this is pretty disgusting even for Facebook

Its literally a public network where people chose to post things publicly for anyone to see and consume, I don't understand what degree of privacy people are expecting? If you have some insight into this or your own privacy concerns I'm super interested cuz its left me baffled.

I wouldn't stand out in a public city centre and expect privacy. However with the fediverse at least I choose which city centre I'm standing in and if I still don't like it, I can stand in my own and block anyone else to access it (yay privacy :D).

Also reddit served 'targeted' ads, which were admittedly pretty pants, so they had some degree of selling access to your data to third parties, which the fediverse doesn't have.

reddit also had that a bunch of places, for example /r/gaming /r/games /r/truegaming etc. etc.

I feel as others had suggested that client side multireddits communities would be ideal so you could set up what groups you like to peruse yourself.

wicked list thanks

I get what you're saying but if the whole population of where ever you are does the same, then the water usage would be huge. and not sure if you were joking but if not, what do you do the whole time in hour long showers, jesus ! haha

I've not tested it so I didn't enable it for android but I don't see why it wouldn't to be honest. It's getting late here now so I'll have a play tomorrow :)

pretty different things and also IBM owns Red Hat

I like the hackernews approach where downvotes on comments aren't seen, the comments are just faded out. The more downvotes = the more invisible it is.

Also thought this could be a cool approach with nice side effects - https://www.ucl.ac.uk/news/2023/jun/social-media-trustdistrust-buttons-could-reduce-spread-misinformation

Thanks for the link!

just to add that i have read that your comments won't be deleted/edited from blacked out subreddits, so maybe worthwhile to wait until the subreddits are back up (if they do come back!)

I found this out after I deleted my account which is a little whoops as I can't now log back in and finish the job haha.

dude lets work together a build something cool! I'm happy to set up a separate repo etc :D

interesting! Where abouts in the uk are you from? i’ve never heard of footballers hankerchief and def heard of snot rocket

I do see what you're saying but if you were concerned about privacy would you be that open? And reddit is scraped and archived loads so the same is still true there also https://www.unddit.com/ https://www.reveddit.com for example

I was on kbin for an afternoon and got downvote brigaded for calling out a highly updated post for spreading false info. I probably I could've worded my comment all fluffy and nice, but I was frustrated at the op for making things further confusing for everyone and the tone of my comment reflected that. I since deleted my kbin account and hoping that downvote brigade trend and hivemind stays on kbin.

reddit also had that a bunch of places, for example /r/gaming /r/games /r/truegaming.

while you're correct based on instagram's numbers, the other commenter would be correct if it was a British billion which is a million millions. just a fun fact 🦄

Not sure what you mean by ethical superiority? There's some pretty horrible and unethical instances on the fediverse... And I disagree with you that mass numbers of people means success

can dig through this see if you fancy anything https://www.papercutzinelibrary.com/virtual-library

There was one for hacking/security zines also that I've stumbled across before, can't remember the name of it now though unfortunately

op did mention they tired of xfce

live image is a great shout. you could ventoy to boot into the different images as quick as possible

Dude I'm so down for this too, I tweaked the kbin-link to work for lemmy, we should message the person see if he's interested in joining up efforts - even if they are not I certainly am!

https://addons.mozilla.org/en/firefox/addon/lemmy-link https://lemmy.world/post/141225

What's the best way to message you also? Let's get some dialog going and see if we can suss some cool stuff out

audiobookbay

fairs man, you convinced me!

In my navigation of the fediverse the last few days I've noticed a few people running instances of mastodon and lemmy with just themselves or 1 or 2 other people etc.

If you into tinkering and selfhosting, why not :D Means you're in full control of what other instances you federate with/can see etc.

If you are after larger numbers of people, why are you here and not on legacy social media where the numbers mean those platforms are better in your opinion?

Was your project folder synced via nextcloud?? I had a similar issue arise with my projects folder being deleted and not in the trash bin etc, can only think nextcloud was the culprit as I had removed the folder from my server and default behaviour must be to replicate that removal locally.

i use boox and syncthing so all books, audiobooks, files, notes etc are across all my devices automatically :)

i got an iphone in november to try it out and play with lidar etc. I had buyers remorse pretty quickly and now months later have had enough of the rigidity and am returning it for an android phone. I don’t understand the hype to be honest

I read this the other day and thought it could be a cool idea: https://phys.org/news/2023-06-social-media-distrust-buttons-misinformation.html

Are they losing enough to have an impact to their ad traffic however? Something reddit definitely have lost is the monopoly on online communities, now there's a bunch of alternatives that people use which has definitely reduced the value of reddit.

I just saw this, highlighting my own

"In an internal memo sent Monday afternoon to Reddit staff, CEO Steve Huffman addressed the recent blowback directed at the company, telling employees to block out the “noise” and that the ongoing blackout of thousands of subreddits will eventually pass."

https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/13/23759559/reddit-internal-memo-api-pricing-changes-steve-huffman

haha not that you should care, but guess you can be downvoted via other instances.

I love the swipey gesture workflow on gnome on the laptop

omnivore.app is wicked

2 second google for some numbers: “In 2022, global internet advertising revenue stood at 484 billion U.S. dollars”

One of the metrics you measure when running ads is return on investment, and companies will soon go bust if you aren’t making money on your ad spend.

wouldn’t it be 3fa with biometrics also ? Thanks for your explanation btw
