Spanish guy, who likes open source software and has just discovered the fediverse (as of 28th of April, 2022). I like video games, and indie and retro music. I’m a student. I’m officially diagnosed with ADHD and ASD since January, 2023.

America is a continent and Americans are people from that continent (Canadians, Usonians, Mexicans, Cubans, Argentinians, Brazilians...)

"Hombre no binario" and "Mujer no binaria". Or, if you prefer, "Persona no binaria". So, it's not the gender of the person, but the gender of the noun.

Critical support for every coup in Africa, and for the rights of Africans to demand the French and US militaries leave their country.

No critical support for the rights of Africans to demand the Russian and Wagner militaries leave their country? Because you're replacing one colonialism with another colonialism. Should I point out that Wagner is paid with African natural resources like diamonds? What is the difference between the exploitation from France and the exploitation from Russia?

I just hope there will be a way to completely block [...] users including their comments.

Remember who the developers are.

I think it's the admin of mastodon.art the source of almost all the drama. Even the admin of the server where I am had issues with that admin and blocked her.

It is an app stuffed with verified users I’ve never heard of who have 7 million YouTube subscribers. They all do Epic Pranks and they spread Positive Vibes and they Don’t Talk Politics Here.

What a shit show. No wonder why depression disorders are skyrocketing.

In Spain, when someone says "I'm neither left or right", that person is on the right, most of the time (if not always).

Among other things, this happened 2 years ago.

No webpage + only phone app interaction = NO, THANK YOU.

I very much dislike that strategy. These are the necessary steps for Ukraine to achieve peace:

  1. Stop attacking Crimean bridge.

  2. Let Russia repair that bridge.

  3. Invite Putin to ride his car on that bridge, so he will be pleased by the successful repair.

  4. Burn that bridge to the ground once Putin is on it.

  5. Profit.

Careful with names of places, especially abbreviation. By CA, do you mean Canada or California? Is IN India or Indiana? Is SD an SD card? UK is an university now? And so on. I personally think abbreviation should default to countries or global organizations, if anything - such as UK, EU, UN.

Last year, or the year before, I was on a private Discord server. Some new user just logged in, and I asked them "Where are you from?", and they replied "I'm from Cali." I thought to myself "Wonderful, a Colombian dude whom I can speak in Spanish with", until some other user asked "How is the weather in Los Angeles?". Dude, to me Cali is not California, but a Colombian town.

This is written by a Spanish user.

Indeed. In my opinion, it's called lemmy.world but it's too US centric to have the .world domain.

What the hell is happening there? Fucking shit.

It's your fault for installing Gentoo. Now she's configuring FLAGS and compiling LLVM 24 hours per day. And let's not talk about kernel...

It would be wise to put in the post title whether a piece of news applies worldwide or US-wide, because some of us aren't good guessers.

There’s so much hostility

Same here, to be honest. Except for Beehaw, every other place seems like a no-mod/no-remember-the-human land.

And some governments, like Germany and The Netherlands.

Only at reddit? Take a look at lemmy.ml or lemmygrad.ml.

Block communities spamming gaza / war / techbro

I would agree with you if those communities were/are created to post content about gaza / war / techbro. But in most cases, those communities are generic, about news and technology, so when you block them, you also block other content that is not about gaza / war / techbro.

Settling disputes between you and Discord

Informal resolution. Most disputes can be resolved informally, so if you have an issue with the services, you agree to reach out to us before initiating a lawsuit or arbitration. This requires emailing disputes@discordapp.com written notice (‘Written Notice’), which must include: (1) your name; (2) the email address or phone number associated with your Discord account; (3) a detailed description of the issue, and (4) how you’d like to resolve it. If the dispute is not resolved within sixty (60) days after receipt of the Written Notice, you and Discord agree to resolve any remaining dispute through further informal discussions or one of the formal dispute resolution provisions below. You must engage in this informal resolution process before starting any formal dispute resolution unless exempted by law. Applicable statutes of limitations and due dates for arbitration filing fees or other deadlines will be tolled upon receipt of the Written Notice to disputes@discordapp.com, while the parties attempt informal resolution.

If you reside in the European Union, you may also be entitled to submit your complaint to the European Commission’s Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) Platform or the Out-of-Court Dispute Settlement (‘OCDS’) mechanism under DSA Article 21. ODR allows EU consumers to resolve disputes related to the online purchases of goods and services without going to court. Note that a submission to the ODR or via the OCDS mechanism alone, without submitting a Written Notice to disputes@discordapp.com, will not toll the applicable statutes of limitations or other deadlines.

Governing law and jurisdiction. The Federal Arbitration Act, federal arbitration law, and California law will apply to these terms and any disputes related to these terms or our services, regardless of conflict of laws rules. Any dispute that is not subject to arbitration will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts in San Francisco County, California, and you and Discord both consent to venue and personal jurisdiction in these courts.

If you are a consumer who resides in the European Union, this clause and these conditions generally do not affect any mandatory consumer rights you may have under your local law, and all disputes arising in connection with the services or these conditions shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the court of Amsterdam (The Netherlands) or, if you are a consumer, to the closest court to your home if you are in a state member of the Europan Union.

THIS. Now, next time anyone posts something, think a little bit more about the rest of the world, because we exist too. US is not the only place here.

How can we make it more popular?

Defederating tankies, nazis, fascists, bigots and other awful elements; forcing moderators and administrators to do their job when bad behaviours occur, and respectfully disagree with other people instead of calling them names or mocking them.

12 more...

Unfortunately, the only way to kick tankies out of 196 is to get 196 out of Lemmy. Because Lemmy is being developed by two tankies themselves, with a third one about to join. And because despite being defederated from hexbear and lemmygrad, lemmy.ml is still a free roam place for tankies from those two cesspool places. So, either defederate yourselves from lemmy.ml (nobody would do that), or fork lemmy into a new clean place (not impossible, but difficult to perform), or do as beehaw will do soon.

Can anyone explain to me why being vegan is the new cool, while being vegetarian is equal to eating meat without eating meat? Like, when I'm looking for vegetarian recipes, I only see vegan recipes, no vegetarian ones anywhere.

Kbin is a link aggregator independent from Lemmy. It's like talking about Mastodon and Pleroma.

I really miss those countryballs.

I prefer it that way, because I'm like forced to read what other people commented previously.

I'm not talking about them performing a coup. Although I don't like coups, they're property of nobody but themselves, and eventually democracy will return.

But French troops doing bad stuff, or doing neither bad nor good stuff (that's doing nothing at all), that doesn't mean they should be replaced by another foreign nation troops, being either private or not. If we agree that African nations are sovereign enough to decide their own future, they're also sovereign enough to defend themselves, or to ask for help to neighbouring countries in exchange of nothing. But in the countries we're talking about, they asked for help to another potential colonial nation in exchange of natural resources, that could be manufactured in place, thus creating employment, wealth and other benefits.

What sort of post or comment gets you downvoted the most?

Whenever I say that America is a continent instead of a country, and similar things.

OK, then let's check my idiocy.

  • Web-browser? I'm using Firefox since the beginning of this year.

  • Email? I've an account on ProtonMail for serious stuff, and Gmail for garbage, less serious stuff and spam collector.

  • Cloud storage? Well, unless anyone can gift me a Raspberry Pi, a hub and an ELI5 Nextcloud manual for dummies, I have to keep using Google Drive.

  • Videos? That depends. I'm watching videos on Youtube, but I'm uploading my own content on Peertube.

  • Phone? I need another ELI5 custom rom manual for dummies, and it has to be specific for my device. Otherwise, I'll keep using Android, but with most minimum usage of Google apps.

I think that's all.

Free speech absolutism, ladies and gentlemen.

I don't use stuff from that continent (in fact, as far as I know, Kbin is European, and lemmy.world is even based in Europe). But when I browse through all, majority of content is related to US somehow, and majority of comments are related to something in the US too.

I can block communities and instances, obviously, but generic communities are being pushed to US culture somehow, despite having allegedly users from other countries and continents. And there is no filter, unfortunately, so either block or get bombarded by US-related stuff

Like any other public agency or public broadcasting service (RTVE, for example), they should be free and with no ads.

Does that karma allow me to buy NFTs, then resell them for double the price I paid, then create bots to karma farming, be called a karma whore by jealous people, grow my evil power, become the CEO of Lemmy, put ads, charge for the API so my official app is the only one allowed to work and talk to shareholders? If it doesn't allow me to do that, then there's no karma 😝

Unfortunately that hasn’t been unique to Reddit. Outrage, hate, and conspiracies generate clicks and engagement on platforms.

Yesterday I stumbled upon this post. Really sad.

You also have mbin, being fedia.io its main instance.

It seems that it's an European country, and here privacy laws are more strict regarding to licence plates on pictures. It's wiser to censor them.

EDIT: here is an article about the topic (in Spanish).

Interstellar. I watched it like 4 times.

Is he a tankie, or a neo Nazi?

Why not both?

Too many fascists harassing, bullying and arguing in bad faith have this effect too.

Mmm, I'm not sure whether that was halal or haram...

Same thing over here. It seems that karma being absolutely irrelevant makes us more confident and more prone to participate in discussions and content. That, or maybe the lack of toxicity and vitriol.
