I worked one summer at the same factory as my dad. One day I was operating a cutting machine and my dad came by because I wasn't wearing any safety equipment. He suggested (not told) to wear the gear but I refused because no one else uses it. He said thats fine, it's my choice but he suggested I walk around the factory floor and count how many workers had all their fingers. I put on the safety equipment. Later on while having lunch with the two other guys in our area I noticed both were missing fingers.

My friend and I had finished a long day at university and we were slowly walking towards the bus stop. We saw our bus but neither of us were willing to run so it left without us. We waited in line behind a dozen other students because this bus stop services 3 bus routes, the other two would take longer for us to get home so we never use them. We chatted and after a few minutes waiting I turn around and see the line behind us was over 30 people. A few minutes later our bus came and we patiently waited for the passengers to get off, we chatted some more. A couple minutes pass and the bus is empty but the line wasn't moving. Then we stood there as the bus with the front door open slowly drove pass with a confused driver staring out at a line of 50+ people waiting in the cold. I than realised we were the first in line for that bus and everyone was waiting for us. I whispered to my friend that I didn't care how long it would take but we are going to take the other bus home today.

Thanks for the clarification. So it needs to be a neighbouring country which refuses entry. I wasn't able to find any evidence of neighbours of Nazi Germany preventing entry to Jewish refugees but it seems odd all these desperate Jews would travel across the Atlantic to Cuba in the hopes of getting into USA. Couldn't they go to Western Europe, be safe then continue to USA? Unless they were officially/unofficially not welcomed. All in my head and the Holocaust didn't happen in 1939 so nothing to worry about.
