YouTube these days is insufferable, its why I don't bother with it too much anymore. Two pre-roll ads, then two ads after about two minutes, then two more before the end and then two more at the end. And the problem is that you can't skip through a video without getting ads. So lets say you watch 30 second and then skip, well bam, two new ads even though you only watched 30 seconds. Its so goddamn annoying and they need to lessen the amount.

Well fuck me, why? Why oh why? It's such a clean and simple app, no weird shit and of course it gets axed. I think I may just stop listening to podcasts then, much easier than switching to an app I have no interest in.

For anyone out there, I recommend giving Tidal a shot and for podcasts, I recommend a FOSS app called AntennaPod. This is the combo I use myself, I've been using Tidal for a bit over two years now and just recently switched to AntennaPod.

Even if they federated (which I doubt they will do), someone would have to foot the bill for those servers. Same thing on lemmy, someone's eating the server costs here even if it isn't a major corporation.

My most frequented community (/r/hockey) didn't even try to move, so I have to stay because I love hockey and it's the biggest community. But goddamn is Reddit filled with so much more dumb shit now, just all kinds of weird self posts, people asking if a free game is worth it, why X thing is happening (and it's something they're doing wrong) and so many subs have just turned into random people with default usernames posting about things because they don't know how to Google it. It's so much worse since the downturn and I hope the admins feel it.

Anyone who thinks about this idea for more than 30 seconds decides it is a really bad idea

That's because of all the problems your idea would cause. Identity theft would run rampant, stalking would become easier than ever before, tracking people down would just be one search, etc. I mean you truly did bring up an unpopular opinion, I'll give you that.

It's literally like that shit from Ready Player One where the guy suggests that you can fill up the VR screen with like 80% ads before the user gets sick from it. That's what they are doing now, they will push ads until people either stop watching or not enough people subscribe to Premium. The fact that you can't even skip ahead in a video without getting more ads, even if you just got the pre-roll ads. It's completely unacceptable and I think that there should be laws that would prevent that type of consumer abuse.

am not a lawyer

In Finland, the closest equivalent to this is some D list celebrity (so like someone who was in Big Brother or something) performing the ceremony on a cruise to Sweden. There is no direct equivalent however.

They marketed iMessage so well, while the rest of the world adopted apps like WhatsApp, Line or Telegram. In part because of iMessage, they never really adopted any of those at the same rate. I damn glad that's not a thing in Europe, I'd lose it if I had to use an iPhone. Good phones all right, but I'm just so used to the little tweaks of Android.

I've not been able to stop using Reddit because quite simply, some subs never migrated and they are major subs for me, such as /r/hockey. I've been using it less for sure and I've used Lemmy more, especially with Sync now available, but only time will tell.

I'm on Bluesky, but literally nobody I follow on Twitter is. I'm all for Bluesky, but it needs more people to become successful. I enjoy it a lot, but it just needs mainstream attention first.

Really liking Bluesky so far, hope it picks up some steam soon. It really is something special and way less confusing (at least for me) than Mastodon.

E: But to add, let's face it, no decentralized platform will ever replace a centralized one unless something major happens. I just don't see the mainstream adopting Bluesky/Mastodon/Nostr unless something incredibly drastic happens. As much as I'd love for Bluesky to get some more steam, it won't at this rate. People want to get on it, but can't.

It's the same with messengers, if your friends arent there how useful is that foss messenger really?

This is so difficult. How many people would be willing to switch to Signal or Wickr for one friend? And then what if none of their friends don't want to switch? And then the friends of those people, etc. Trying to switch workgroups, family, friends and all of their friends as well is a lost cause, it would never happen.

I'm gonna upgrade my setup at some point, so thanks for this. I didn't realize they had some bullshit like bitlocker in there, definitely going to disable that because I cannot lose some files.

I might buy a flip foldable in the future (so either the Samsung flip or the Motorola RAZR) because I like the idea of using my phone less if I can do at least some things on the outside screen + I like the idea of propping the phone up on itself for videos and photos. I really don't need a book type foldable, but the clamshell just has something to it... In the future.

This is how I feel about Bluesky. It's so good, but really needs more people.

Anyone who thought that a decentralized option (Lemmy or anything else) would ever have a serious chance at replacing a centralized option (such as Reddit) was always huffing ungodly amounts of copium. Stuff like this where the admins work for free and have very specific hard-ons for what they think they should allow is one of the many reasons it was never going to work.

And I say this as someone who has seriously tried using kbin/Lemmy for the past 2.5 months. I have found plenty of good stuff here, but I think I would have stopped already if LJ didn't release sync, which has so far been the only thing that has made Lemmy bearable to use.

Same here, on desktop it is my go-to. Sync doesn't support it yet, so can't use it.

I'll have to keep that in mind, thanks for that. I honestly had no considered some BS like that happening.

Some of the problems here keep me from fully embracing lemmy, but its a hard question. Some communities that I participate have no intentions of moving from Reddit, some had to move from Reddit and some have found new homes, either here or elsewhere.

I don't know how much I'll need it on a desktop that's strictly used by me, but I see your point nevertheless. The fact that its turned on by default without user knowledge and that the key is not automatically safely accessible is... That is a whole other level of dogshit, that's just insane honestly. I'd definitely save it to drive and a stick to be sure, that's a good one.

Using a platform where millions of others are as well is not the same supporting someone like that. Even the fucking US government is still on there, do you think those guys support fascism? You just keep sounding more and more like you just think its that easy, its just that easy, isn't it? Everything is so simple to you.

Redmagic 9 has it. Now I'm not saying it's the greatest phone, but it does have a massive screen, a massive battery and that sweet headphone jack.

I tried " movie woman assassin cold war" and one of the first results was "Atomic Blonde", which is what I was trying to get at. I then searched "movie two guys solve a murder comedy", the first link was some IMDb list about comedy/murder films that also had a bunch of buddy cups cop films on it and number 19 on that list was "The Nice Guys", which is what I was getting at. I would really want to know what this guy searched for because I refuse to believe he spent an hour searching and didn't find it. I don't remember the last time that happened to me honestly. Even the two times I tried just now were pretty generic (especially the second one) and yet I found them quickly.

It's not about converting people close to you. In some situations, you're asking them to install an app just to talk to you, while everyone else they talk to is on WhatsApp. I personally have to use WhatsApp for work and for personal, otherwise I'd literally not get those messages. There's no option when, if you stop a random person on the street, regardless of what OS their phone is running, and ask to look at their phone, it's going to have WhatsApp installed. It's like your phone having email; who the fuck doesn't have email? It's the same with Whatsapp, it's just assumed you have it.

While this is an asshole move, companies like Ferrari do stuff like this too. They, for example, do not allow certain modifications on their cars and if they find out that you have done them, they will ask you to restore those parts back to originals. It is unreal how much car companies try to get from us.

I might have to check it out, thanks!

At least in the past, you couldn't get banned from YouTube: They would instead lock your entire Google account and I personally would not be able to deal with that.

Again, information I cannot get otherwise. Its only on Twitter, nowhere else. Like if a tweet just said "Everyone from yesterday cleared waivers", how would I even go about finding that information in such a simple format otherwise? Its just not possible and you assuming like it is just makes you look like you don't know how the situation is. These journalists just simply have not moved away from Twitter.

Google what exactly? Specific contract details or bits from interviews which are, in many cases, posted behind paywalls (The Athletic) outside of the little bits that they put on Twitter? Literally just cannot get that information otherwise.

I think I saw one guy on Threads, but he had to stop posting there because simply nobody saw his posts there and there was no engagement from his colleagues.

Well I finally did get an invite to Bluesky, so I'm using that... Just need it to open for more people, because shit is barren right now. Let's hope either that or Mastodon blow up soon. I've really been enjoying Bluesky, the layout is so similar to Twitter.

You mean I am going to keep on using the only platform these journalists are on to keep up with hockey, the only sport I keep up with? Yeah and that has nothing to do with its owner. If these journalists moved elsewhere, of course I'd switch.

Literally cannot get hockey updates from any other platform. Those journalists just simply have not moved to another platform.
