it won't be mandatory, unfortunately. Would've loved to see another fediverse mass migration

Worth mentioning that firefish is a fork of misskey

High number of people concerned about privacy?? There's, like, 5 of us unfortunately.

Sounds like Microsoft's embrace, extend, and extinguish

This. Many people feel good about themselves for using lemmy, but not using big tech software doesn’t mean you’re doing better than before.

Social media remains social media and still is a huge time waster and a detriment to your attention span

Though I try to be more lenient on this view because not long ago I was reminded of the benefits of moderate social media use.

Is there such a thing as talent that isn’t a byproduct of a high IQ and personal interest

df tube (distraction-free youtube): toggleable options that allow hiding the recommendation feed and featured videos on the homepage, so as to reduce distractions.

To those who allow their free time to be consumed by youtube because they consider it to be a good investment of their time since they're learning new things, please try this. You might realize that Youtube really just is a poisonous social media amongst all the others and that you really don't need the suggestions.

Why didn’t torrenting become the go-to file transfer method and a must-have for every computer?

Purely to contribute to the internet archive. There’s the “save page now” button that’ll save the webpage to your account, but the automatic downloader that I refer to in the post doesn’t do that and is purely for the sake of expanding the archive.

I needed to be reminded of this, thanks.

Still, Reddit is probably the biggest and most accessible source of information in the world, written out of passion by people, experts, professors, neckbeards... trolls... uni students, researchers,

and I wish Lemmy could also become the archive that Reddit is, but if information has a high likelihood to get lost with time, why bother? It should then really only be treated as a very temporary social media which is... okay, I guess.

Profile pictures on user profiles are still stretched, and now the upvote arrows doesn't turn blue until you refresh the page when you press it

Other than that, this is a fantastic design update

Sure technology may be convenient, but it doesn’t conversely improve learning.

As an end-user, how can I make use of this foundation and their work to better my internet use?

Good work on the transcription, it must've taken a while to do.

Relativity

depends if you've had your birthday that year

Huh, that's odd, it's working fine for me.

archive.org also has an extension that automatically scrapes webpages that haven't been downloaded in 90/60/30/7days/24hrs

threads really blew my mind

It really looks like the general population is actively looking for new ways to get their data harvested and their attention spans damaged. People are rejoicing over a new social media app (and it's from facebook of all companies!!!). They're rejoicing over a new poison and that's mind-blowing to me.

But then again I use Lemmy so who am I to talk? (Whilst Lemmy is an improvement from most other social networks, I still consider any social media use to be a detriment to my life)

That's very fair. My bad, I was narrow-minded and only thought about the UI.

Right now all the apps are being developed at lightning speed I'm on iOS so the easiest to get running for me has been wefwef since it's a webapp (the other apps aren't on the app store yet). It copies the apollo layout. If you're on android then look around, there are probably better alternatives.

But the device makes it easier to lack self-control

I’m a teenage FOSS enthusiast and I’m of the opinion that there are a lot more of us here than you seem to all think.

Keep calling it twitter.

But a negative consequence of that was the centralisation of email providers.

That must have been rough

Isn't it that they don't wanna get spammed with BS under 30 characters and didn't think to leave out a "None of these answers" checkbox?

Oh okay, I see, thanks for explaining.

people who argue about politics always seem to unyieldly defend extremist views

hasn't human cooperation always been about making compromises, finding a balance, and understanding each other? smh...

You're correct and much more reasonable than I am. I've learned from you, thank you.

Aren’t you making too big of a fuss over simple humor

That realization must have been embarrassing haha. It's okay, friend, you can't be expected to be caught up with everything going on in tech.

My bad. By annexing, I meant downloading posts from other instances.

Thanks, I'm also definitely confused about what Lemmy is and isn't. This clears up a lot.

I see, that clears up a lot, thank you! I just hope that Lemmy is, as you suspect, doing the same as kbin.

All the answers I got were very useful and informative, but this one is definitely the one that catered the most to my worries.

From my understanding, the Internet Archive's goal (granted that they manage to get through their current dilemma) is to archive the whole Internet, I wouldn't consider it to be bloat.

checked out their website, and it seems great!

It's great that you're aware of it
