Just an ordinary myopic internet enjoyer.

Can also be found at lemm.ee, lemmy.dbzer0, and Kbin.social.

And he deserves a long vacation after all the shit that has happened to him. I'd even understand if he'd go low profile from this point on.

The character assassination Steve Huffman unleashed on him would make a lesser man just want to disappear (online).

Granted, but your thoughts are transmitted to the person looking at you.

It's not just OPs strange and mysterious predicament that has made this thread epic, but also the genuine efforts of some of us to help OP in the midst of wild, off the wall, guessing.

And then there's the misplaced reply that ended up in the perfect place.

And I'm glad to have seen it first hand.

I'm a bit out of the loop here, what might have happened on June 18 that have precipitated this spike in new accounts?

On a possibly related note, over here in Lemmy.world, there's a post by the admins that have touched a little on automated account creation. I don't know if those two are connected though.

That's awful. I wonder if there's a way to automate deleting all of our posts and replies—and repeatedly run it on a schedule via a cron job or something, maybe once an hour or something. And let it run until their API becomes locked down.

Proper dental hygiene is something that one should make a habit from a young age. By the time one realizes its value, like I did, it might already be too late.

Ditto with sleep hygiene. Those two are habits that I think should be learned and reinforced from a young age.

Oh no, they did literal shit posting, didn't they?

EDIT: I had to go check it out (via Teddit). They're not posting literal shit, but it's funnier than I thought.

It is indeed goddammed hilarious. (Literal) shit gets old, but this is gold!

I am amazed at how much fuckery these motherfuckers have come up with to mess with‌ Reddit and I am loving it.

That's my Subscriptions feed, sorted by hot. This is the only post that's about that orangered site.

PS: Oh, if you're wondering, yeah, that's from Lemm.ee I am using my lemmy.world account right now to make this comment though.

Cool! Every time you manipulate gravity, your body loses mass in addition to and proportional to how much energy is needed to do the manipulation.

Which part of your body loses this (additional) mass is totally random. It could be your fat, it could be your brain tissue, it's all random. How the mass is lost depends on what is the most likely way it'd be dissipated.

Duolingo, the language learning app that profited so much from volunteer input, only to kick them out once they outlived their usefulness.

Reddit, the content aggregator whose lifeblood is user-generated content and whose distinctive feature is its army of volunteer moderators.

Do I hear an ironic echo here? Or is it just me?

Not just the architecture, but also the possible logistics of such an event. Who'd contact John Oliver's PR team, for example. What about the scheduling? Also, while I think people here are good-natured enough that it might not be necessary, who'd be making sure that the thread responses (the questions) don't violate any community and instance rules?

I may be overthinking it, but such a huge event would involve a lot of coordination from many different people.

I’m aware that Richard Stallman had some questionable or inadequate behaviours. I’m not defending those nor the man himself. I’m not defending blindly following that particular human (nor any particular human). I’m defending a philosophy, not the philosopher. I claim that his historical vision and his original ideas are still adequate today. Maybe more than ever.

This is really an important note. I've always maintained that while not every little one of Stallman's ideas are gold, his ideas on things he's got expertise on (especially open-source software) are pretty much on point—even if his ideas are a bit too idealistic and are seen as aspirational ideals rather than calls for action and the fact that a lot of them are painful for ordinary people to follow.

After Reddit's response to the blackout protests, what made those moderators think Reddit is going to act nice? The mask has already been dropped, Reddit, represented by Steve Huffman, has already shown their true colors. Anyone who'd willingly trust them after what they've done is just flat out asking for pain.

Having said that, maybe those mods are trying their best to keep whatever semblance of "the old status quo" that might still be left. I also am guessing there's some kind of a psychological trauma thing at play here with them choosing to stay with an entity that has shown its willingness to use and abuse them, even painting them as villains. Sure, it's not a simple thing to just leave--after all of the effort they've exerted taking care of their subreddits. But they've got to realize sometimes, the best move is to just leave, even at the cost of everything they've got left.

So, they made their seabed and now lie on it?

It's hard to find empathy for those guys.

My oldest account is at 9 years 10 months at the moment. Was a lurker for a time before that too. I haven't deleted my accounts out of concern of my comments reappearing, but I've kept any interaction with that site at a minimum.

Most of the time, I just check to see if any comments resurfaced, or if I've got a love letter from the admins. Neither has happened so far, but I'm not sure it won't happen. Until then, I will keep scrubbing my accounts.

I don't see myself returning there. I've lost any desire to do so, and my old, yet scrubbed accounts will serve as a reminder never to interact with that site ever again. Peek, if I must, but never interact.

There's also lemmynsfw for that kind of thing.

Well then, there's still no entry for John Oliver there.

Not sure whether or not it's a good thing.

From my own experience, the comments (and posts) that have resurfaced are from those subreddits that have stayed in blackout, but are open at the time I checked.

Thus, and though this is me talking in hindsight, I've made a (bash) script that would execute Shreddit three times a day (via cron). I eventually would resort to manual deletion after June 29, but until then, I can rest easy that whatever resurfaces would get shredded.

Just to be sure though, I open Reddit on an incognito window (or even a separate browser I never used Rəddit on) and check things myself, usually by opening my profile page(s) and seeing if there's still any comments/posts left.

Expected behavior from Steve Huffman's lackeys.

I’m glad I was forced to remove my Reddit crutch and dive in full force.

Pretty much the silver lining in all this. Best of luck to you and your adventures here in the Fediverse.

No.

Way too much trust has been lost for me to even consider going back to that place.

Even if they completely remove and ban Steve Huffman and his family, fiends or even acquaintances from any and all company and/or subcontracted positions, completely overhaul all their positions and replace them with trustworthy people (sucks to be them, but they know what they're getting into), add all the requested features overnight including and especially the accessibility features... I still won't consider going back to them.

They will need to exert a huge amount good faith effort over a span of a decade to earn back my trust, if they're at all capable of doing things in good faith.

The 2003 FMA anime was created back when the manga is still being published, and started to drift away from the manga such that at the anime's midway point, it's following a different storyline. Some plot points and characters are changed as the anime overtook the manga. Ultimately, it's a different story as opposed to the manga and Brotherhood.

However, I like how the pacing is a lot slower, allowing me to get more invested and interested into the characters. It's not as fast-paced as Brotherhood, and it's a lot darker. There's just something really somber about the entire thing that I can't put my finger on.

I watched it on cable TV back then, but I think there are some sites still carrying it if you know where to look.

As for One Piece, thanks for the advice! I'll go do just that once I have the time (to watch the first half--or I can just go full manga). I don't think you're proselytizing than you're just excited to talk about something you're really into, which is nice.

That's something that, depending on your POV‌ (sadistic DM or a player), might be either interesting, or really terrible.

But then again, it takes time (to know that you're fucked) so I guess it's just horrifying. You'd never know if you've fucked yourself up using the power.

I only wish I can actually go ahead and buy one; good pillows as well.

But then again, I'm just in a really shitty financial situation. Maybe when things turn around for me, I can invest on those.

I use adblock (uBlock origin) because the internet is nigh unusable otherwise. It's incredibly risky (even irresponsible) to not have adblock turned on given the danger of malware, or malware in the guise of advertisements. However, I'd whitelist sites that are decent about it--though in practice, I find it risky to temporarily disable my adblock just to test things, much less to whitelist them.

Most of all, there are other, better, ways to support content creators in the internet.

Yes! For example, his "no javascript please" stance, which is unfortunately nearly impossible to follow if you're to have any semblance of normalcy in browsing the internet, I take as an "ideal to aspire for". If anything, his warnings against Javascript reminds me to be ever mindful of the code I invite to run in my machine.

If you've got a way to access your user profile via a browser (mobile works too), you can see your saved posts there.

On any page, click/press the hamburger icon on the top-leftmost part of your screen. It'd open up a menu (or an area) where you can see your profile picture and username at the very bottom. There's a triangle next to your username, click/press that.

Another menu/area opens up that has options "Profile", "Settings", and "Logout". Click/press "Profile" to see your user profile.

You're then taken to a different page (which you can directly go to via https://your.lemmy.instance/u/your_username, for example:‌‌‌ https://lemmy.world/u/AllGoesUpMustGoDown). There, you can choose between "Overview", "Comments", "Posts" and "Saved." That last link (to your saved posts/comments) won't be visible to others (I tried).

PS: I tried looking for the same in wefwef, but I can't find it as well.

PPS: Weirdly enough, it might be faster to just go directly via the address bar of your (mobile) browser if you know what you're doing, lol!

Edit: Typos and shit. Added PPS part.

Wouldn't that end up as porn?

Sure, it's sad for the families, but I find that my empathy is better off being spent elsewhere.

Even if some employee got caught in this CEO's whims, that employee already sold his life away upon embarking on a sub made by a company whose head thinks "safety just is pure waste."

What's a waste is this CEO not surviving to regret his very words.

Mightily envious of you guys over there.

Lol!!

Meanwhile, I was thinking more along the lines of FMA's law of equivalent exchange, but since the way equivalent exchange is handled is kinda hand-wavy, I tried to find a way to make it more realistic, while trying to limit the power's OP potential (hence, the random body part stipulation as initially stated).

TBH, I don't watch One Piece, but had I done so, I would have given you a nod by saying you need to be concentrating to use the power (and would backfire by randomizing the target of the power if you lost concentration).

Thanks for the hard work and the speedy response.

Unfortunately, the frontpage isn't still showing any posts. I did a test from a chromium browser just now and it's working as expected. I don't have a vanilla Firefox to test things with, unfortunately, but at least I've managed to narrow it down to my browser breaking things.

Again, thanks, and if there's any more detail you might need, I'm more than happy to provide them.

Update. I asked a friend of mine to take a look at the Lemmy.world front page via his browser (vanilla Firefox) and it works as expected.

I also did an earlier test on a chromium browser and it also works as expected.

It might just be that my browser is breaking stuff, which I need to investigate deeper.

Another update.

I tried installing vanilla Firefox (alongside LibreWolf, which I didn't touch), and for some weird reason, the error magically disappeared.

I am guessing now that something in my old LibreWolf config, which got overwritten when I installed Firefox, was the one causing the problems.

This might be my final update regarding this since due to what I did, there might not be any more chance for digging in deeper.

Thanks! That seems very plausible.

In hindsight, I shouldn't have panicked and tried refreshing/clearing the cache first.

No, it doesn't go away. What I do instead is check my profile to see if my reply has been reflected on my comments list there. If it's reflected, I deem it safe to close the tab where I made the reply.

It's the bit about Hexbear switching over from a fork to mainstream Lemmy (sorry, but that's how I understood what you said) made things click for me.

I've always assumed that even if Hexbear were not federated, its users should have been counted as Lemmy users, but Hexbear using a fork, and thus, not being counted makes sense.

Thanks!

Probably, though from what I've seen in the linked thread, there's no such keywords present.

What I suspect is that Reddit admins saw a rise in deletions, and put two and two together and thought it's part of the protest. They're not wrong, but still a dick move.

Steve's huffing Huffman. Guy seems to be the kind of person who'd get high on his own farts.

Implying Steve Huffman isn't a psychopath. I hope I can be as charitable as you.
