Because of the unfortunate centralisation that's happened, with so many people being directed to lemmy.world or choosing to go there, a big DDoS attack on world would disrupt a lot of communities that people on other instances use. It's in everyone's interests to spread the load more, which is why I find it sad when some communities migrate to world. UnixPorn was one, although it was already on lemmy.ml which is a larger instance too

I wouldn't say this is world news. It's barely even US national news tbh. It would be very appropriate in the midwest.social instance though if you haven't put it there.

Hmm that's not promising news for me. I've found Futurama works best when it's handling things not directly related to current events. I've been concerned about this season in general since I heard about it, more so after seeing the trailer, and even more so now.

Considering this user made an account on lemmy.ml to post this, and the community in world was made by the same user with a world account, maybe they don't understand the federation aspect correctly. It seems to happen a lot, and it's frustrating because it leads to one huge instance in lemmy.world.

Shooting out of a cannon with the wings hat and flying around in Mario 64 was such a pure fun experience for my kid brain. The switch in music and just soaring around a 3d level was really something special at the time.

I hope to see less song lyric comment chains on completely unrelated posts. Also I don't know why, but I always hated the whole, 'my partner, let's call them blank (not real name)' thing.

It had some pretty funny moments, and the universe being trapped in an ever expanding warehouse is pretty Futurama, but I was pretty disheartened when I saw the name of the episode and when I saw it was just about Amazon. I hope not all of them are current event things.

I liked this one. Zapp always gives me a laugh. So far this and the Christmas ones have been my favourites, the rest being meh to ok.

But it wasn't so often the central theme of the episode. We've had 4 out of 5 stories based purely around current events.

I would rather it have ended on a high note as it did before the reboot if all the episodes are going to be kind of meh. New episodes for the sake of new episodes don't do it for me. I'm hoping it picks up though

A good documentary, on the USSR though not modern Russia, is The Human Face of Russia. You can find it on YouTube. It's Australian as well so it's interesting seeing a look into the Soviet Union from the point of view of a country that is aligned with the US but without so much Red Scare propaganda.

Hexbear was a fork of Lemmy made by former chapotraphouse users when they were booted off Reddit. They have recently worked to refederate with a select number of instances, with the potential of adding more in the future if it doesn't disrupt the community they've built. Luckily for me, SDF is in the whitelist, although I also have an account on Grad and TTRPG.

Lemmy.world preemptively defederated with them based on a pretty bad reading of a hexbear announcement on how to behave in other instances, despite world's reluctance on federating from exploding heads originally.

True you can, it's a very small issue. The problem is they were always at or near the top. One chain isn't that bad, but seeing it over and over again on interesting posts gets old fast.

I loaded up Pathfinder, got through the intro and got to the world map, thought, 'yep, I can see myself spending a lot of time on this game,' and haven't played it since lol. I really need to jump into it again.

Owlcat are also doing a Rogue Trader crpg set in the Warhammer 40000 universe. I've tried to swear off GW for being evil but it looks really cool from what I've seen.

While this is shitty, I don't really care about Beyoncé and didn't subscribe to this community to see news about her. I hope it doesn't end up as a dunking on mainstream music community instead of a showcasing sweet alternative music community.

Cassette Beasts! Amazing monster trainer/Pokemon like with quality of life improvements everywhere, a crazy amount of "shinys" as each monster can spawn as any element, good story and tunes, and awesome art. Definitely worth picking up.

Also Eastward doesn't get enough love. Touching story, brilliant art and music, solid mechanics and a whole, deep turn based retro rpg within the game.

At least this take is honest about the disregard for human lives as long as it furthers the interests of the US.

The web browser works fine for me, and then I don't have a other app on my phone. I've tried a bunch of different apps, Jerboa, Liftoff, Wefwef/voyager, and connect, and I keep coming back to just viewing it in browser. Haven't tried Sync because the idea of wilfully putting ads into a thing that doesn't have them is disgusting to me.

Yeah that one is fairly active. The issue with browsing all is the amount of posts that come out of lemmyshitposting and memes that flood the feed.

I can't recommend lemmyverse.net enough to find cool instances and communities. Once you find a community you like on it just copy the URL and paste it into a search from your instance.

Definitely, all of them good in their own right, but Exodus so good and expansive that the other two combined feel like an awesome prologue

I prefer a lower rate of posts, it allows subscriptions to more niche communities. One of the worst things about Reddit was if you subscribed to any sub with more than 100000 members it would flood out any smaller subs, which were normally much better content wise.

Plus with a lower rate of posts, each one can receive more attention for the community. Comments can, and have, run for days on Lemmy, something that generally only happened in mega threads on Reddit.

We don't need growth for growths sake. It is part of the reason I find the arguments for federating with Threads so weak.

This reads to me more like the Polish PM is trying to get ahead of announcing they will not take in any more refugees.

I wouldn't say 'often' implies >50%, to imply that I would use something like 'mostly' or 'generally'. I think if you think about a 15% failure rate in something else, for example starting a car, saying it often fails would be pretty apt.

Hmm I had the opposite feeling about Red Dead Redemption 2. I felt the slower pace was nice, and respected the player by not having a false urgency for most of it like so many other games do. I really enjoy slow burn movies and novels though, and I can understand they aren't for everyone.

Love the Uncharted series. Naughty Dog makes some good shit. I also loved both Last of Us games, but they might be more on the slow side again.

For me, I would want to to federate and not be defederated by with Lemmygrad and Hexbear, while also having the same for things like aussie.zone, pathfinder.social, slrpnk.net, and the larger instances so I can pick out good communities from them. Stability matters more than size for me, I have no issues with the all feed and actually have had to block some communities due to spam or lack of interest as it is.

Also, is it the case that it only shows communities someone is subscribed to in all, or is it discovered communities?

If you want somewhere that definitely isn't a liberal echo chamber there is always Lemmygrad. It's so much not a liberal echo chamber that a lot of liberal instances have them blocked. It's also awesome.

I think you don't understand the term liberal properly though.

Workers and Resources is a great city builder/industry builder with a different focus to most. You're in charge of a socialist republic in the eastern bloc. The economy works differently and there is a lot more focus on... workers... and resources. There are also wildly varying difficulty levels so it can be as simple or complex as you want it to be.

I like the sound of that, is hexbear federated with your instance yet?

How is Tunic? It looks great but there are always other games I want when I'm buying things

Hell yeah Morrowind! I like Skyrim ok but it feels bland somehow next to the weird setting and deeper mechanics in Morrowind

Best instance, I hope they make a firefish one.

Hearts of Stone was so good. I think the story being more focused helped compared to Blood and Wine.

Love Hollow Knight! I know you said Metroidvanias aren't your thing, but if there are two that I would recommend it would be Hollow Knight and Environmental Station Alpha. ESA has graphics that not everyone will like, but you get used to them, and the gameplay is great. Well worth checking out if you want to see more of the Metroid inspiration coming through in the genre.

Yeah I've noticed that too with most retro gaming communities. I'd like a more PC focused one too

Haha yeah same here. I guess we sit back and hope someone else takes up the mantle.

As for names, I'm not sure. There's already some retro/vintage PC communities on SDF but they are more hardware focused. Old PC Games? Retro PC Games? The Beforetime? No idea.

Sorry I didn't mean that Uncharted has a false sense of urgency, those games are perfectly paced. I meant other open world games sometimes do. Oblivion and Skyrim are good examples, where the main quest seems to want you to rush through it since it sounds so urgent, but there is no need to.

Doom seems like a solid start, it was revolutionary. You could also push it to 1990. As for an end date I'd have to think about that. 2000 or 2003 gives a 10 year range with a lot of influential releases, but might be a bit limited. If you did 2013 that's a 20 year range, but it could also be a shifting time frame where it is for games of a certain age. If it was 10 years or older games then it would start with an end date of 2013 and the range would expand every year. The issue with that is it would lose focus on older games eventually.

Yeah good points on open ended timeframe and the 2013 end date. 2010 seems pretty good, the only odd one out for that list would be civ 5 because it's so widely played.

I'm in my 30s now so I have to remember that someone who was 5 in 2010 would be 18 now, and red dead redemption 1 would definitely be considered old. I think that's a solid timeframe, 1990 to 2010. If Lemmy ever gets big enough to warrant it there could eventually be games by decades communities as well.

The only issue I would have with a 93 start date is it excludes games like Dune, Wolfenstein 3D, and the original Civilisation, which were earlier in the 90s.

Having said that, every cut off point has its flaws, and a more focused range could lead to a more focused and spirited community. Very weird that COD:MW2 is 14 years old btw.

Hell yeah, I'm concerned that if SDF decides to block instance they will include Lemmygrad and Hexbear so I might make an account on yours. I assume you're defederated from stuff like exploding heads, rammy, and burggitt?

Actually just checked your list, perfect blocked instances list and absolutely sick instance theme. Love it. I'm in 😎
