I go by the same username on world and frozeninferno.

Politically non-binary.

Fake news. Nobody actually uses light mode.

The main issue is that they assumed the rate limit was going to be the dumbest thing Elon was going to do, and they released Threads long before it was actually ready.

Did they win, though? Everybody who actually cared left. It was clear in June that they were going to do whatever the hell they wanted to regardless of what anyone did or said.

When you're a billionaire, you can do whatever the hell you want in Murica.

Can't say I'm surprised. Spez just wants to spin a narrative.

I really can't take any of his complaints seriously now that they sunsetted one of the few things people were actually willing to pay them for.

ETA: I know he's always been a liar, but the fact that he took the awards away just removed any shred of credibility he may have had left.

A ton of people flocked there because they think the Fediverse is too confusing, so now they're going to Discuit.

I have accounts on both out of curiosity, but I had a feeling something weird was going to go down on Squabblr. I just got a weird vibe from that place at first. I am not sure about Discuit yet, but it's yet another centralized service people are using because the fediverse is "too confusing"...

It didn't help that almost every other general purpose instance blocked sign-ups in June and early July either, or required an essay on the application. Lemmy.world was the only one that was even trying at all, and I will commend them for that.

Hopefully things will get better by the next time spez screws up. Because there will be a next time.

I hear ya... The advantage that Lemmy and kbin have over Mastodon is that Redditors tend to be more technically inclined than Twitter users, so ditching Reddit for Lemmy was easy, while I only know a grand total of three people on Mastodon, and two of them are tech YouTubers.

That was the original purpose of the checkmark, but Elon took them away from everybody who didn't pay for Blue or corporate verification (and didn't have over a million followers at the time) and started giving them to everybody who paid for Blue and added a phone number.

So now the checkmark just means they are paying for "X." Of course, I'm sure some people are now ashamed that they're paying, so they have the option to hide it now.

You do know that lemmy.world is a non-profit volunteer project, right?

I've been warning about this for a long time, and people were like nah, it's open source... I saw this coming miles away.

I will continue to use Firefox and Safari while I still can.

Except that they were very friendly to third-party app developers for 15 years and are now claiming they didn't know third-party apps existed.

Gotta love when the picture itself is mildly infuriating too, I guess

Fuck tankies, and fuck Hexbear and Exploding-Heads.

Survivorship bias. I've only been active in posts about leaving Reddit or pushing for change on Reddit lately. Everybody else who cares either left or is doing the same as me.

No kidding. I'm in my late 30s and regularly have to help 18-24 year old coworkers with connecting their phones to the bluetooth speakers or help with stuff on the computer. I never thought that would happen when I was growing up. I always thought they'd be much better than me!

It blows my mind that people are actually defending Reddit on this.

I don't know. I picked some hashtags to follow, and now my feed is full of cats.

Don't worry! He is listed as an official reason.

I got a System76 laptop in 2018, and it was a huge disappointment. Had to return it after a couple days because it stopped working, and they wanted my credit card info again before they'd ship me a replacement. The screen is awful and has a purple tint to it, and not all the features worked on Linux for the first year I had it.

If I wanted that level of frustration, a Windows laptop with similar specs would have been half the price.

Sure, but to be fair, there weren't really many general-purpose instances that were accepting sign-ups from anybody when the Reddit bullshit went down in June. That's part of why lemmy.world got as big as it did.

Most people who ended up on Squabblr and Discuit instead went there because they didn't have to write an essay to join or try to find a server that was accepting sign-ups and wasn't down a lot.

You're not kidding...

Because it IS broken. This is how he fixes it. People still associate Twitter with the censoring platform it was under Jack Dorsey. He needs to get new subscribers and promote it as a freer platform than it was before. This makes sense.

How the hell is it a "freer platform" if you will need to pay up to send DMs to your friends, and even paid users are limited in how many tweets and comments they can view? I am convinced Elon and Spez are actively trying to kill their platforms at this point, and the bootlickers are just delusional.

Bullshit. I know everybody loves a good "lazy employees" story, but American machines are designed to break down constantly so Taylor gets repair revenue from McDonald's franchise owners.

I used to work at McDonald's and got tired of the constant accusations from customers. Johnny Harris made an excellent video on this topic.

I know a good number of McDonald's employees are lazy, but that damn machine was the bane of my existence when I was a manager. It would just randomly decide not to work for the day and we had to call Taylor.

He needs to fucking go.

5 or 6 years ago, everybody worshiped the guy for saving the world with Tesla and SpaceX.

They did a lot of good for the FOSS community for many years. Unfortunately, those days are long gone.

Not the person you're replying to, but Linux has long had a policy of "F backwards compatibility" in the userspace. Try running a 10 year old binary on the current version of a distro. Try a 5 year old binary. Chances are, it's not going to work, or you're going to go through dependency hell trying to get the correct library versions for that old binary.

But notice how Windows 11 can run a Windows XP app.

That's the problem. Most users aren't going to want to compile from source, assuming the software they're trying to use is even open source. Hell, nvidia users constantly have driver issues because the binary blobs must be updated to continue working after kernel updates. And that's not to mention all the competing package managers and distro quirks with library versions and naming.

Hexbear, Exploding Heads, and Lemmygrad are cesspools.

People still use Reddit?

I've mentioned this elsewhere on Lemmy, but I follow a ton of artists on the former birdsite, and almost all of them ended up flocking to Threads and Bluesky. I created a Threads account to see what all the hype was about, and it is a very half-baked experience. Ignoring all the privacy concerns, the whole thing is very unfinished. Like you said, the feed is full of people I don't even know or follow and I have to chase down my friends to see their posts. The lack of hashtags is a problem too, and since it's not available in the EU, that rules out one of my best friends as well as many of her other friends.

I don't know if it will recover or not, but there's the old saying, "You only get one chance to make a first impression."

Forget the privacy concerns. The issue with Threads is that it's very unfinished. They assumed the rate limiting was going to be the dumbest thing Elon was going to do, and they rushed it out the door long before it was ready.

It might still succeed, but you only get one chance at a first impression.

I'm American, and I believe both sides raise valid points and both sides have problems. The polarization on both sides and refusal to listen to the other side is what is destroying this country politically.

The last presidential race, we got an egotistical maniac and a guy who is too senile to know where he is or how to form a sentence. This is the best we can do?

I am NOT saying both sides are the same.

I used to love Opera back in the day, but now there just doesn't seem like much of a point when Opera and Vivaldi are just Chromium forks.

(Vivaldi is the successor to the old Opera.)

It's telling that they got angry about the recording being released more than anything.

Before this went down, Christian and other app developers had nothing but great things to say about Reddit, especially regarding their communication regarding upcoming changes that could break their third-party apps, so I'm not buying the "We didn't know they were using the API to download all of Reddit!" argument at all. There are a few YouTubers making that argument as well, that Reddit didn't know app developers were making third party apps and the API wasn't intended for it.

I'm waiting for .7z because it doesn't nag me to register it.

No, I've replaced Reddit with Lemmy.

I found it very cheesy, tbh. Nacho average distro.

If I was behind you, I would have enjoyed the show!

It honestly just sounds like another case of "Not Invented Here" syndrome. Considering that Linux Deepin is developed in Wuhan, China, I don't see this really taking off like Flatpak did.
