"Have these gentlemen ever seen a revolution? A revolution is certainly the most authoritarian thing there is; it is the act whereby one part of the population imposes its will upon the other part by means of rifles, bayonets and cannon"

Jellyfin, it's pretty simple and if you have a spare computer, a decent connection (and by decent I don't mean even a decent one by 21th century standards, I still have a 100/10mbps ADSL) and a 2/4tb Hdd, you can host your own FOSS Netflix/Hulu with all the shows you want, if you're in a county where "sailing the seven seas" is a huge deal, the only subscription would be a cheap VPN or even better something like real debrid.

Jellyfin, it's literally free Netflix if you own even just an old computer and some storage. Also open source that is another huge plus

Let's just hope tech workers will be smart enough to unionize and organize like the UPS Chads did.

If anybody is interested: an old workstation/server costs about 100€, a 2TB external Hdd 50€, that's about all you need to self-host your Netflix.

to proceed flash a Linux distro of your choice (I recommend Debian 12 stable) follow a tutorial on YT on how to install it, it's very simple.

Download and configure jellyfin. Open the 8096/8099 port on your router.

If you live in a country where downloading "Linux ISOs" is frowned upon, be sure to use a VPN while downloading the latest Linux Mint release for your jellyfin server.

Load those fancy new kali Linux live CDs on your jellyfin servers, download clients for all your devices and enjoy!

Guides for everything I said can be found online, expecially on YouTube.

Just to add: jellyfin is free and open source: you know it does not spy on you and it does not build a profile on you to then sell your data to ad companies, a huge plus if you ask me.

Antisemitism ≠ antizionism, lemmy.ml (speaking from experience) has waaaaay harsher and stricter moderation that something like ee or world, they straight up hard-remove words from comments, an antisemite would be banned on sight.

Rome, Italy. rent for a small store is 800/mo where this store is, and an average salary is about 1200/mo. This antique/junk store sells like 2 things a day(with average price being 5€) always takes unfavorable exchanges and generally isn't great business-wise, yet it's been here for 15 years, in a district where most - more reasonable - businesses fail within 2 years.

It doesn't take credits cards, only cash. There's a flight simulator controller from the 80s that didn't sell for a decade.

Maybe I'm just paranoid.

Edit: i still love that store, I'm addicted to collecting old junk (self promotion time: I founded a coin collecting community over at lemmy.ml,its called numismatics) and I go to that store every month or so, it helped me to get rid of some old vynil records from my grandfather in exchange for some cash (obv without receipt) but still, I think it either evades taxes (taking that from granted) or it's something bigger, like a front for a mafia or something else.

Why is lemmy licensed under the AGPL3? What prompted you to take that decision?

Status symbol VS smartphone, a phone isn't smart if you can't sideload apps or flash a custom rom.

Aside cop cars (and we have like 4 different departments of cops, one worse than the other) the worse of all are cars/motorcycles that produce satanic 100+decibel sounds, literally they should be illegal.

The package manag- oh it's windows right

If we are in a simulation it means God is the ascended version of a gigantic Linux server

This would be true if we lived in a world where salary increases matched inflation. I make ~5% more on paper than I made a couple years ago, yet we had terrible inflation in the eurozone, my salary was effectively cut.

The only instances that are blocked are porn ones, that's a thing I don't miss from reddit tbh, but the swear filter is really dumb. And doesn't really fucking filters swears, but it's really dumb regardless, since it's neither opt-in nor opt-out, it's just there.

Around 2.000 no kidding

sharing a house with other people in an individualist society that until not too long ago, when it was still economically feasible, pushed everybody to get their own house as soon as they can is abject poverty

Some kind of marketplace like eBay.

Having bought and sold there the rules are quite arbitrary, and their cryptic algorhitm is a nuisance to buyers (you clicked by accident on a stove? You're gonna see a ton of stoves in the recommended for a while!) and periodically harms sellers (if you don't post daily and basically make it your day job, good luck making money!)

a federated alternative, with different instances for various interests and categories, meta-categories even and so on. Maybe regional instances like we have on here, one for the EU (quite convenient to ship and receive packages from inside of it, no customs wasting time and money) one for North America, one for East Asia, etc. With one being able to purchase from all of them.

Federation would also ensure that rules are properly enforced without abuses or other malpractices like eBay does (did you know eBay shipped a pig head to somebody who publicly criticized them?) since those instances would naturally be avoided and new ones would be made. It would also prevent excessive fees, as the fediverse is generally not a for-profit endeavor, and still, there will always be the option to shop around from other instances.

my concern is that some of the more commonly used video types might have trouble on Linux, or that some of the word document templates I use in Windows might have compatibility issues.

As for the first point, never had issues with video reproduction on Linux myself.

As for the second: a year or so ago MS released it's office suite on the web, so if libreoffice (free and open source office suite pre-installed in many Linux distros) has trouble reading your documents (proprietary formats like .docx that not always work on libreoffice) there's always the web version of MS office.

It's possible, there are 2 possibilities.

Either he only operates the store for fun, and barely breaks even. (and may be possible, he seems really interested in what he does)

But even then, he may operate the store for fun and launder money for some mafia

Or it's shady stuff period.

In the end, innocent until guilty.

Edit2: and maybe he's just rich from his family and just does what he likes.

Cool. They gave speed to mice

Just watching all these new subscription services for everything gave me the fatigue and started my self-hosting and actually-owning-things journey, even just paying for Netflix (when I still did) was too much for me, it didn't have everything I wanted, if it did it would remove it after a year or so, and every couple years the price would hike.

The balls of naming a community "news" and removing stuff that isn't of interest to a small fraction of the world population on an instance that should represent the whole world.

The fact is that the store owner is a massive boomer, I need to write him via sms because he doesn't have WhatsApp (ubiquitous in Italy and all of Europe) and only owns a dumb phone, as an online seller myself, I think a smartphone is a must these days. He doesn't have a site, he thinks eBay is the devil (and as an ebay seller, that's true, but for other reasons) so I don't think he's an online seller, he's just not the type

If you really wanna support them give them a dollar on PayPal, to a creator 1000 views are worth 1/2dollars, ergo it's pretty hard for them to make even just a mere dollar off of you through ads, I block all ads and donate when their content is useful/entertaining
