Admin for Lemmy.pro

Dude I was away on vacation chill. :-)

Ok now I'm embarrassed about how strongly I pitched myself to get on lemmy.ml. I was like overcaffeinated on the first five minutes of a blind date!

Who cares what they do? Care what we do.

Yay Lemmy.world, you kicked yourself in the dick, congrats.

For example, lemmy.world are pissed at being de-federated because it excludes them from Beehaw communities.

Are they, though? I’ve read a lot about it, and everyone over there seems to more or less understand it, kind of just shrug about it now, and have moved on. Lemmy world sees it’s bigger than beehaw now, has tons of its own content, still has access everywhere else and will be fine.

I think it does matter, actually, as some instances get blocked and unfederated. But, there would still be so much access elsewhere it may not matter much. Generally, I would take a best guess at a first instance, see how it goes, and be open to making different account elsewhere as needed.

Now they think it? Nice, how about back when they invaded a country who was sitting there peacefully for no f’ing reason?

Aye great read and very illuminating. We gotta protect the fediverse from corporate insidious destruction. This quote stood out to me:

And because there were far more Google talk users than "true XMPP" users, there was little room for "not caring about Google talk users". Newcomers discovering XMPP and not being Google talk users themselves had very frustrating experience because most of their contact were Google Talk users. They thought they could communicate easily with them but it was basically a degraded version of what they had while using Google talk itself. A typical XMPP roster was mainly composed of Google Talk users with a few geeks.

In 2013, Google realised that most XMPP interactions were between Google Talk users anyway. They didn’t care about respecting a protocol they were not 100% in control. So they pulled the plug and announced they would not be federated anymore. And started a long quest to create a messenger, starting with Hangout (which was followed by Allo, Duo. I lost count after that).

But as more than one arrogant CEO has discovered, when you kick your users in the teeth, the effects can be rather longer-lasting than you might have hoped. Huffman has not only done this, but done the same to moderators and third-party app developers, both of whom have played a significant role in driving Reddit’s popularity.

Aye, these journalists aren’t pulling their punches!

UK billionaire Hamish Harding, who holds three Guinness World Records and was both in space and in the lowest depth of the Mariana Trench, is one of the people currently on board the Titan.

Yikes, that’ll be some big trouble for them

Hold up - can anyone else read many of the comments in this thread and notice that many seem to be bots, all repeating comments by other users but slightly changed as if by AI and automated?

The commentary in this thread reads as very unnatural. (I agree with the skepticism of Google, it’s not that, it’s the syntax of the thread).

Yeah, these developer guys seem great, I’ll donate for sure. I love their vision.

And we should always call them out on it, too.

Adding on to the other person saying “to be fair”, you gotta sign a waiver when doing nearly anything with any risk: renting a moped, scuba diving, horseback riding, zip lining, any random thing has risks.

You sound like a great and super reasonable person. Reddit was lucky to have your help and it’s a shame they don’t appreciate you and mods like you more.

I’m testing Memmy and it’s rapidly being amazing, super impressed

Also wishing for an easier way to do this, manually subscribed to many to help populate our small instance.

I'm still bitter about a great post I made, which had a great discussion going, being removed on r/fitness for some obscure BS, just inane illogical reason. The mods in that sub were notoriously terrible, and is why there were a bunch of spinoff subs.

I think maybe you might get bored with things and that’s normal and ok, but you want to stick with good habits right so here is a fix. Take the weightlifting, you want to do it to be in shape, right? Well, there are many ways to get in shape you might also like. For me for example I go through phases of being interested in one thing or another, like weightlifting, cycling, swimming, archery, sailing.

I used to feel guilty about not being consistent with one enough, but then realized screw it, just do what I’m in the mood for and don’t be hard on myself - but to do something. So, I have a selection to choose from depending on mood and motivation. Motivation is at the lowest? Just go for a walk.

Same can be for studying: I can read, watch courses, or do hands-on work depending on mood, etc.

Dude what the f, the pandemic was real as heck.

Everyone says it's a great idea, but I'd say these counterpoints:

  • If you're going for any type of "business manager, sales or leadership" role, failing at a startup isn't a winning look. Yes, I know it's normal to fail at startups and later succeed, I've done it, it's true, but it's still selling a loss rather than selling a win.

  • You better be well-prepared to completely describe that failed startup and why it didn't work out.Ideally you can describe well the lessons learned from it, and how they could have been overcome with better luck, circumstances and another chance

  • It's just lying and not great, I'd rather polish whatever the truth is than making something up.

Oh nice I liked that subreddit too, will join

Absolutely, very vigilant. I want nothing from the bad corps. and especially just here. Though I use some things from some of them, try to keep it minimal.

In the dark theme, the super bright yellow is distracting focus away from the content.

Yes, works well, no issue.

Oh my, if they were really brave they would un-ban all the supposed liberals that ever slightly ruffled their feathers.

So they can overwhelm it, when they become the majority of the users they become in charge with the loudest voice. Then they steer it their way or make sure it dies.

I just upvoted you from Memmy on Lemmy, it’s nice!

Thirsty!

Using different accounts to route around and still access content at instances that defederated from your original account’s instance.

The plot thickens! We will be watching his career with great interest.

She’s going to take away your tendies, best be good!

In case anyone is just passing by and didn’t check out the link, and doesn’t know Democracy Now! , please give them a look, it’s super great reporting presented well, a new favorite for me. Don’t know how they don’t have more subscribers

Wow that’s interesting. For me as a consumer that would negate the value of the registrar - I would probably be wrong, but as a consumer maybe would have assumed that domains bought there have some easier integration into the Google ecosystem, with some convenience benefit even if small.

Will they still? I don’t use Squarespace (but a lot of people must be, for them to have that much pull, damn) but would they still have such benefit? I guess the benefit is Squarespace integration.

This includes Google’s special TLDs they own and administer? Article didn’t say.

More like very infuriating, I pay for premium too, if I see ads I’ll be pissed!

  • Identity management should be separate from content

100% this, it’s kind of weird that it’s not.

Just like you thought of having your own instance for a custom set of content with independence, I made my own instance for pretty much an identity base I can maybe control well.

We’ll try to make a good community or two, but I don’t know if I’m good enough or have enough time to grow and moderate one well.

You copy any community address such that it looks like this, a community at our instance for example:

!cybersecurity@lemmy.pro

And return to being back on your own instance (Lemmy.world it seems) and are logged in.

In your main menu there is a small search icon, tap that and enter the address like above and hit search. It can take some time to appear these days, but eventually the community link will show up, maybe at the bottom under posts that included it.

This hit sidebar, and then can find join and comment

I was ok with some ads also, and still would be. What grinds my gears is the tracking… I don’t want the tracking.

https://lemmyverse.net/communities it’s new and much easier to copy paste from

Depriving the libs of a favored platform via making it conservative and unruly, and weakening its democratic potential against authoritarian states like Saudi Arabia, is the theory.
