Smoking kills 8 million people worldwide every year. I think it's worth pushing the alternatives.

An adult should be able to do whatever the fuck they want, as long as it doesn't impact other people. Vaping doesn't emit any carcinogens or toxic substances, and 10 times less nicotine than smoking does. At the end of the day, vaping does far less harm than smoking, and it's easier to reduce the amount of nicotine consumed with vaping. Nicotine also has health benefits, such as slowing down the onset of Parkinson's.

If teenagers are vaping then that's an enforcement issue, but at the same time I would be less worried if I found a vape in my kid's bedroom than a packet of cigarettes. Teenagers will experiement with substances. Nicotne vapes are way down the list of ones I would be worried about.

Saying that vapes are dangerous is misinformation at best. Vaping got you off smoking cigarettes (congrats btw), which are far more dangerous. Yes, you may have consumed more nicotine, but you didn't consume any of the other thousands of toxic or even carcinogenic chemicals present in cigarette smoke.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like you're having an "exciting" time. You've done a great job so far and I hope that the additional help you are receiving means that you might be able to take some time off in the near future, for your own sake.

Edit: buy Ernest a coffee for those able to contribute

Maybe compared to a generation ago things are better, but over the past few years there has definitely been a ramp up in anti-trans rhetoric, both from the media and right wing politicians.

Bathroom bills, legislation against gender affirming care, even media and literature bans in the US. And in the UK the Tories are increasingly trying to single out trans people, (unsuccessfully) excluding them from bans on conversion therapy. Even the PM was recently recorded making anti-trans jokes.

Last year Yougov published data showing an overall decrease in support for trans people compared to 2018.

It is better than it was a long time ago, yes, but it's not better than it was more recently.

Just think, somebody probably got paid to come up with that name. How do I get that job?

Which bit is false?

From the first link:

The key finding of this study is that e-cigarettes emit significant amounts of nicotine but do not emit significant amounts of CO and VOCs. We also found that the level of secondhand exposure to nicotine depends on the e-cigarette brand. However, the emissions of nicotine from e-cigarettes were significantly lower than those of tobacco cigarettes.

I think we are on the same page. I'm not trans myself, but I've definitely noticed increasing anti-trans sentiment amongst people I talk to. I agree that a lot of that is in reaction to increased media presence, but I also think that a lot of this is the typical pushing of the "us vs them" mentality that people in power find useful, it's just the people defined as "them" has shifted.

I'm still optimistic, but we need to be aware of these things, and push back against them when they crop up, otherwise that optimism will be in vain.

I'm a middle aged man with a family, two cats and a mortgage. I don't want to be having to fight for common decency to fellow humans, but increasingly feel like I'm being pushed to it. I'm tired, and I just want to potter about in my garden with a cup of tea.

There are numbers to back it up, in the study I linked. Is 10 times less not significant?

The primary harm from cigarettes doesn't come from the nicotine, it comes from all the other toxic chemicals released by combustion, which aren't present in the aerosol exhaled from a vape.

Nobody is claiming it to be 100% safe (what is?), but it's not even in the same ballpark of harm as smoking is.

I had to search manchester@mcr.town to find it from kbin.social, although it's not showing any content.

Clicking on the @manchester link in your comment gave me a 404

There are definitely kinks to work out. As you say, early days. I think kbin.social is still in prototype, only been up about a month or so. I'm being patient in the hopes that things will get sorted soon.

Also, your avatar has made me realise that I need to jazz mine up a bit.

The internet needs a frontpage

Does it though? The Fediverse feels a lot different to Reddit, which many here are taking as a positive. As others have mentioned, if you want a conservative safe space then go make one.

Every single thread or comment I see from you further cements the image of a good dude.

Mistakes happen, how we handle it defines us, and you've handled this the best way possible.

Doesn't sound the same, but I have the excellently named Exploding Head Syndrome. Could be something related?

Did we really expect this to go any other way?
