"There is nothing special about Reddit except its community and the content the community created."

This is the fundamental truth that rules all others.

Right? I don't understand why people on the fediverse are getting excited about this. At best, Reddit will have admins to insta-wipe anything objectionable. At worst, Reddit will point to the increased engagement as a sign that the protesters gave up and came back.

Them: “How do people even make money on there then?”

You: "The same way I'm making money off of you now." (pause) "I don't. We're just friends."

Wired articles are generally about interesting topics but take a sensationalist click-bait approach. I usually just skim the headline and look up the info somewhere more reputable if it sounds important.

For example, here's some info from the USDA:

Plastic storage containers such as margarine tubs, take-out containers, whipped topping bowls, and other one-time use containers should not be used in microwave ovens. These containers can warp or melt, possibly causing harmful chemicals to migrate into the food.

Every time I go to the ATM to get cash it shows me an ad for a service and the options are "Yes" and "No thanks."

I am forced to choose one. I am forced to thank them for showing me an ad before they give me my own money.

Now's a good time to advertise the fediverse, if you're still on reddit. Just pick your favorite instance, and tell people to check it out and to click "login/register" if they like it.

Washington Post had an article about this with a lot more facts, a couple days ago:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2023/06/27/ultra-processed-foods-predigested-health-risks/
(temporarily free article on a mostly-paywalled site.)

OpenAI scraped the Internet, legally and illegally to power ChatGPT.

I'm not a huge OpenAI fan, but it's not yet been determined that they acted illegally. I believe the matter is still being pursued in court.

What?! You mean he already gave up on NFTs?

The US version is one of the big 3 broadcast channels transmitting since the mid 1900s, though it's now also on cable:

Well, tensions were building, then there was an Incident, now they are trying a reconciliation so there will be a moment of calm. See here for more info: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cycle\_of\_abuse

Go back to your Reddit friends (e: if you miss them).

I hate Reddit as much as anyone else, but why make yourself miserable because of an API change?

Stay on kbin AND stay on Reddit. Evangelize!

I mean... forbidding any discussion of unpopular actions taken by Russia is pretty much an example of promoting their own views.

Indeed, I have little respect for advertisers and I disagree with her politics. But I wouldn't say I have no sympathy, and I offered a plausible explanation on why she might have taken the job.

But Hanlon's razor says you shouldn't.

All right, we got a razor fight!

This was a while back, but my cousin learned to program using Codecademy. These were self-paced courses using web interfaces, which was nice because they didn't have to install anything, they just used a web browser.

It looks like codecademy has a game development path: https://www.codecademy.com/catalog/subject/game-development

Their python chatbot course looks fun too: https://www.codecademy.com/learn/paths/build-chatbots-with-python

Coming from Wired, I’d hope the article would have a more technology focused approach,

Wired is for people who want to talk about technology without actually taking about technology.

the data vultures love this sort of “non-confrontational on surface, but bossy upon analysis” discourse.

We need a simple name for this, like we have for enshittification or shrinkflation.

I kind of agree, but for a lot of people leaving Reddit was a very emotional experience. Sometimes talking helps to get over it.

It's "enswastification."

He's not even rich AF. I mean, he's definitely richer than I am, but he's not Bezos-level rich. He sold out his one good creation, had thousands of people doing millions of dollars of free work for him, is a tech CEO, and betrayed the people who believed in him, just to become moderately wealthy. Sad!

Like what is .ml?

It's the top level domain of the nation of Mali. But in this case, I've seen it referred to as an abbreviation for "Marxist-Leninist" because those Lemmy admins are Communists.

If they only took money once, that'd be acceptable. But like bullies and addicts, if you give them money once they just keep coming back for more.

I'm pretty sure they were being sarcastic.

Yeah, when I was looking for a post-redit home I checked out beehaw.

Strike 1: no downvotes

Strike 2: application period to create an account

Strike 3: I read the beehaw mod's "philosophy" posts and I got the general idea of what they were saying, but they just sounded a little... odd. Like they were thinking things through and were going around in circles without really getting anywhere. By contrast, the tildes.net philosophy posts seemed well-thought-out and very readable.

Well, we agree that she looked terrible. Here's the evidence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYymRU-bfpQ

Yes! It's a dark pattern microagression.

Going to war against NATO-trained and -equipped troops doesn't benefit them. There are much easier opponents in developing nations that they'd probably prefer to be fighting against.

Also tildes.net. However, they're trying to grow slowly, and they're focused on text-only discussions.

Reddit hasn't been shot in the head. It won't die immediately. It has cancer.

Great analogy. Reddit is also like someone with a serious addiction. In this case, to money. They're going to keep making stupid decisions because they've got to have that money, and not just "enough" but more and more and they'll screw you over to get it. You'll forgive them once or twice. You'll try to talk them out of it. You'll get their friends involved. You'll tell them all that they're throwing away. But they've got to have more money. Ultimately you have to give up on them for your own sanity. They'll still be wandering around town, stinking and ridiculed and talking to themselves, doing anything no matter how degrading for just a little bit more money. Eventually you'll just pretend you never knew them.

Original rude boy ska. The best of all time:

BONUS TRACK is it ska or is it rocksteady? either way one of my favorite songs in any genre:

"Lastly, I’ve intentionally done this work in a way that will, I hope, prove illegible and hostile to summary in media reports"

lel I like the way this person thinks. Did a quick read, is worth re-reading.

THANK YOU! Those apps are so annoying, all I wanted was a shortcut to kbin and lemmy.

I had to wipe all my browser data for lemmy to finally let me install the shortcut instead of the (&$# app, but it finally worked.

It used to be really tough to unsubscribe from Prime, but Amazon was getting sued for that so they made it easier to unsubscribe.

normal FF with ublock

This is the way (assuming you mean Ublock Origin, which I understand is superior to just-plain Ublock.) I also use SponsorBlock.

because they have a solid reputation for never listening to those millions.

Specifically, if you volunteer to moderate, create content, or build community on Reddit, you will be insulted and dismissed by people who are only in it for the money.

Hmmm... maybe something involving "false dichotomy", "Sysyphus", "pestering", "options", "forced politeness", ...

Agreed, but sometimes it's difficult for people to get that human interaction, for a variety of reasons.

I'm not sure the answer is robots, though...
