Write several different versions of the assignment each containing pieces of what the students need to do to pass. Give the different versions out randomly to the students and break them up into small groups to discuss what they're supposed to be doing.

Instruct the students to compare their handouts and look for commonalities that might suggest what the assignment actually is then have each group present their findings to the class with a small Q&A and point out where students were lead astray.

You could also find a real news story about a highly polarized topic and pull articles on it with differing takes (nothing current). Have the students write a short essay about what actually happened and what opinions the author shared but presented as facts.

Of the possible ways I could die prematurely I think I would be fine dying because what I believe is too dangerous to be allowed to continue. For one, if I'm dead, I no longer have to deal with the soul crushing reality we live in. But more than that I would honestly love it if anyone cared enough about me to fry me to a crisp in the first place. I'm lonely and disenfranchised enough, even being hated and feared sounds kind of nice because at least someone cares.

I sincerely hope his plea goes unanswered. I might be mixing up a few empty suits, but wasn't mitch the guy that played chicken with shutting down the government during the Obama administration and was yhe leading voice in the "the scary brown man can't disrupt our plans for the court" bullshit that happened during Obama's time in office.

Shame we don't live in a just world.

Pfft, apps have to earn notifications. Do you want any notifications from a grocery app? Unless it could check the stock of my local grocery store and let me know if an unpurchased item becomes out of stock or if I can share it with a roomate and they add things to it. But even then, how much does that really matter?

This feels like an onion story

Nonviolence is a lofty, and unattainable ideal. Unless you can create something that prevents violence in an absolute, physical sense or can successfully breed out the sadistic elements of humanity it will forever be subject to the whims of charismatic violent people. World history, at least from the perspective of governing authority, is nothing but physical and psychological violence.

The Buddhists would tell you that life is duhkah (suffering). Trying to force any order onto only increases suffering. The french existentialists would tell them that the only thing you can do about it is to laugh in the face of the absurdity of existence. Then they'd go to a bar and the buddhists would watch the existentialists drink themselves to oblivion respectfully and with a detached interest.

Anarchism, nonviolence, and philosophy in general, rarely align with your subjective lived experience. The best way to deal with Nazis is not to punch them, but to live your life the best you can and try to have as much fun with other humans as is possible. If you engage with them on their terms, those of violence and hate, they've already won. Hug a nazi, especially if you're part of a demographic they hate. Treat them like you would a slow child. Education, empathy, and kindness beat the nazi next door. Unfortunately though once they establish their fourth Reich like it seems they are close to, you have to wield collective hard power (tanks, predator drones, and boots on the ground).

You, the human reading this, will accomplish nothing by punching a nazi, hug them or ignore them until it's time to fight them collectively.

I sincerely doubt I would ever be within scent range of him.

Well to be fair Pudding Fingers Cruz isn't Ohio's problem.

Edit: As a commenter observed, Pudding Fingers is actually Ron Desantis. Cancun Cruz would be more accurate

I streamed it while I was working on other things but I thought it was pretty hilarious. Kamala seemed to be intentionally pushing Trumps buttons to derail him and he just could not accept that he is not universally loved.

Honestly though, given how Trump lies and Kamala was putting on a show the whole thing seemed so cynical and pointless. I've watched every presidential and vice presidential debate since Bush Jr.'s second term even in the "good ol' days" when it wasn't just a sound bite circus very rarely was a president even able to achieve the lofty goals they pitched the American people on.

The whole thing is farcical in 2024. The lack of shared reality the Trump era has ushered in makes it next to impossible to trust anything a politician says. Kamala had spunk and moxy and was very down to earth and likeable, but policy wise she made a lot of statements the presidency doesn't have the power to deliver on. Even with the insane power the supreme court gave the executive branch a few months ago.

Trump was Trump. It's pretty clear how much his brain has rotted when you compare this debate with the one he had with Clinton. But otherwise you can't trust a single word he says. His position on any matter is irrelevant because he'll retcon it later if it's inconvenient. Meanwhile Kamala vowed to continue helping our frenemies do some ethnic cleansing and spent most of the debate posturing for the idiots to stupid to already have an opinion.

I think there is just a portion of humans that love feeling morally superior, I imagine if annoying vegans or open source zealots tried crossfit they'd never shut up about that either.

A perfect example of the meme.

Lol, not the dark forest the bright asshole. How hilarious would it be if the universe was full of life but everyone thought we were assholes and were trying to avoid us.

Software, 1,000%. I love linux and daily drive it. But when I have videos to edit, photos to rework, or collateral to design I have a windows laptop with professional grade tools to do the job.

I'm sorry, gimp is hot garbage. There isn't a pro-grade, open source video editing tool or anything close. Inkscape is useable in a pinch. Scribus is useless.

Not everyone is a multimedia creative professional, but most software on linux never quite have the features you need, are no longer maintained, or will be useful in ten years.

That said, I'd still rather break out the laptop when doing client work than daily drive MacOS or Windows 11. Either way the barrier for most users is that linux almost works.

Oh, so that's where the creator of ReiserFS got the idea.

News headlines won't change national culture or policy. The pro-policing subset of America is large and has a lot of dark money supporting. Private prisons and the handful of companies that support them, weapons companies who have seen record profits because we militarized our police after 9/11, and fascist sympathizers and supports all want things like that to happen.

Unless you, me, and everyone else who cares about the issue called our representatives daily to demand action, nothing will change. Even if every single person who wanted police reform in the US called their federal and local representatives demanding change, there is still a good chance the pro-police-brutality club would still have more influence.

I mean you're not wrong (I live in Texas), but there is nothing Ohio state law can do about him is what I mean.

The fuckery Abbott and his cronies get up to in Austin basically ensures we're stuck with him.

Sure and I would imagine most linux users, vegans, and crossfitters are like you. But those three all have notably annoying individuals in thier ranks and I was meaning that annoying people are annoying, not that there is anything wrong with veganism, open source, or physical health

Nothing, the point I was making is that annoying vegans and linux users would be annoying know-it-alls who never shut up about what they love and feel strongly about regardless of what activity they engage in. Crossfit also has zealots that are famously annoying, so it seemed like an easy way to illustrate my point without getting in the weeds like I have done now. Nothing to do with moral philosophy, annoying people are annoying.

Machoke me daddy.

Embrace, extend, extinguish.

RSS won't solve OP's problem. Most sites have a single feed with all their articles, if they have an rss feed at all (can't sell ads in an rss feed).

Aside from maybe just the raw AP feed (which is free through their app) I'm not sure any modern news room just publishes the type of feed OP might be looking for.

The theoretical benefits of Gentoo or Arch are completely negated by the fussy nature of those systems. You have more control, but to get it you have to do a lot more work. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just that's the main difference between arch, gentoo, and a more streamlined distro.

Really it depends on what you want out of your distro. If total control is what you're after, then gentoo is only the beginning of a deep k hole that ends in LFS and a ricing habit. Personally I like using my computer as a tool to do other stuff so anything more hands on than debian stable just gets on my nerves or turns me into a ricing addict. But I had to install gentoo to figure that out.

Gentoo is a filter. You either love it and continue diving or learn you want something else from your OS.

Megan is Missing (2011) is one of the most horrifying films I've ever seen. Fair warning though, the last ten minutes are excruciatingly painful to watch. It is not for the faint of heart.

In the gore porn genre Cannibal Holocaust (1980) and Hostel (2005) are vile, but so pointlessly gorey the actual horror (the brutality of men) is almost entirely lost.

Funny Games (1997), or the 2007 American remake for those who don't love subtitles, is another unnerving portrayal of ultra violence. It's not gore porn, but is graphic. The original version's pacing will make you squirm in your seat.

Hush (2016) and Creep (2014) are two of my movie-night-with-friends films. Still very much about the human monster, but not overly graphic and prefers to build by making the viewer a partial participant. You have to be a certain level of broken to enjoy some of the others on my list, but these two are disney movies compared to Cannibal Holocaust.

100% yeah. I guess I mean that OP is already frustrated by noise in their news sources, rss doesn't solve curation, which is what it sounds like people think rss does. But if every story you're shown needs to be relevant to your interests rss isn't going to fix that.

Even the perfect news outlet that OP describes is going to have tons of boring stuff. Social media tried solving it with algorithms and will probably move on to AI driven feeds in 18 months, but their profit motive spoils the effort.

Then again I've thought about curation vs. aggregation maybe a bit too much.

On a technical level, no. You're right. It would not be possible to capture the protocol entirely. But meta has serious cash to spend on marketing Threads. If they can capture enough of the ActivityPub market and were to collab with Bluesky and use their protocol (I forget the name), or make their own, it's only a matter of time before the drop activitypub and force users either to join threads or lose access to their users.

Threads and Bluesky are kind of an existential threat to ActivityPub given Meta and Twitter's track record with Open Graph, bootstrap, and public api's.

As a kid, I sucked at who's that pokemon. You're right of course, but in my defense I'm not worried about the specific lore of any of them.

Pfft you might be, that just makes it funnier to me. Chuck Norris is an actor and a white guy who knows karate. That's already like the height of unseriousness, add poo-brained conservatism and it's comedy gold. Like have you ever watched an interview with him. He is 100% that guy who talks about his hands being registered weapons but has never been in a fight as an adult. The point of those memes was that he was a washed up joke.

What would you have us do? Paxton isn't going anywhere anytime soon and Texans do not have the power to recall officials. We can't protest because in 2023 they passed a law making basically all protests illegal.

Even if Texas goes blue Abbott and Paxton are still in office because they're not up for reelection this year. Plus the state is so gerrymandered, even if it did go blue nationally, locally the dems probably couldn't retake the state government.

Hate to say it but even if Kamala wins any women or queer person in Texas who can leave, should.

It's all part of the extant stuff.

Stuff exists, the rest is sh!t we've made up.

Aren't you ignoring the article and engaging in an ad hominem attack on OP? Block them if it bothers you.

As a trans woman trapped in a red state, I would feel a lot safer if the dems would actually take a concrete position of whether I can continue existing. It might actually be important enough that I stay home in November, because so far Biden has done almost nothing (some easily undone executive actions and guidelines) and Kamala isn't talking about it at all (at least more than empty validation and hug boxing)

The dems are not just as bad as the right, but they're bad enough on some key issues (trans rights, the supreme court, and the US backed genocide of Palestine) blue no matter who is just ignorant and naive.

There are millions of blogs and news sources to browse off the beaten path. It really depends on how the site is built. A Wordpress enterprise solution has a default rss feed, but it can be turned off should the site choose. A medium or ghost based site has the same toggle. For a more bespoke solution it is extra dev time not all sites opt for anymore because so few people use rss these days.

Back in 2010 at the height of Google Reader's popularity rss only accounted for 10% of traffic and depending on how the feed was configured it might consume 30% of the non-money-making bandwidth. There was a push to try to monetize rss, but it kinda backfired and the technology faded into (relative) obscurity for the average person.

There are tens of thousands of absolutely amazing blogs and news sources online today with no support for rss.

How can vegans even justify having pets? It's not okay to milk a cow but it is to keep a cat? Indoor cats are deprived of basically all of their normal cat activities. They can't range or roam, they can't socialize with other cats, they are denied their natural predator instincts. As much as I love my kitties, like keeping a predator as a pet is basically kind of a dick move. I don't care how good you treat your slaves, they're still slaves.

If vegans can keep cats, they can eat cheese if the cow is well cared for or eggs if the farmer isn't a dick to the chickens.

I always thought of prophets as particularly charismatic mentally ill people. Jesus may not have set out to start a cult, but like, delusions of grandeur and distorted self-image in someone charismatic and intelligent usually ends in a cult. In his lifetime they were basically anarchist hippies (at least as recorded by the bible), but like all cults, today the center has rotted and it's just toxic brainwashing.

The problem is so much bigger than who said what at what convention. The Democratic party needs to actually do something other than pay lip service to the trans population. Unfortunately trans people are less than 1% of voters. Even if all of their friends and family were allies, that's still not enough votes to matter.

The average cis democrat would be perfectly happy with Not-Trump. No one wants trans people to die (at least hopefully), but if it was supporting trans rights or beating Trump? His evangelical base is getting tired of his shit. But if the scary brown lady started talking about transgenders that might be enough to bring them back into the fold.

Meanwhile in most red states the trans population will be ground into a fine paste regardless of who lives in the white house. Unless dems and pull a hat trick and take the presidency, house, and senate (next to impossible this year) that won't change.

It kills me to write, but not talking about trans rights makes sense. That is not a problem within the power of POTUS to solve. A federal law or constitutional amendment is going to be the only way to protect trans rights, abortion access, and gay or interracial marriage. Plus, more cynically, she's got the trans vote regardless, so best case she just says some words. Worst case she loses the paper thin margin because the jesus freaks who were going to stay home have a reason to vote.
