Challenge Defeatism. Resist Doomerism

Spunch Bob Sqor Ponts

I like the part where Dr Grant just looks dead straight into the camera and in a serious tone says 'There are dinosaurs here. There are dinosaurs in this Jurassic Park'.

This is never not appropriate with stories like this.

I mean even a cursory bit of online research demonstrates that not only are the vast majority of people aware of man made climate change, they also consider it personally important and a government priorty: https://climatecommunication.yale.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/international-public-opinion-climate-change-2023-appendix.pdf

The amount of Doomers on Lemmy and Reddit is depressingly large as well. It's du jour to act like any talk of climate positivity is naive, change is impossible and collapse is inevitable. Just look at the popularity of whole subs dedicated to Collapse and Doomer material. It's exhausting trying to challenge the position of some of these users, yet we must try. Hope is an important part of tackling the climate challenges we're facing, and the glamorisation of defeatism isn't going to help foster that.

Just to, you know, keep things interesting.

I mean, the ability to generate whatever video you want without having to pay the costs normally associated with filming, location, actors etc is going to be very appealing to people like advertisers. This way you can have a few seconds of a beach for your travel company advert, for example, without having to pay for the stock footage or film it yourself. In fact I can see this transforming stock footage in general. Why bother to pay someone to make a generic video of 'people having a meeting' when an AI can do it for free in half the time. Doesn't even need to be that good if you're only using it briefly in a presentation. Not saying any of this is a good thing, but here we are..

How is Andrew Twat able to say anything? I thought he was in jail, no?

It's about consent. If you have no problem with people jerking off to your pictures, fine, but others do.

If you don't want people to jerk off to your photos, don't upload any. It happens with and without these apps.

You get that that opinion is pretty much the same as those who say if she didn't want to be harrassed she shouldn't have worn such provocative clothing!?

How about we allow people to upload whatever pictures they want and try to address the weirdos turning them into porn without consent, rather than blaming the victims?

This is fucking brilliant.

I mean, we can do all of those things and reduce our meat intake. They're not mutually exclusive. How about we encourage people to do everything they can, rather than gate-keeping solutions?

That last shot of the tail wagging!

How anyone can look at this chinless wonder and think "wow, he's aspirational" is beyond me.

Stopping tax evasion by implementing a global tax cooperative so nations can stop competing in a downward race on tax rates

You may or may not be aware that the OECD has already begun implementing something like that:

https://www.bdo.global/en-gb/insights/tax/international-tax/pillar-two-updates-status-of-implementation-around-the-world

I mean they could start by actually addressing the toxic work culture and dealing with that hateful cunt Yves Guillemot:

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/ubisoft-has-reportedly-made-minimal-changes-following-abuse-allegations

Here's a reminder that Ubisoft is a hateful company run by a hateful man and no one should be buying their games: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/ubisoft-has-reportedly-made-minimal-changes-following-abuse-allegations

Maybe they should turn that mirror on themselves. Take a long look at the 'non decent humans' within their own ranks:

https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/4/23901575/ubisoft-executives-arrest-sexual-harassment-investigation

Countries already are. Slower than we'd like, but change is happening. Big changes start small, but gain momentum. Look at the rollout of renewables and EVs. If you'd described where we are now to past me only 10 years ago, I wouldn't have believed you.

Yeah, pretty much.

Good guy mission rewards: 2000xp, Defender of the People title (+6 to all fellowship roles), Defender's Longsword, Defender's Armour set, Magnathrop the Undying as party member, 3 hours of additional side quests.

Bad guy mission rewards: 2000xp. Hated title (-20 to all NPC interactions). A stick.

Actually, not only are the vast majority of people aware of man made climate change, they also consider it personally important and a government priorty: https://climatecommunication.yale.edu/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/international-public-opinion-climate-change-2023-appendix.pdf

Mixed feelings about this. On one hand Deck Nine have, in my opinion, produced the best LiS content of the series. On the other hand, my opinion of them has soured somewhat since the whole nazi stuff came out: https://www.ign.com/articles/how-hidden-nazi-symbols-were-the-tip-of-a-toxic-iceberg-at-life-is-strange-developer-deck-nine

Given how harder it's becoming to tell apart AI slop from something made by a human...

If AI is that good, it's not 'slop', is it? I see this argument all the time. Apparently AI is both awful slop, devoid of merit and also indistinguishable from human made content and a threat to us all. Pick a side.

No one said anything about mindless optimism. You are correct, change is needed and fast, but relentless pessimism achieves nothing except foster defeat. I'm advocating for a realistic approach to how we look at climate change mitigation. Part of being realistic is understanding that things may not be as hopeless as parts of the Internet would like you to believe.

Lol, get wrecked.

Is this only via the website or something? I'm trying this in the app, and it's not doing anything.

Doomscrolling bad news is really bad for your health. https://www.openaccessgovernment.org/what-is-doomscrolling-and-why-is-it-bad-for-us/143139/

Bad news is also literally addictive and it is important to break that habit https://www.fastcompany.com/90269566/how-to-stop-your-brains-addiction-to-bad-news

I'd suggest subscribing to some of the more positive news threads on Lemmy. I ended up blocking those ones that only seem to post negative stuff. The world is a bad enough place as it is without Lemmy ramming it down my throat to. I'd also suggest regularly visiting other positive news sites to remind yourself that there is good news happening, you just don't hear about it from the normal places. Certainly helps put things into perspective. https://www.groovnow.com/blog/where-to-find-good-news-online

It's important to try and stay happy, friend, now more than ever.

Address the issue at the source. Find out why these people are willing to risk their lives to leave and try and fix that. At the very least you could create a safe encampment in their home country where they can go to live, receive aid, food, housing etc. Get the UN involved to protect it or something.

This is kinda the same issue as with arresting homeless people for sleeping rough - it addresses (poorly) the symptom, not the cause.

In case you needed another reason not to by this collage of shite, here's a reminder that Ubisoft is a hateful company run by a hateful man and no one should be buying their games anyway: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/ubisoft-has-reportedly-made-minimal-changes-following-abuse-allegations

For me it was how seriously Eternal took itself. Doom 2016 had a story but Doom guy didn't care and was just there to kill demons. It was a running joke how little he gave a shit. Then suddenly in Eternal he can talk, was some kind of Chosen one and there's this grandiose story with Heaven etc and it's all way too up itself. I just want to shoot Demons. That's it. Don't try and make it more than it needs to be.

Let's push for surgical equipment to be made more environmentally friendly, rather than dismiss a global iniative to reduce plastics

Also, sterilisation isn't dependent on the equipment being made of plastics

https://www.cdc.gov/infection-control/hcp/disinfection-sterilization/sterilizing-practices.html

What the actual fuck is a 'S type' screw? What purpose does that have that another normal screw type cannot provide? What madness is this?!
