That's not how meta's going to do it; they'll start their own (with blackjack blah blah) that has better servers, better design, and other stuff real money can buy until theirs is the default. Then when they have the vast majority of users, they'll start throwing their weight around and others will be pressured to comply with the 'standard' they set.

The first step is completely different from anything else you've ever done

"Pick an instance to sign up for"

This does not compute. What is an instance? Why do I have to pick? Which one should I pick? Compared to

"Create an account at reddit.com" makes sense and is something everyone has done before.

It doesn't matter how simple the answers to those questions are, the fact that the very first step requires multiple explanations is huge, and will always be a barrier to entry.

Beehaw is also... very particular. From what I can tell they want to encourage and magnify the closed-off, echo-chamber part of reddit.

The entire reason I started using RES was to filter out any comment that had the words "and my axe", "this guy's dead wife", "fun at parties", "poop knife", etc.

Seems simple enough to me.

Meta: Do what we want or we'll defederate you!

Everyone: Fuck off

Meta: Surprised pikachu

Everything at reddit devolved into pushing political ideals. That's what happens when nobody can respect that others are allowed to have different opinions.

So 'people who respect other people's opinions' are nazis?

EDIT: The amount of stuff you have to assume, lie about, and make-up is astounding. I pity you. You're making up your own enemy and that's very sad. I hope one day you can have a productive discussion without villifying anyone who dares simply say they have a different opinion than you.

It's clear that you don't even understand the 'paradox of intolerance' that you like to misquote.

I mean, I'd sell all you fuckers out for a billion dollars. So there's a chance someone sells out somewhere along the line.

You're describing an internet that doesn't exist anymore and hasn't for decades.

  1. Stop misusing the 'parodox of tolerance' if you haven't actually studied it. It doesn't mean what 99% of people on reddit/lemmy think it means.

  2. I've seen more people shut down anyone who disagrees with them (both here and on rddit) than I have people 'not uphold the social contract'. Yes, there are trolls, but there are way more people who say 'shut up nazi!' at the first sign of even a slightly different opinion.

I mean, there's a reason that Linux is used by less than 3% of the market, and the same will likely be true here. The fediverse is not the answer for over 97% of people, and that's a problem.

Redditor is a thing though, and most people came from reddit. However, thinking about it, Youtuber and Tiktoker are reserved for the creators, not the users. As for the rest...

Instagrammer

Yeah I'm fine with fediverse user.
