Really excited about the new PDF editing features!

The cost of these registration services for verifying phone numbers when people first install Signal, or when they re-register on a new device, currently averages around $6 million dollars per year.

That's pretty crazy. Wonder which third party providers they are using. Maybe the identity verification methods we have today is due for some significant changes?

He will probably become partner by 30.

Because of his skills? Probably not; he didn't graduate from a T6, didn't have a bachelor from an ivy league, didn't intern at a V10. Maybe his parents have connections, idk, but without connections it's hard for him to "make it".

But it doesn't really matter for any law firm. Just being able to say "youngest partner in the history of the firm/US" is a good enough marketing tactic, especially to recruit younger associates with the hope that they, too, can "make it" while still young.

In his 30s, he will be able to work with other "genius" clients with a background in tech, biotech, finance, etc. people who successfully built billion-$ startups by their 30s. If we think about it, no law firm would pair a 65-yo partner with Mark (for any reason he would need a law firm) when Facebook just IPO'd. He would be the perfect person for that, especially with the whole "genius kid from SoCal" label he will be able to carry around.

So whichever law firm that hires him have an interest in retaining him (and avoid burning him out like they'd do for the average associate that didn't go to HYSCCN).

The blog reported that Copeland, a Republican, confirmed that the accounts were run by him, saying they were a “hobby” he used for “getting rid of stress.” 1819 News reported that Copeland asked them to not out him, but they did so anyway, even though it does not appear he had taken any public positions against LGBTQ issues that could be construed as hypocritical.

Meta hasn’t provided any clear reason as to why it’s now changing course three years later. However, it’s likely the reversal could be to avoid regulatory consequences of the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which aims to keep companies from holding monopoly power by favoring their own services. It also includes requirements for large companies to include compatibility between messaging platforms.

Very promising technology! Good to see better-than-mixed review. Looking forward trying once it hits the shelf.

When Whatsapp was sold to Facebook in 2014, they had 55 employees. Considering the app had considerably less features and did not focus so heavily on encryption and privacy, Signal can be considered even leaner than Whatsapp.

Now, for the actual breakdown, they have at least the following technical teams: desktop, android, iOS, server, calls (ringrtc), core (libsignal). If we assume a team has usually 5 people (manager, Sr SWE, Jr SWE, QA, maybe PM), that's already 30 people. On top of that, they have an in house support team (don't know the size but I wouldn't be surprised if they have 10ppl on the payroll considering the number of signal users) and management (CEO, CTO, CSO, VP), which will quickly add up to around 50.

Phone numbers will still be required to sign up, you only won't need it to add a contact.

Having setup both, ive found syncthing to be much simpler. I would probably not go through the headache of setting up https and databases for next cloud again...

I forgot people are paying for msft 365. 10$ per month is kinda crazy for software I use maybe occasionally (considering most of the functionality is already available with Google Docs, and OpenOffice gets the job done for offline usage).

SMS is dead, so they will need to move on eventually. Most carriers are moving towards high data plans now. I mainly use it for verification, although I'd rather use more secure methods.

By using the computing resources of others' servers to mine cryptocurrency, the cybercriminals can profit at the expense of the compromised organizations, whose CPU and GPU performance is degraded by the mining.

Oh boy, where do I start...

Those are great for hosting a Ubuntu server (as long as they are not CPU intensive). You can buy a dongle to connect it to the router for Ethernet, then add a SD card or connect a hard drive by USB and it's quite solid. There's a few tweaks needed but it's an incredible learning experience.

About time! Hopefully they will find ways to reduce spam though.

The article says it's to limit spam. I don't feel platforms like Lemmy (or the other platform) are particularly spammy though. On the other hand I get a lot more spam on Whatsapp, even though it's phone number bound.

Signal is pretty good in terms of limited spam, but I'm curious about the impact if they A/B test the removal and see how much spam would arise. Obviously that could only be implemented after they remove the need to add contact via phone number.

How can you ever learn the risks of exposing ports if all answers are "if you don't know you shouldn't do it"?

The post explicitly recommends ONLY exposing the wireguard port, not 80/443/22 which one should usually not do anyways. Very different things!

Very well deserved award. Her sharp focus on mRNA through many years, even without the support of academic institutions, allowed her to achieve the breakthroughs needed to develop the new gen of vaccines. Per the NYT article:

But for many years her career at the University of Pennsylvania was fragile. She migrated from lab to lab, relying on one senior scientist after another to take her in. She never made more than $60,000 a year. Dr. Kariko’s struggles to stay afloat in academia have a familiar ring to scientists. She needed grants to pursue ideas that seemed wild and fanciful. She did not get them, even as more mundane research was rewarded.

Wonder how much of the value (if any) was in the IP, which will be solely owned by a company mainly focused on maritime trade.

What's the advantage of using Bing chat over chatgpt? The premium version allows search, and you don't need to download a different browser to use it.

Same for windows!

True, now I expect Canada to install more solar panels than China has in total.

Seems like my message sounded more negative than in my head.

When you look at the design, it feels just out of place compared to traditional watch design: round, subtly ornamental, tastefully designed. Experts love to look at the finer details up close. And experts will want to buy something like Michael Kors 6th Gen or Fossil's Gen 6 hybrid for it's traditional look.

In contrast, Apple watch looks quite odd with its flat screen, square shape, color contrast black glass screen with matte aluminum casing. At first glance, it's almost irritating.

But this is precisely what makes it stand out. Can one tell the difference between Seiko and Tissot? Omega vs. Rolex? An expert, maybe, but for most people, it's just a traditional steel watch that gives you time. On the other hand, Apple watches will be instantly recognizable even at a certain distance, and irking some people is a small price to pay for this.

Apple loves to do this: after the apple watch, we got airpods, airpods max, the cheese grater Mac pro. Before, it was the magic mouse. They were not all successful, but they did stand out design-wise. And they sold well because apple doesn't target headphone enthusiasts or watch enthusiasts; they target apple enthusiasts.

And for the old school folks willing to pay, there's Discourse.

You are?
