It's always a bit sad when something you love starts feeling more like "just" work.
Sounds like a good plan to chill a bit and rub shoulders with the mortals.
You guys are probably going to have to recruit more mods in the near future to avoid burnout if we keep growing like this.
Hang in there!
Yeah, this is basically their business model/modus operandi
I like the idea and to be honest it's probably better with registrations turned off so that all posts would only be from rss sources.
I'm definitely going to subscribe to a few of your communities!
Thanks for the update!
While exploring kbin I've been checking out lemmy world a bit and there's a surprising level of toxicity towards beehaw going on. From a vocal minority of course but some have seem to have taken the degeneration as personal slight and some are just aggressive towards beehaw on a general term.
A lot of people seem to understand the reasons and even if they don't agree with it they're at least understanding.
The toxic minority is hard to grasp though.
Then again, I suppose the ones that caused the issues in the first place are among that group.
That sounded scary at first!
You guys are doing great, all of you!
And yeah, that was a risky move, a good one in hindsight, but still has to be scary?
I'd rather not see Beehaw split from Lemmy but if you feel you have to then I for one wouldn't mind seeing it using a phpbb board.
Glory to the old forums! /old grumpy mode
I think this is it: https://labs.rs/en/invisible-infrastructures-mobile-permissions/
You guys rock!
Perfectly handled IMHO, very open and honest. Transparency is important!
I can definitely see how that could happen.
The biggest problem for me with the commercial social networks is the use of algorithms to try and spoon feed me with stuff.
I hate that. Let me follow people or stuff I like and then give me that in a chronological order, that's all I want. Stop injecting other stuff in my own curated feed, it really shouldn't be so hard..
I hear you!
There's a good exception to that rule though, the satanic temple (https://thesatanictemple.com/)! They're doing wonders using religion to push actual good values, they're mission is rather nice:
"The Mission Of The Satanic Temple Is To Encourage Benevolence And Empathy, Reject Tyrannical Authority, Advocate Practical Common Sense, Oppose Injustice, And Undertake Noble Pursuits."
Homosexuality isn't immoral there.. just conisder the huge banner right in the middle of their site. :)
They're a nice counter weight to the "regular" religions really.
Nice job and all.. but I really wish this wasn't a thing.
Karma is something that should stay behind at Reddit imho, it just fosters karma whoring instead of actually contributing to a discussion.
That's one of the things I liked best when I joined Lemmy, that there wasn't a visible karma counter on people's profiles.
Anyway.. rant mode off.
Still, neat job!
Stray!
And I did get it from the Steam sale.
It had been on my radar for quite some time. Partly because it's gotten such great review and partly because it's from Annapurna, they seem to release pretty sweet games.
And it's great! Highly recommended. :)
I've had this site given as reason a few times though I myself feel it's rather overblown and feels more like a personal vendetta for some reason:
For what it's worth I've used Manjaro myself and rather liked it. Never had a problem.
They can only see cached posts from before the defederation, and nothing new from us.
They can post in those threads though, but they're not talking to us in them even if it looks like it.
As always, thank you for your transparency! <3
Honest and open, sounds like a good guy. I can totally see such mistakes happen. He handled it perfectly.
Firefox on Linux here, nothing has changed on my side but it suddenly feels better for some reason. :)
Yeah, it really can't be that hard to show a saving indicator..
Sorry to hear that mate! That's one of the biggest reasons I've never wanted to move towards IT forensics even though I think I'd enjoy the actual work. But having to regularly sift through the absolute worst humanity has to offer sounds awful.
Hope the immediate pain of it settles as soon as possible!
This might not be what people want but since beehaw is going to leave Lemmy anyway, couldn't you just completely defederate and run as an isolated instance? Then you'd have control of what her life gets published without having to deal with federated nastiness?
Not bad!
The old one was good as well though :)
Why the fuck is humanity so completely deranged? :(
It Takes Two is a great co-op (no singleplayer) game where you play two parents who are going to a divorce when they are turned into two dolls and need to find their way to their daughter while getting across their yard and house.
It's really fun for couch co-op!
You ought to have a space community!
For instance:
https://www.planetary.org/rss/articles
And a bunch of nasa related ones:
Here's the whole bundle link: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/13831/Tomb_Raider_Collection/
Word of Warcraft - word feud with elves and orcs
Great job keeping the site safe guys!
Nice to see it back up again! It being offline was surprisingly palpable. Missed it!
I'm guessing it's probably not the last big thing that's going to hit Lemmy instances in the future, everything still being in early development and all. Only things we can do is keep an eye out, have vigilant admins and plenty of backups!
And patient users but we seem to have that. :)
I've had similar feelings towards Lemmy as a whole lately too. Maybe I need to play a bit with my sorting settings but it's starting to feel like the vast majority of posts on all my subscribed communities are linked posts without any extra info added.
Sure the titles themselves might be self explanatory but I'd expect the poster to actually also write something about the link they've posted. What did they think about it, what do they want to discuss about it.
Is just feels.. hollow? When you see link after link with not even an effort towards discussion from the poster.
It's starting to feel like I'm using an RSS reader.
Not sure what too do about it though. Require more text to be written for each link post? That might just end up with some copy pasting I suppose but it might be worth a shot?
Our society is edging closer and closer to that depicted in Neal Stephenson's Anathem..
More than twice that of OS X? Pretty impressive!
I wonder if we're actually getting worse or if it's just easier for the scum to coordinate and to some degree also be more visible due to the internet.
It is starting to feel like things used to be better, like we're spiraling out of control.
There were more and more mass shootings, the alt right/extremists are spreading like a wild fire all over the globe, shit like this keeps happening.
I mean what the fuck? Where are we heading? And why? :/
I really liked it. The action is better than the trilogy and the story is decent enough. Maybe not quite up to the trilogy but still good to me.
I use Jerboa on Android and even though it's in early development it's already very nice! Reminds me of boost for reddit.
I've heard of mlem(?) for ios but know nothing about it.
That's terrible! I hope he pulls through! :(
I've spent ages on phpBB and I do kind of miss out to be honest.
It might just be nostalgia talking though because I can't really say exactly what I'm missing about it.
Might just be the old communities that used it.
There's even a monospaced version of Comic Sans designed for coding and it's actually surprisingly pleasant to use!
Very nice! Love that our communities stand out more!
Brilliant marketing tbh, it'll get people taking about a lot.
I'll second Security Now!
Listened to it for years but kind of lost track when I stopped having to commute. Kind of miss it really but I don't find as much time for podcasts these days sadly.
Rather annoying too.. sometimes I miss games that didn't require you or some server to be online..
