kids who might have felt powerless to speak up. We also don't know that they didn't try; one or some may have tried and been shut down by peer pressure. My guess is one idiot thought it'd be funny, convinced a few more, and pressured the rest. "It's just a prank bro" or somesuch.

That the coach didn't put an immediate stop to it is definitely an issue.

Private browser mode in many browsers disables plugins by default, and also doesn't do anything to stop trackers or data collection. All private mode does is keep your activity private from others who also have access to your device (e.g. family members, roommates), by not saving browser history/cookies/etc.

Also, VPN's can be helpful, but there are ways to "fingerprint" individual users behind VPN's by how they move their mouse and click speed and what websites they visit etc.. I imagine plugins like AdNauseum could help with that. It's a clever idea, I'll have to check it out - thanks!

I think they're alluding to the fact that domestic abusers are grossly overrepresented among cops? And thereby suggesting that such a law, if feasible to enforce against all such offenders, would amount to disarming cops wholesale.

Something something Life Guns, liberty, and the pursuit of (trigger) happiness?

The people who are that severely damaged by drugs* are a small percentage. I've only seen a handful who got that bad because of drugs (I'm a professional in the field). Most addicts can benefit from appropriate care and could become functional members of society again if they had proper support - which our system grossly lacks.

*Most cases of persistent psychosis aren't drug-induced; most of those throwing feces have psychosis from some other cause, which can also be treated with varying levels of success. Drug-induced psychosis is most of the time transient, and subsides as the drug wears off.

Most public schools have a gym or other big room. Election day should be a federal holiday, on which public schools would be closed and so not in use.

Thanks for sharing this, mildly surprised I hadn't heard of it! I'm glad that someone has picked up the Starsiege/Tribes intellectual property, whatever form it's taking.

There's Midair 2 Community Edition, or something like that, which you can find on Steam. Join their Discord channel and you can probably get a playtest key. It looks like it's just going to be little more than the LT mod with cosmetic micro transactions though, which are the opposite of anything I liked about Tribes... But jet packs and skiing are there, so I'll play it at least a little.

Eh... I see where you're coming from, and I'm generally against homeschooling as well. For various reasons, I wish I hadn't been and wouldn't do so for my child.

That said, I'm inclined to disagree. It only promotes what the parents put into it - which, yes, often is a lot of religion, but it isn't intrinsic to the practice. The religious component I suspect is where you get the stunting of open-mindedness and critical thinking ideas, but fwiw I and several of my siblings have since left the faith for atheism, and even those who still participate in religion are mostly rather progressive. I do fully recognize that I and my siblings are probably the exception in this regard, so in those aspects I think your opinion generally represents the actual outcomes of homeschooling as it exists in the US, and probably is not that unpopular outside of homeschooling circles - but I would reiterate that I don't think it's intrinsic to homeschooling; rather, I think it's a result of who in the US tends to choose to homeschool.

As for the idea that it stunts communal empathy, I'm a little bit baffled. I work in a mental hospital, one of my sisters has spent a year volunteering at orphanages in Ghana, one of my cousins (who was also homeschooled) runs a rural mission hospital in Bangladesh, etc.. My observation is that most homeschooling families are rather pro-social and fully embrace the concepts of community and communal support of one another (even if they have eaten the socialism-is-bad propaganda; their rationale then is just that charity should come from the community itself rather than being subject to government mandate and bureaucratic inefficiency), so I'm curious what gives you that idea.

What are your thoughts on maintenance therapy and medical detox, i.e. with Suboxone?

Depends on district policy and state/local law. E.g., in my kid's district a parent can request for their child to attend any school of the same grade within the district if space is available, but parents have to provide transportation if it's not the zoned school. For the district where we lived previously, a family moving out of zone could request that students be allowed to keep attending their current school through the end of the year.

Per the article, both state and federal law allows these kids to continue attending the same school in such situations. It's the school's fault because, even if their district has no such policies, the clear and obvious course would be to seek an exception until policy could be addressed to align with the law. Instead, they simply refused to meet with the mother.

Sounds like it could be interesting to try snow biking. Doesn't often snow here, and when it does it rarely sticks. Maybe 1-3 actual accumulations per year, so my gravel bike is suitable practically all the time. It's just the cold that makes it unpleasant to me - layering when it's 50F is fine, in the 40s F is doable if it's sunny. Anything below that is just miserably uncomfortable to me because of cold wind to the face and the need to adjust layers as I warm up and cool down.

Er, what? Maybe it's not relevant in every single location, but it's definitely relevant for most of us right now. House prices in my area have almost doubled in the last 4-5 years, and rents are up similarly. Maybe it shouldn't have to be relevant, but it definitely currently is. Even when zoning policies change, it can take years to have a meaningful impact on housing availability or prices because it takes time to build units or convert existing buildings.

I think a lot of people miss this. Most of the voters, at least among the religious base, are just useful idiots who don't put any thought into it because thinking is scary. Those with actual malice toward women, or a desire to control them, are a minority, even among those who get to write the laws.

"Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity" or something like that.
