You would think nearly half the voting population would agree and not support those that do. But here we are. Boggles the mind.

I'm no facebook fanboy by any measure. I miss Forums, but everyone moved to FB groups. (at least 90% of the people/content). I am on FB, I manage my FB feed. I unfollow/unfriend "crackheads" as someone else called them. I only follow people that mainly post their own content, not forward shit, or post news etc.

I was mainly there to share public "stuff" with my remote family (both parents were 300-600 miles from us) and we had a young child (both parents first grandchild).

I now mainly use FB for groups of my interest, because that's where the people are. I also sell stuff on FB market place, because craigslist is a ghost town.

Between managing my feed/friends, using 'social fixer' browser extension and Pihole I rarely see ads on there. Certainly not on my PC. The the App can sneak in some, but I hide/report any ad I see.

It works for me. I don't live on there by any means but go there for interest groups.

Ya, a PR nightmare for the next 15 minutes until the next unbelievable thing comes along and the ADD nature of people forgets windows is watching everything they do.

It has seemed to work on less and less sites for me recently, to the point that I do not visited it as often as I used to.

But that tweet does sound like pretty bad news...

But a "kill switch" doesn't address the issue. I mean while it's "killed" it does but whenever it's not, the data privacy concerns are in full swing.

It 100% brought me here. Didn't know what Lemmy was until the chaos over there. ultimately deleted my account never looked back. And that was a lot of eyeball time they lost from me.

We're missing the overall mass of people that both generate new, and answer questions on the content that was there, but I'm OK with that and I actually get better engagement here with those missing mass of people. I'm sure there's a point of more is not better when it comes to users.

What I hear is 61% of Americans should be voting for politicians that want to support and bolster social security.

It's almost like essential services are just entirely too expensive. You know the simple things like housing, food, and health care.

On the bright side... Um, well... I'll have to get back to you on that one.

If only there was some way to completely prevent this from happening...

Slightly less gouging

Hello fellow Hoosier, I emailed our school superintendent last year when the stupid book banning bill thing was proposed, and then passed. I wanted to know if there would be a way to tell if people requested books to be banned, so I could go out and buy them for my kid to read. (because obviously they must be read worthy)

I followed up with him recently since the bill had passed. He did, at least, inform me that no ban requests have been made. So at least in our school there wasn't some crazy people waiting to start complaining and getting books removed. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to search for banned books though which I would like to see as an option.

Sooo...

I get the crazy trumper hate and stupidity 100% I wish everyone could see him for what he is and stop following blindly thinking he cares about anyone but himself.

But an 80yo shouldn't have to work or have had to work for the last 8 years. He should be collecting SS, and should not have to live in absolute squalor. But we (as a whole in America) don't care about mental health or old people, it's not profitable.

The loving trump stuff can be tied to him not being mentally sound but it shouldn't have anything to do with an 80yo getting money he likely paid into SS back out in retirement.

I listen to a podcast that is generally quite opposite of my political alignment, but I usually find it entertaining. One thing these guys believe or at least discuss quite often is that Biden is being given drugs at certain times to "kick start" him for things like the SOTU. So, I don't believe this is anything new.

Judges shouldn't be aligned to a political party (duh), but here we are...

Wish they would just apply the law with motivation like they're supposed to.

From all the reports I've seen so far, they are in fact not attacking humans, just the boats. Unless this has changed.

Its crazy how much further ahead Europe is in Privacy Protection.

All these companies need to be held responsible for what they do with our data, and what it costs them when they lose control of it. Either figure out how to safe guard it or suffer painful consequences. Or perhaps only store what's necessary for us to interact.

Ya, I get it... But now they're actively participating in making the students education worse.

No doubt, it's a lose/lose situation. But I find it quite sad for the innocent kids getting caught up in stupid adult stuff. And believe me... I use "adult" strictly to define age/authority position, not mental or maturity level.

Latest thing I noticed is at least with the home devices you can no longer get who/what band is playing.

It only tells you the song name. The band/artist is the primary reason I ask, not the song title.

And as long as people keep subscribing to them, they'll March right along collecting that sweet money.

I can tell you why I do. I watch more YT than anything else (on my TV), and don't want to watch ads, or play cat and mouse games trying to prevent them. I also listen to a lot of music, and use YT Music. I pay for the family plan, since we all listen to music, and my son and I watch a lot of YT (very different videos on YT however :) )

I get, there's a growing group of people that think everything should be free, but I'm OK paying for something I use a lot, to remove ads. There should, however be more controls for paid users, like controlling whether or not you see creator ads, shorts, etc...

That's a lot of "ifs"

Welcome to the club, I was on the $14.99 Family Premium from YT Red/GPM. I left in a fit to Spotify, but crawled back since I just do not get along with Spotify. It was quite an increase to $22.99, but I literally watch YT as my main source of entertainment, and listen to YT music via Android Auto in my car, as well as through the house all the time. So I am getting a lot of use out of it. but I am not sure I could stomach another increase anytime soon.

Just FYI, it was wallet originally, moved to "pay" then both existed for way too long with not really knowing which did what

Now we're back to wallet.

🤦‍♂️

I didn't hit Reddit until Digg's problems started up, but those, like these now here, where the good 'ol days :)

I did this early on after realizing my mistake, promptly moved to vlemmy.net which after a couple weeks went totally mia.

Moved again... It's a toss-up though. I want an instance big enough to stay updated, and have an active community, but not turn into .world or vlemmy.

Ya, so... They didn't GIVE me the Google TV device, I had to buy it. Therefore they got their money from me for that hardware. I'm not using other 'free' google products that cost them money on that device so why would they be showing ads? What cost are the recouping?

For the record, I have not seen this and we do have a number of google TV's in our house. However our primary TV uses an Nvidia Shield.

A little more technical, I don't think your average starting battery is 100ah capacity, and most don't rate themselves in amp hours either.

I bought a deep cycle for my little sailboat at the local auto store and it's around 70-80ah

You would need an inverter to convert the batteries DC (direct current) into AC (alternating current). This will "cost" some power (watts) to convert that voltage. Your refrigerator runs on AC battery outputs DC.

That said, it is quite common to run refrigerators on larger boats and RVs off batteries and it would certainly be possible to run your house fridge off a single car battery for a short while if you've got an inverter large enough to run it.

What your not gonna do is just run out to the car, grab your battery and hook it directly to your fridge.

Our fridge uses between 130-180 watts when running and about 2.9Kw or 2900 watts in 24 hours. Your battery most likely has under 1000 total watt hours til empty, and car batteries are generally not used past 50% capacity (lead acid starting battery). So figure 500 watt hours max (for easy math). So... 4h run time maybe.

Ya, a self fixing problem in the end. The only crappy part is they'll take down immune compromised people that need others to be functioning parts of society.

Build quality vs. The aluminum build materials are not equivalent comparison

I'm a PC person, I do NOT like apple, however about 7 years ago I started traveling for work more and had the option to get a MacBook (at the time way way better battery, screen) than our windows laptops. I was just carrying a thin closed laptop with me around, and others had their laptop, a charge cable, and a mouse to achieve the same level of use.

I fell in love with the thing as a whole. Could go 8h on battery, didn't need a mouse, didn't use a mouse or external monitors like I did when "home" with my windows laptop.

I still do not like apple, own/owned many generations of Pixel phones, I build my own windows PCs (last winter the most recent)

But we replaced our old HP 360 which was also aluminum, flip/touch screen (still a nice laptop) with a MacBook Air M1 when they came out because of my experience in both longevity, quality, ease of mobility use (the touchpad).

Still a PC guy but the three (2 from work) MacBooks I've had have been pretty amazing.

I don't use either service very often, but the last time I tried, I ended up taking a taxi as it was cheaper. This was at the airport.

Again, rarely use these types of services period. But I've also never had a taxi not show up and almost make me miss my flight. Happened to me with Uber.

Terrible :(

Only used phone I ever bought was for my son, via Swappa and the transaction went smooth. No issues. (Pixel 4a)

I wear a Garmin Fenix 6X Pro Solar, which is a large watch with pretty incredible battery life. I can run outside (aka GPS) 5x a week and it still lasts 10 days between charges.

I got the Pixel watch 2 as part of the Pixel 8 pro deal, tried selling it unopened for a while but after Christmas I opened it to try it out. I really loved all the smart features above and beyond my Garmin. My Fenix gets notifications and can do simple (preconfigured) replies to msgs, but that's it. So the Pixel watch's "smarts" were cool. but the rest is bleh...

Good:

  • Display color/brightness

  • Smarts, integration with Pixel

  • taking calls (part of above I guess)

Bad:

  • Size. It's way way too small for me

  • Battery (see above)

  • Having to have two apps (Pixel Watch and Fitbit aps is just stupid)

  • Weirdness with controlling phone notification sounds when the watch is being worn

  • No easy way to sync steps tracking to Garmin, so basically while I tested this I wore two watches, since I wanted to keep my data going to Garmin

I was sitting on a picnic table at my kids soccer fields and a little jumping spider was crawling around on the table. It actually came over to me so I put my finger out and it didn't shy away but like touched me and then just hung out around.

I actually wanted to take it home.

And ya I'm over 50yo haha, so I left it alone as the adult thing to do.
