The fediverse is something I'm excited for and it's still in it's infancy so it'll be intersting to see how it plays out as it starts getting more polished and user friendly.

Despite the doom and gloom of AI I think it's been really cool, and one area I've seen it help is for my relatives where instead of me having to solve basic tech issues AI has helped. When it develops into a full on companion that will do things it asks them to I'll be bothered less and less.

I was using newpipe x Sponsorblock on Android exclusively, and now on desktop I've moved to freetube. Never did get the pop up telling me to remove Adblock but decided to make the jump early.

And yet some want to hear meta out before deciding whether to federate or defederate from them.

Waiting years has been my new normal for games because I'm cheap, and it helps save on hardware costs too due to pushing back the time frame for when I start needing a more powerful system to play them. It's a win win.

Suggesting discord as a competitor to reddit is dumb when discord does not pop up in search results containing information that may provide the solution. Might as well call WhatsApp a competitor to reddit then.

Having rich family versus none provides a safety net that lessens the consequences of risk taking, and sets a baseline of how bad your life can get.

It's like playing a game with check points versus one that has you start at the beginning if you die. You still have to do all the hard work to reach your goal yourself, but those retro style non check point games are incredibly hard compared to games with check points, saves, or cheating with save states.

Just in case people aren't aware Nova was acquired by Branch. Putting it out there so people can decide whether that matters or not.

It pushed me more towards degoogling. Was already using newpipe on Android and ignoring the YouTube app, and now I'm on freetube on desktop. No need for Google account anymore to look at the feed I want.

Phones are getting more expensive so people are holding on to them longer, so it's a nice quality of life improvement to remove the barriers to battery replacement so less people have to go down to a phone repair store to get it changed. The more of a hassle battery replacement is seen the more likely people are to just upgrade and create e-waste.

Did anyone use reddit thinking it was private? With stuff like push shift and way back machine people shouldn't be posting stuff they aren't comfortable sharing anyways on a wide open message board.

Always weirded me out the people who'd treat their reddit accounts like Facebook.

I've relied on https://isthereanydeal.com to see if sales of games are actually a deal. For electronics I've used https://pcpartpicker.com to see price trends. https://camelcamelcamel.com for Amazon.

And now looks you've brought another tool to the arsenal with https://fetchnotifs.com.

Awesome.

  • HDR can now be enabled in Display Settings if supported by the external display.

  • VRR can now be enabled in Display Settings if supported by the USB-C adapter.

Excited for these two.

People this doesn't affect are pirates. People who get to enjoy their media without worry are pirates. When pirates are getting the better experience and it's customers who are getting affected what incentive is there to not pirate other than personal morals. Because it sure isn't for a better product.

It is a special day when there is happy tech news. This is a day for celebration. Having done my own battery replacements some have been a nightmare to do with all the glue and hoping the screen doesn't break. I look forward to this, since with rise of phone costs I don't intend to update frequently. I'd actually change my battery annually if it wasn't such a hassle.

They are still better than meta and Twitter too.

You'll get stronger as you keep using it and then the weight will be fine.

Why is it showing people typing?

Because famous figures or organizations are the primary draw for the mainstream audience over random users. And many use it because they themselves hope to use the huge platform to promote or try to become an influencer.

Even without ads it's shit without sponsorblock for me. Not even for the sponsor spots, but the absolutely annoying copy paste of please like, subscribe, hit the notification icon, blah blah blah blah blah.

I've tried and gaming is a lot better than it was, but I still prefer Windows in that department though I do stick with SteamOS for the Steam Deck and haven't bothered running Windows on it.

Not to mention the data mining being done is an issue with Google and Meta too. And this isn't to excuse tiktok. It's to say that Google and Meta have to start being put in check too, since it's all getting so out of hand that isn't no longer just concerns of specific nations. It's an international concern that we are all in together regardless of where we are from and what international or domestic company we are dealing with.

You can't even pay for YouTube premium to stop treating you like the product for example, since your viewing and browsing habits will be data mined anyways. The phrase if you don't pay you are the product has ceased to be relevant. We are the product no matter how much we pay and no true opt out. Even just the contact lists people keep and use with messenger apps are uploaded exposing our personal numbers and names to services of companies we don't even use.

The complaint is seeking class-action certification on behalf of people who bought a 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB SanDisk Extreme Pro, SanDisk Extreme, or Western Digital My Passport SSD that was "designed, manufactured, distributed, promoted and/or sold" since January 2023.

Looks like this is for people who've purchased the drives since January 2023. So does it not affect people from before?

Just the requirement of requiring Instagram to sign up for threads and use of their app with so many permissions should be enough of a red flag for those unaware of meta's history.

Switch her to FreeTube on desktop. Can still subscribe to keep a list of channels she likes, but won't get the YouTube algorithm recommendations on the home page.

For mobile something like newpipe for the same algorithm removed experience.

Freetube has been the most headache free experience for me, since I don't need to worry about getting my account banned if YouTube doesn't like Adblock or having to fiddle with ublock. It allows importing of your feed too.

Isn't Apple involved in ads too?

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/08/15/apple-reportedly-plans-to-put-ads-in-more-apps-on-your-iphone.html

In my use of iOS it was harder to avoid ads, since apps didn't have a warning like 'Contains ads'. And it not allowing side loading meant it was harder to find foss alternatives. Of course compared to Android they are way better when it comes to privacy, but I'm sure how truly private they are since they are collecting data all the same.

No such thing as bad publicity and for reddit's case no such thing as bad user engagement. He could right in that area. As much as reddit users complain as long as they keep engaged with the platform instead of doing it somewhere else and keep visiting it frequently to vent their frustrations it's a win. Engagement is engagement.

You become the product with name, address, and payment details attached to the account for improved demographic data for them to collect. Win win.

Yes they can, but idea is that actions can be more easily tied to usernames. Sure people can make a bunch of throwaways. But integrating anonymous posts would make that process not even needed with it turning into a feature.

On desktop blocktube has improved things so much too. It has made search results so much better, since YouTube suppresses smaller channels in favor of the same large youtubers depending on the subject. Really wish it could be integrated into mobile YouTube options, but until then my hope is waiting until mobile firefox getting desktop extension support.

Yeah, the fact that lemmy.world and many other instances exist with content that the devs might not like is proof that they wrote something where their own personal views don't affect the independence of each instance to run the way it wants.

Not going to happen as long as mods are asking for it but fully showing they aren't willing to actually leave and are returning subs to normal.

What incentive is there for Reddit to change anything the way mods demand when they can't even be bothered to give the threat of leaving by setting up an alternative community off reddit?

Way this is going if I'm spez I'm confident that mods and users are already giving up and going back to using reddit. They can't leave.

I hope stories don't overly rely on them, since so many shows do pop culture focused story lines that they start feeling like reskins with the same general plot.

It's nice to see sync back but going to wait until they introduce one time payment to remove ads before I start using it. Will stick with browser and Foss options until then.
