You can agree to a bail amount before being arrested? What the fuck? I don't know why but this makes me really angry.

I think it's because a bunch of people are just looking at the everything feed instead of just their subscribed comms (myself included), because it's easy to handle right now with lemmy not having an enormous userbase. But these people obviously know where they're commenting if they're saying that.

I mean I don't come into your house and basically tell you you're just imagining your problems. It's ableist as shit.

In this case I don't think any, because she worked in patents. But don't take that as me defending nonagenarians still working in government.

Yeah, those I do have some sympathy for because they're still living life on hard(er) mode but no matter who you are it's the sheer volume of knee-jerk reactions that's annoying.

I looked at your profile and caught some of the nuked comments you made in that same thread I came from. I totally agree, it's really frustrating to see disinformation repeated a bunch of times with many upvotes, show up with an actual informed opinion, and people downvote you like crazy in minutes.

All right, you convinced me, I'm putting "Trump pregnant" on my 2024 bingo card.

Thanks brother/sister/sibling!

(sorry I don't know your pronouns, I used to wonder if I would ever actually run into that with the way conversations work here but TIL)

I will try not to ban myself by accident.

Your kid is metal af

Yes, this is what makes you sound like a wonderful father. That you didn't see it as even optional. None of us are experts on things we haven't experienced before 😊

I find frequently even people who have the same disability or an adjacent one can say some really ignorant stuff, almost as if their struggles gives them a license to judge others. Relating to others' struggles is good and validating, but don't let it turn into a comparison.

Even for myself, I didn't understand the whole picture of what ptsd can do to you when I was dealing with just anxiety. Now that I've experienced it, I understand the fucking sheer terror that is living in hypervigilance mode, it really seems unfathomable if you haven't been there. And I have no idea if I experience it like others do. Not saying one is worse than the other but they are not just variations of the same thing.

I'm looking forward to the world being a better place when people in general understand it's best not to try and decide for someone else what their experiences mean to them, and nobody wins when you compare suffering. I hope we make a lot of progress in my lifetime.

I'm not saying this to cast doubt on anything, I believe the reason given for the attack, I'm simply curious (probably because I used to be a first responder). One thing I haven't seen explained in the articles I've read about this story is how do we know that he assaulted her for the flag and then shot her? Who called 911? How did they know who the suspect was?

The most plausible explanation to me is she was still alive when the cops got there but died before the paramedics were able to transport her, so she was able to tell them something, since no witnesses were mentioned. Second most plausible is there were witnesses.

Just curious! What is deport?

What the fuck

in 2020 in which female passengers were subjected to invasive gynecological examinations.

authorities were looking for the mother of a newborn baby found abandoned in a Hamad International Airport trash can

they were taken off the flight to Sydney at Doha at gunpoint by guards and were searched without consent.

Did I wake up 2,000 years ago or something? Am I still on earth?

Qatar was β€œsurprised and shocked” that Australia had rejected without explanation its application for additional services to Sydney

Woooow. I literally don't know what to say.

Yeah they really buried some critical information on this one. I get the point of the article about general surveillance but when people feel tricked they get burned out on the issue and trust the media less. They could have made the point they wanted without making it clickbait.

From one neurodivergent person to another: stop generalizing about groups of people. It's offensive.

This is a great description of nicotine addiction (I'm a vaper, but have smoked). I'd highly recommend anyone who's considering it to not bother even if you're impulsive and having a stressful time. Imagine adding another biological need like sleeping to your plate when after a few months all it'll do for you is allow you to stop thinking about it for a bit. No more buzz. Just cravings and knowing where the exits are.

I wanted to get into FPGAs when I was making some custom boards with MCUs but I really had a hard time finding a good idea for a starter project with them. How did you get started? Any recommendations?

sudo

As root

find /srv/lemmy/example.com/volumes/pictrs/files

Find files in /srv/lemmy... that:

-type f

Are plain files (not directories, symlinks, etc; includes images)

-ctime -1

And were created within an amount of time (probably last day, haven't used this flag in a while)

-exec rm {} \\;

For each matching file found execute rm on it (delete it).

That's a good one I hadn't thought of.

BTW where can I find out more about dbzer0's instance? Like purpose/values/location/config (i.e. downvotes). I assume you have an in with someone important to have that username there (kidding πŸ™ƒ) . I'm not unhappy with where I'm at necessarily but I didn't do much research when picking, I just wanted to get on a different server that wasn't censoring things without even an announcement.

I really like the way it's put in the post about the rule, but it's a lot to ask people to casually read if they're not part of the comm. I see it as growing pains, so I know once lemmy is past the point of being easier to browse everything than curate your subscriptions and watch for new communities it will improve.

Plus the mods at the ADHD were like hardcore bouncers on steroids when it came to maintaining a healthy community for the intended audience. That's not a comparison with db0, I know almost nothing about him(?), but I certainly like his self-described FAFO policy about breaking the rule.

Thank you!

When I was on the fire department (late 2000s) we bought cars for like $75 each to practice disassembling, I assume from the junkyard. I bet the price hasn't changed too much.

That tracks. I suppose it depends on whether I'm doing it to attract a mate or just doing it to feel good about myself.

Well, I guess to be fair, I do a lot of normal human behavior, like pooping and sometimes imagining inanimate objects have feelings. Maybe I just need to lighten up? πŸ˜›

That's... sad for him that his perspective is so small. Many people seem incapable of understanding things like this no matter what you say. Hopefully he doesn't damage someone with his perspective.

I am not that experienced with EDs but I personally think the most important thing with most maintenance is not that you don't regress, but that you get back on that damn horse when you fall off. You doing that shows self-awareness and willingness to fail and keep trying to work on yourself, which is true strength. So many people easily fall into a spiral of self-hatred and give up, but no, you're doing the work, and it's hard. I have good reason to believe in you too.

I think people like you are a hair from being as insane as the people they lock up.

Since I fully agree with what the commenter you're replying to said, I'll assume you're lumping me into that group too.

Sure, call me insane. Call me crazy. Call me fucking nuts and say I need a straight jacket. Whatever floats your boat.

You're not one of the people that can lock me up though and it's pretty clear why. So just remember that "crazy" motherfuckers like me are driving next to you on the freeway, shopping behind you in the grocery store, living down the hall, etc. We could lose it at any point!

Fear of what you don't understand and ignoring expert opinions are destroying society. Which side of that would you like to be on?

Plus, you're talking to another human being, it's just fucking disrespectful.

How did you identify the problem and get ComEd to look into it? My UPS is switching inconsistently, sometimes a couple times a day, and I've seen some signs that makes me think it's not just that UPS/outlet/breaker. I wasn't at the point where I was going to do anything yet but since you're talking about the same provider I have I figured I'd ask. I have a multimeter, oscilloscope and smart plugs that watch voltage/amperage/power.

Haha yeah, it's funny how many of the biggest decisions in life end up being made on the spur of the moment when you have to rather than after careful thought and deliberation. Or what seem like small moments that suddenly become much bigger that you never forget. I'm not sure if I'm making sense but at least I get what you're saying! 😜

Contact the plaintiffs, you'll get a much larger payout if you help them make their case rather than wait for the ruling.

Thanks! I agree

I thought it was birds dancing that was for mating. But then again, I do dance for my girlfriend. Not great for mating, but she always laughs so I've got that going for me.

I agree, and it drives me crazy when people say that about OCD. But I think there's a gap between the extremes, and if I have the potential to be wrong, I'd rather be wrong by being validating.

...

(not arguing, just pondering) Actually now that I think about it, I don't think it's the opposite end of the spectrum at all, I think it's actually the same thing. If you think about it both are coming from not understanding that the disorder is (in my awkward words) the exaggeration of normal human behavior, specifically the exaggeration. Being able to relate to it isn't enough perspective alone.

I'm with the other guy, I'm not reading that again, but I remember it was on the verge if that helps.

I'll tack on to what the other commenter said:

  • Cost: I considered myself a heavy searcher (software engineer and gamer) and have been surprised to see I have rarely exceeded even half of my allotted searches ($5/mo, 300 searches). I'm now reprogramming my brain to stop turning to alternatives when something should be easy to find because "I might use up all my queries".
  • Better: apart from all of the cool features, and there are many, there's also that it just "feels better". I don't know how to qualify that despite being a professional in that world. It's kinda the opposite feeling that I had using Google over the last 5+ years where I wondered if I was getting dumber or if the internet (and Google) was absolutely full of garbage.

It's on the very short list of subscriptions I pay for right now despite having a very limited budget at the moment.

You do that manually? Wow that's a lot of work. But I agree with the other commenter, turns out the reason I was hesitant to read the article on that other site was because the experience sucks. Thank you for making it so much easier.

I personally see it as "hyperfocus" when I'm talking about minutes or hours and "fixations" when on the scale of weeks or months. But I have a lot of opinions about semantics for someone who isn't a professional πŸ˜‚

And I agree with his point in the video, probably because I first saw it years ago so I'm already biased and it's also very much the case for me. It's perseveration. I can't break away from the task, sometimes even if I'm screaming at myself internally to do so. I hate it and it feels like I'm malfunctioning at the time. Hyperfocus sounds like a good thing, maybe even superhuman, that you can willingly steer, and that's not the case.

Actually sometimes I do, because I have diabetes πŸ˜‚

Could you pin a comment on the post for that first article that gives links to alternative articles? I don't know if that's possible on lemmy. But megathreads are annoying to me because they usually just have a list of articles that is overwhelming and it's much easier to just read none of them. Plus it doesn't interact well with continuing conversation once it falls off the front page.

If there were a way to remove posts from the feed (either everything/local/subscribed or the community+everywhere) without destroying the post itself it would be nice too because you wouldn't be deleting conversations. Then you could pin the other conversations on the first one.

You obviously have good taste πŸ‘ŒπŸ˜ (no /s)
