The Onion isn't news.
What's this doing here?

Edit: OH! The Onion actually, really, genuinely, bought InfoWars! OK I get it.

The linked announcement is satire. And hysterical.
But the acquisition is also real.

If they're using time travel to create a causality loop, that's different than a time loop.

Time loops usually reset causality, accept for those actually experiencing the loop iterations.

I say no.

Time travel stories are about going to a different time.
Time loop stories are repeating the same time.
It's really that simple.

Time loops are anti-time travel really, as there's no movement in time at all.

Haven't seen it, but sounds like it. Time travel can certainly be used to create loops.

A search index isn't a public facing search engine or service.
They're building a common database for them to both use, as well as others.

So trying to beat Brave or any other search provider, isn't the goal of this project.
It's about creating a new index, Brave, or Bing, or other search providers could use if they wanted.

It took me a long time to figure this out.
Trump lies with every breath. Even his supporters don't believe the literal truth of his words. They instead replace the literal meaning of his words, with the more broad idea that he's talking about the thing they like, in a way other politicians don't. That nebulous ephemeral feeling is what they are voting for.

Of course they can't understand that, let alone express it coherently. Which is why all their reasons are such incoherent straw-grasping.

She's not saying Harris needed a few more weeks. She's saying Biden never should have gone for a second term, and they should have had a real primary process to choose a better candate. Which was a mistake I pointed out when Biden announced his second run.

16 more...

I'd get back to the judge today, saying we're ready to procede as planned. His employment status is unrelated to the case.

1 more...

That's not how that works.

The average mainstream American likes Christmas.
The average mainstream American doesn't own 90 ugly Christmas Sweaters so they can wear a different one every day for 2 months.

You are the latter.

Biden never should have run a second time at all. His running scared away any other candates. If he clearly said he wouldn't run for a second term, they could've had a full open primary with a dozen candates or more.

As it was, they did everything they could to discourage a real, full primary process.

Even after he was forced out, he could've not handed he's entire campaign war chest and staff to Harris. And instead had a contested convention where candates lobbied attendees for their votes. Like used be done a century ago. Then given all his campaign resources to that nominee.

12 more...

Technically, legally, it is that simple.
All it takes is some courage.

No candidates stepped forward.

Because Biden ran.
I said that.
That was the whole point of what I said.

You don't seem to be participating anyway.

3 more...

I'm not sure how any that matters to any campaign finance rules that might prevent Biden from giving his war chest to another candate?

2 more...

Oh! Now I get it. You're talking about something I wasn't. It's true none of that has anything to do with the rules specifically, like I thought. But instead, you want to talk about some broader point we weren't thinking or talking about. Okay. Yes your right. It matters to the larger situation, beyond the scope of our immediate discussion. Thank you for explaining.

Agreed. It really looks like they only killed the one whistle blower.

No.
The original concept had the first 3 digits identifying a regional office that issued the number.
And no SSN has been issued with any group of digits having all 0's

Fore more info Wikipedia is good at this kind of stuff.

I saw a law office once in the early 2000s that was 9-5. And the entire office shut down for an hour, while they all had lunch together in the conference room. The phones all went to voicemail and everything. I was working on replacing a few of their computers that day. They made me stop and join them. Seemed like a great place to work.

I can also see the irony. But I can't imagine another way to do it at any scale. Do you know of another option?

That's not why they were kicked out. The coach lied, to get them playing in the boys league, since they were so good.
So of course they got kicked out. What you expect the league to do?

He explained:
"In November of 2023, Next Level and Larry McGraw deceptively registered a girls team into the 6th grade boys league and under the gender listed as MALE."
"We entered them into the league assuming they were a boys’ team as conveniently no roster was ever provided."
"Subsequently, their first game was filled in by a boys 6th grade Next Level team because they played the 6th grade boys Cincinnati Royals team - coached by myself, so there was no reason to suspect anything different."

He continued:
"It wasn’t until late January/early February that several teams from the 6th-grade division started traveling down to Kentucky to play their scheduled games, that it became apparent that the Next Level team was, in fact, a girls team."
"Several complaints from coaches and teams were filed because of this deception."

Social media users, however, saw SWOB's statement as deflecting from another issue, one that accused the league of trying to keep their feelings from getting hurt in the event the boys were defeated by girls.

If this is this a gaffe, what is it when Trump strings together his incoherent, incomplete, and nonsensical ramblings?

This is why I'm in favor of not having await and see policy toward Threads. The safest thing to do is assume they're lying.

Threads users aren't Fediverse users. Meta isn't another instance. Even former Meta employees should be treated with extreme suspicion for years if they try to defect.

Nobody who's ever worked for "Big Social" should be allowed to touch the ActivityPub standard. It should be obvious that their livelihood goes against what it stands for.

Okay I guess. I'll get excited when I see a plan to treat the disease.

You don’t need no gun control, you know what you need? We need some bullet control. Men, we need to control the bullets, that’s right. I think all bullets should cost five thousand dollars… five thousand dollars per bullet… You know why? Cause if a bullet cost five thousand dollars there would be no more innocent bystanders.
Yeah! Every time somebody get shot we’d say, ‘Damn, he must have done something ... Shit, he’s got fifty thousand dollars worth of bullets in his ass.’
And people would think before they killed somebody if a bullet cost five thousand dollars. ‘Man I would blow your fucking head off…if I could afford it.’ ‘I’m gonna get me another job, I’m going to start saving some money, and you’re a dead man. You’d better hope I can’t get no bullets on layaway.’
So even if you get shot by a stray bullet, you wouldn't have to go to no doctor to get it taken out. Whoever shot you would take their bullet back, like "I believe you got my property."

The full range is about 5.5%. So while it is misleading, a 5% drop in a graph that consistent isn't nothing. Something substantial absolutly changed

The Play Store is installed by default, and doesn't allow other app stores to be listed. So the only way to install another one, is to go out on the net and download an APK directly. When you try to install it, the system gives you a warning that it can be dangerous. Just those two hurdles are enough to ensure the vast majority of users will never leave the hurdle-less Play Store.

It looks like iOS is letting you know Lemmy is using a bunch of storage on your phone, and is asking if it can use more. It's fine as long you're not short on space.

“I don’t believe there are any coincidences in a manner like this. I believe that Scripture, the Bible is very clear that God is the one that raises up those in authority. He raised up each of you, all of us. And I believe that God has ordained and allowed each one of us to be brought here for this specific moment in this time. This is my belief. I believe that each one of us has a huge responsibility today, to use the gifts that God has given us to serve the extraordinary people of this great country and they deserve it.”

That includes the Democrats, right?

It's an acid that chemically breaks down the fibers in the cloths, this makes them softer. Some like the feel of it. However, it also weakens the fabric, causing the clothes ware out faster.

If you like the extra soft clothes, and don't mind replacing them often, it's fine.
If your clothes are rather expensive, and you want to keep them as long as possible, it'd be better avoid Fabric Softener/Conditioner. In fact use cold water, and Woolite Dark detergent (or whatever local equivalent you have) for maximum longevity of your cloths, color white or other.

I got that advice from a metal music fan site, offering care instructions for collectable tour shirts that you want to ensure remain a black as your soul. They actually suggested using water form a Nordic iceberg, since that's where all the blackest metal comes from anyway. It was very funny. I'll try to see if it's still online.

Edit: I miss remembered much of it, like the Nordic Ice. And the original appears to be gone. But someone else has clipped the important bit.

… for you, the truly elite metalheads, I am here to bestow the darkest secrets of Laundromancy upon thee. I have consulted tomes of ancient wisdom (i.e., I asked my mom) in preparing this guide. May it serve you well… in darkness:

  1. WOOLITE IST KRIEG. Your precious metal shirts are meant to be handwashed, so as to preserve the ink prints and the integrity of the fabric. Woolite is expensive, but it is an investment in your metal cred. In recent years, WOOLITE DARK has been introduced, formulated for dark clothes exclusively. USE IT! Immortal would endorse no less.
  2. COLD WASH ONLY. Allow your clothes to soak in waters as cold as the rivers of Blashyrkh itself, without agitation. HAND WASH, or use the “hand washables” cycle on your washing machine. Your precious metal shirts get enough violent agitation when you’re wearing them in the mosh pit.
  3. NEVER USE FABRIC SOFTENER ON METAL SHIRTS. “Softener” on a metal shirt? Are you kidding? Does the Snuggle bear really look like he knows the difference between Iron Maiden and Iron Angel? Not only should true metalheads welcome and relish Unsoftness, but fabric softener works by expanding the fibers of the fabric, thereby subjecting your battle armor to undue wear and tear. There’s time for that later.
  4. AIR DRY ONLY. Dryers are false metal. The cold north winds will serve you well. But keep them out of the sun’s rays! The sun, as always, is the enemy of darkness.

Which isn't the individual single use plastic bags every single item comes in.
It's just the one final plastic bag, all the other plastic bags are carried in.

I don't have a problem with the move myself. I'm single, with a supermarket just up the street. I use my own hand basket for my groceries. I never even use a cart.
But this policy always strikes me a tackling the smallest, least effective part of the problem. Banning plastic packaging would be FAR more effective. But also much harder. So this is just a way for politicians to seem like they are doing something, when they really aren't. In other words it's pandering.

Even if a fetus a person, it doesn't actually mean what they seem to think it means.

There's no law stating one person is required to donate blood, organs, or even time and effort, to save the life of another person.

So a fetus is a person now. That doesn't give it the right to take anything from its mother against her will.

That's kind of the point though. It's not about practicalities.

There is an ancient proverb.

Good on them! This is how it's supposed to work.
Do the math on how much they made breaking the deal/law. Then round up and have them pay that back.

You're not alone.

On a good large screen, 1080p is a noticeable upgrade from 720p.
But the distance you'd have to sit at, to get much out of 2160p over 1080p, is just way too close.
However the High Dynamic Range that comes with 4K formats and releases IS a big difference.

On the other hand, storage is pretty cheep. A couple cents per GB really.
But you're talking more about bandwidth, which can be expensive.

But yeah. You're not alone.
