I don't think it is dead, but the hype certainly seems to be over. It is important to realize that as long as the crypto value trend is strongly linked to value of other commodities, it is still being treated as an investment, rather than a currency. Increasing the places where crypto can be actually used to pay will allow for unlinking crypto from being an investment to a currency. I havent looked into these other formats because maildir works for me. I can saxe local backups, remoxe mail from the serveg, and even put it back later. All plain text.

Look into isync / mbsync in combination with maildir utils (mu/mu4e) or notmuch.

If you are comfortable with the command line, mbsync / isync allow you to save your mail offline with the ability to search and read it later on. You can use a cron job to fetch the email however often you want it.
