You might want to X-post to c/relationshipadvice as well. That being said, the only one responsible for kidnapping anyone is the kidnappers. And no one should expect their friends or lover to kill their kidnappers. It would likely get you killed in the attempt. On top of this, these are all hypotheticals.

Someone who is using hypotheticals that they made up in their head against you is more worried about themselves than you.

It is not my place, but this person sounds like someone I wouldn’t even want to be friends with, let alone date. Friends are there to build each other up, not tear them down and add anxiety.

This one will still be playable offline after the fact, so its offer is way better than the games that are the focus of the Stop Killing Games movement. The games they’re targeting are completely unplayable after being killed.

Most older games will have 2-3 engine loops that they will blend between and pitch accordingly, however Forza 5 specifically was the first in the series to use granular synthesis which is a much more modern approach.

These will have a series of sound files including all the different parts of the engine, exhaust, turbo, etc. Then the software slices these files into tons of pieces in real-time and plays the slices based on the players inputs.

It’s tricky to explain without examples, so here’s a video that does a decent job of explaining how it works in music: https://youtu.be/ftDLRYnRYZQ?si=SEHOl55K7rimi4Eu

I can recommend myNoise if you’re looking for an app with quality soundscapes. Unfortunately not free for all of them, but they are all very high quality and they offer an unlock all option.

I have been saying this for years. The last thing your car should do is take your eyes off the road. This is a 1-3 ton box of metal hurdling at 60+ miles down the highway next to a bunch of other metal boxes that can all kill each other.

And car manufacturers seem to be in love with the idea of you forgetting you’re even driving. Add on all the bs lane assisting, warning bells, alerts, automatic correction, and the driver is convinced that the car will protect them.

These are all systems built on software. Last time I checked, that shit has never been reliable. If the software fails, the manufacturer can just hide behind “They weren’t paying attention!”

Mfer, YOU TRAINED THEM TO IGNORE IT. I don’t know what I’m going to do when all the cars from before touchscreens and digital gauges are no longer running or affordable because I hate the idea of having to look at a screen to change volume or turn on the AC.

Modern cars can suck a fuck.

I speak from experience that no one other than professionals should be handling their own mail servers in 2024. I worked for a mail host. The amount of spam and attacks that befall a mail provider, even a small one, is bonkers. Plus, mail is just too damn important.

I wish it wasn’t the case because the idea of everyone privately hosting their own mail servers would be pretty awesome. Sadly the modern internet makes it way too risky.

There is a puzzle in the original Portal that you can solve by stacking up a bunch of cameras. For the longest time, I had always done this and never attempted to properly solve the puzzle.

I think about how many times things like this happen to individuals that don’t have the weight to warrant an article where their entire collection of online data just gets wiped out and Google responds with: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Don’t trust your data to the cloud, folks.

This quote from Banksy is pretty much my take on advertising:

People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.

It’s not enough to just block them on your own computer. Ads are literally everywhere and pretty much inescapable unless you’re a forest hermit living on the land.

Rule 1 is: The gun is ALWAYS loaded, even when you “know” it isn’t.

Somewhat surprisingly, I’m not able to quickly find someone doing it on YouTube, but it’s the puzzle where there’s a cube propping open a wall panel where Ratman was. There’s several cameras in there. If you take all of the cameras and your cube, you can basically make some janky stairs and climb your way up to the next section.

Also The Program on Netflix. It’s a really well put together documentary made by one of the students at a similar school.

“You cannot love someone else until you love yourself.”

My dad raised me on this. If don’t see yourself worthy of love from even yourself, you’ll never be able to accept it from someone else. Healthy love is mutual. Also, this ties back into the idea that if you don’t see yourself worthy of love, it means you need to work on yourself until you do rather than trying to fill that gap with someone else.

I’ll chip in. I had dropped out of college due to realizing the program wasn’t for me and had to move back in with my mom.

I had a bad habit of forgetting to lock the door, so to retaliate, she took all of my most expensive electronics and stashed them away, but claimed they were stolen (technically they were by her). This included my laptop with a full year of college work, which was mostly art that I cared a lot about.

I found out a year later from my dad that the whole family knew, but she demanded they keep it a secret. When I confronted her, she told me she had thrown it all in the garbage because at the time, I questioned if it was her that did it. Some totally backwards logic there.

For about a month, my Google Hone app swapped between a new interface and the old one about once every couple days. I was never sure what I was going to get.

Old Boy is a movie that constantly has you on edge because you can tell something is going horribly wrong, but you’re not sure what it is. Once you find out, the whole thing is fucked six ways to Sunday.

I thought for years that the idea of spending the money on an AppleTV was not going to be worth it and used Chromecast for years. I was a dedicated Android user for something like 8 or 9 years. I made the switch to iPhone and the AppleTV along with it at one point when I rebuilt my entertainment center and love how it gets the fuck out of your way. Not to mention their UI has absolutely nothing going on. Just your app, a way to find your video, and playback controls.

This isn’t an ad for the AppleTV, but rather just pointing out that having a dedicated device with a simple remote not flooded with 17 layers of UI and ads makes for a great user experience. Google just doesn’t seem to get this and I’d probably still be a dedicated user if they got their act together. Too late now.

Definitely not the case. You can easily get all-in-one mini PCs for $400-500 that can play most any new game at 1080p without much issue. Thanks to all the new stuff like DLSS/FSR, you can get away with a lot more for a lot less.

It’s kind of magic how we are finding that having a third party resolves a lot of the issues. I wonder if the future structure will rely on more of a Prompt > Filter AI > Generative AI > Filter AI > Output. It seems ChatGPT and the Bing implementation have at least some level of AI detection on the image side already.

Nope. They were just trolling and fucking around. It was obvious sarcasm:

Infected Mushroom. They have a sound unlike anything I’ve heard anywhere else. I recommend the album Army of Mushrooms to newcomers, but their entire collection is solid.

Not sure if this applies, but “You can never love someone else until you love yourself” was a lesson my dad taught me from a very young age.

If you don’t like yourself, you’ll almost inevitably end up with someone who is taking advantage because you won’t be able to stand up for yourself and you won’t speak up when they hurt you.

There are the very rare exceptions, but they are the ones who help you help yourself. Someone who truly helps you will not shower you with gifts or compliments, but rather will help you recognize and change what you don’t like about yourself. In other words, “Only a true friend would be that truly honest.”

This sounds interesting, but fuck off with this nonsense. There is nothing “locked down” in SteamOS.

I’m guessing the Deck is a lot of people’s only gaming PC. Much easier entry than a full blown gaming desktop. It may run far worse than a desktop, but it may be the only way to play for them.

A paper clip in your ear sounds like a great way to puncture an eardrum.

I’ll pick up maybe one or two games a year at full price. Just about everything else goes in a wishlist and I’ll just wait for a sale.

This is the key. There are a few projects that can beat it in one way or another, but not all 3. Every project that beats FF in a functional way ends up sacrificing privacy. And those that somehow beat it in privacy are underdeveloped and run into weird compatibility issues or are missing support for key plugins.

The thing that just doesn’t make sense to me about parking minimums for most places is, what are the consequences if you can’t access said business in the moment?

I can understand if it’s a hospital, grocery store or large supermarket where all the essentials are, but for your little mom and pop small business, you just come back later when they’re less busy.

Besides, if all 2-3 spots are full at a tiny shop like this, it’s not likely you’ll get timely service anyway.

Indie indie indie. It’s a play on AAA games, as far as I understand it.

This has the vibe of the Sims 2 voice that would leave for work saying “Shy-bye”.

140GB for PC. Wow. That’s pretty insane. Guess I’ll be saving this for the end of the month.
