Unfortunately that burning is going to cause the loss of unfathomable amounts of lives, mostly historically marginalized communities, including women. Probably especially women.

Rocket league, random emulated games, and 50% through red dead redemption.

Hey looking back through my setup I realized I have something a little different. I have my htpc with hdmi going to my tv and then toslink (optical) audio feeding my surround sound.

It looks like to get my setup work had to install a custom audio driver. It’s called “aaf Optimus” which allows me to select Dolby digital as an option under “default format” in the audio properties menu.

Not sure this applies to you as my setup is kind of convoluted. Anyways when I watch YouTube the sound is just plain 2 channel audio and when I play something from Netflix it does pass through surround. Games are also in surround sound.

Just wanted to double check everything and give you a heads up. Good luck.

There are 2 versions of plex. One is just called plex and you can use your mouse. The other is called plexHTPC and it uses arrow keys and spacebar to select content. It took me a while to figure out that there are 2 different versions out there. The htpc one does ac3 pass through just fine.

Oh this gave me an idea. Kiddie pool, tons of epsom salt, filled with warm water and a souse vide machine to keep the water warm.

Should be fine. Think of all the usb storage devices like senate and western digital. They all operate with a very similar adapter. The firmware on the drive should mark bad sectors not the interface that connects it.

I bet this is ops issue. Either the vpn auto selected the fastest server (probably in Italy) of op defaulted to a local server. Op should change server to a country with more lax rules (Netherlands?).

Do it! Yeah start with the mother board and see what happens and then open the fucker up and replace the try to move the platters to working drive. You don’t have anything to lose so why not. For a quick and dirty clean room run the shower really hot for a few minutes to make a bunch of steam and then wait for the humidity to naturally equalize, boom you got a few minutes to do your swap job.

In my head: 7 + 6 = 7 + 7 = 14 - 1 = 13

Yeah basically. The point is you will never be able to make a real clean room in your home. This gets you 90% of the way there for a tiny bit of time and only takes a few minutes to get going.

Hi I’m new here. My friend has been trying to get me in for ages. The reason I am here is because my Reddit account of 10 years and one of 3 years got permabanned. And it was really for no reason. I tried to make a new account and that also got instantly permabanned. That’s when I found out that my 10year account also got banned. So yeah fuck what happened on Reddit.

I’m really liking lemmy and my iOS app (mlem) and enjoying the community. The only thing I miss from Reddit is the video integration.

Commenting to bring awareness to the ‘arrs. Radarr sonarr and lidarr will get you all the media you need organized perfectly. It runs on any device but take a few days to figure out. Once setup it’s a set it and forget it thing. Uses torrents and or usent so use a vpn. Mine runs on a 10 year old raspberry pi 2 and a few usb hdds. Been going strong with very little maintenance for 6 years at this point.

Yes I’ve done it. What sucks is you make a lot of trash this way. Also double and triple check that the drives you buy will have standard sata connectors on them.

You just haven’t gaslighted your ai into saying the glue thing. If you keep trying by saying things like “what about non-toxic glue” or “aren’t there glues designed for humans” the ai will finally give in and recommend the glue. Don’t give up. Glue is good for us.

Well you get an a for effort. But if your friend wants to play windows games it’s better for them to just have windows on the machine. I give it to you and your friend for going all out on a new laptop and putting Linux on it right away.

A more convenient way for a new user to experience Linux is to do a live usb for them. That way they can boot into Linux easily but boot into windows just by removing the usb drive.

Just jumping in here to let you know that most of the people here missed one of the most basic and first steps in pc repair… CLEAR THE CMOS!!!!

There might be a jumper on the mb but the easy way is to remove the battery and try to turn the power on and off a few times.

Replace the battery and the computer should try to POST.

I know it seems crazy but sometimes computers that won’t post had major hardware changes and the bios won’t let power through. Not sure why but clearing the cmos will revert to defaults and get you to the next step of troubleshooting.

Forgive me, but isn’t sharing files between pc and an iPhone and remotely accessing a windows computer, two totally different things?

To share files between iPhone and pc you just plug in a usb cable and or use iTunes.

To remotely access a pc there are web services like gotomypc.com (among others) and software services like vnc (among others).

1080p is way better if you have a screen that is a good size. Also if you are into surround sound (I am) there is a lower chance to get it on 720p rips.

Put the nas and router where the internet comes in at and the just use WiFi for your office and the rest of the house. Thats what 99% of the people do. All the new WiFi routers are really efficient at beam forming and other technologies to get you a decent signal.

At my house, since it is raised up I was able to crawl under and run Ethernet to the living room for the htpc(gaming) computer and it was pretty easy to install a keystone next to a power outlet. Not sure if that is viable in your situation.

But even then I didn’t bother running Ethernet to all the rooms because even streaming 4k video is viable over WiFi. Though I understand it might not work so well if trying to edit on a nas or something similar.

What I said wasn’t zesty at all. The only thing I can think of is someone went to all my comments and reported me. I’ve been temp banned from communities before but never banned from Reddit and would never expect to get permanently banned from Reddit the site along with my other Reddit accounts.

If that’s the case you can share a drive or folder on windows using smb. And then on iOS you can connect to that share with the files app. I use this all the time with my nas.

Don’t worry about the speed. The important thing is that you are giving back. Seed to at least 150% or forever if you can. Your upload speed is usually lower than your download speed from your isp.

Great breakdown. But I did want to mention that a person can absolutely walk into an airport and go to a ticket counter and purchase an airplane ticket “spur of the moment.” You may not be able to get on every flight (due to overbooking) but someone will be able to help navigate that if and when it’s necessary.

I’m on tello mobile and pay $5 after taxes. It bills PayPal too for easy payments. Very happy with the service. Can use an app to change my plan or add more data or minutes at any time. I can also do tethering and other things that some services charge extra for.

You can use the plex watchlist feature to do this. Add the plex watchlist to the arrs and then when anything is added to the watchlist on plex the arrs will see it and add it to the queue. Works great.

Idk. They were able to find my water bottle that I stashed in my backpack and forgot about pretty well. Even told me what pocket it was in.

If your power is expensive then go with raspi/nas/mini pc/laptop route. My setup is raspi with 2 usb drives. Going on 5 years now with no problems. They only store media and I don’t care about backing them up.

See if any of them support ddwrt openwrt tomato router or just Linux in general. You probably couldn’t run plex media server, but you can do ad blocking, vpn server, and basic nas. Works great for these tasks.

Yeah it’s great the first time it works but then you have to spend 5 minutes looking for and assembling all the bits and pieces to set it up again.

I use 2 of these 5tb ones for my nas and have been very reliable. https://www.seagate.com/products/external-hard-drives/portable-drive/

I have a few more that I was using for games and am happy. It’s not ideal but it is what works for me.

I want to 2nd this. Lots of manual work because software (and you) can tag albums, folders, files incorrectly and have a mess on your hands.

I like software like “tagscanner” and even iTunes. Once the files have proper metadata then I use that data to rename the file/folder names.

And a trillion seconds is 31,688 years

Don’t forget women and unborn children!

Well it depends on how much you pay for power and what your pc consumes at idle (or at least idling while doing networking). I’d do an analysis and a graph with excel to make sure. Many old (used) networking components can be had for a steal and will still have many years of use still left in them. Use a kill-a-watt to get an accurate account of idle pc power.

I have this currently. Been running steady for 5 years now. I have 2 5tb portable hdds as my storage (usb3) and all the arrs, plex media server and qbittorrent with the vpn and a kill switch so if the vpn goes down the torrents aren’t running. Everything just works as long as nothing needs transcoded. My main tv is Roku and seems to handle all the file formats so it been working fine for me. YMMV.

Currently I am trying to learn docker and containerize all the different apps to make redeployment simpler.

They said they were bumping up to the ram limit on their 2gb pi. I suggested getting a pi with 4 or 8 gb of ram.

And that’s the problem right there. That’s 12w idle power. The computer is not going to idle all the time and power consumption will rise. If you are like me and live in a place with high cost of power this will add up. The raspberry pi will is at max 9w of power. That’s max. At idle it’s more likely to be around 3 but could be more if you have some usb drives plugged into it.

Maybe consider selling your pi2g and buying a pi4g or 8g.

I understand your frustration but if you were in this guys shoes and this was your friend calling you all day to do troubleshooting, what would you do? Spend hours of your time helping him become a Linux addict or tell them just to put his computer back to windows and be done with it?

I’m a huge Linux fan but even my main pc and laptop are windows. I use WSL (amazing btw) on the laptop with a kali install. And I’ll use powershell (also really good) on the pc for any ssh needs for my Linux servers.

This is good advice right here. Unless you’re a dj (even then it’s overkill) and or have incredibly high end equipment (again, it’s probably overkill), just go with some high bitrate mp3. MP3 is incredibly compact, everything plays it, and has all the metadata needed. Seriously you can’t tell the difference.
