Outlook is atrocious what on earth are you talking about? Just trying to use it at work it is so frustrating and the UI is horrendous for everything. Windows is atrocious at this point, search doesn’t work and purposefully confuses new computer users about where is being searched and what is being searched. Ads pop up everywhere in the UI and will continue to spread like a terminal cancer in the UI.
Search on windows also just sucks and takes ages with the default settings (an inexperienced computer user will be using).
The file manager on windows in most marquee windows programs like word, excel etc.. all open up an entirely different file manager half way through the process of saving a file in perhaps the most insane UI pattern to keep from the mess that was Windows 8 (even though I actually really liked the core idea at first).
Windows is buggy AND windows is constantly playing head games with its user by trying to force them to use the edge browser. It is very very confusing to a new computer user what the hell is even going on.
I mean, Windows illegally changed the entire operating system countless people had without getting consent because it would look good for their numbers.
Seriously you are WAYYY out of your league if you are going to claim a nice Linux distribution on good hardware with good driver support (such as some dells or thinkpads) is categorically wayyy worse than trying to use a windows laptop in 2024….

It used to be that Linux was better ideologically because it gave you agency over your computer, but now things have gotten so much worse that the reason is practical and no longer ideological.
Honestly I don’t think I will ever be financially stable enough to drop ~1200 extra JUST for another computer monitor that is only compatible with 5% max of video games. I just have a lcd steamdeck, I can’t even afford a full gaming computer, asking if I have VR equipment is like asking a starving person if they have been taking any cooking classes at the expensive Italian restaurant nearby lately.
To be honest I don’t like the idea of video games being made ONLY for VR unless they are extremely focused on being a quirky unique VR experience as this whole “revolution” in video gaming feels like from the beginning it was meant to provide exclusivity like a status object not a gaming device.
Unlike other gaming revolutions that perhaps started with high end gaming requirements and then evolved into broader contexts and other games that worked on potato computers, from the beginning VR has felt like the point was to become part of an exclusive rich people club.
I will take VR seriously when VR heavy games developed by developers with access to multi-thousand dollar high end VR equipment actually begin to have a serious adult conversation about the barriers that requiring VR equipment creates for players (that they ignore hanging out play testing their game on a VR headset that costs more than my car), and the spirit of inclusivity that violates. Come up with a way for the rest of us to play, integrate gyroscope sensors for a 2d tablet, phone or steam deck screen so it can be rotated held out in front of you like a “window”into the VR world. If your solution longterm is “well maybe people without VR headsets just shouldn’t play my game” then I will not give you money, and I think your game design goals are misguided at a fundamental level whether I own a VR headset or not.
I know that isn’t the point and that people love VR because it is cool as fuck, but it is real hard for me not to get that vibe from VR I guess?
I did get the non-vr marineverse cup though, I honestly can’t tell if it is basically the same as VR regatta or an outdated version of the same engine, it is very hard to tell just from the steam listing and stuff lol. Which again.. why??! I feel like they are just assuming if I want to have the real, current up to date experience I will have already purchased a VR headset.
My understanding I got was they are basically the same game at the heart of it, but that vr regatta has a bunch of VR stuff bolted on top of it, but if that turns out not to be the case I will definitely ask for a refund if the non-vr game is clearly being ignored in favor of development only for the VR game. I don’t think that is the case however, on the contrary a lot of people seem to mention the dev being really friendly and genuinely inspired to spread awareness about sailing.
I feel like I did when I impulsively splurged on Motor Town because it clicked with me so well, which is a very confident feeling of no regrets. This game has already blown me away with the clarity of its gameplay vision.
I hope resource use can come a bitttt down on the deck but its fine it is an absolutely perfect handheld game in gameplay.

Bringing it back to the whole thing about Linux, can you imagine how frustrating it would be to have to help debug a user’s Linux installation when they already need help with installing a browser add on? I work with tech and Linux on a daily basis and I already find it frustrating doing it for myself (fuck Nvidia drivers). No way am I gonna recommend it to someone else.

I will say Windbound looks like it kind of launched with some frustrating game bugs and confused players a bit, but it is at a crazy steep discount right now and looks like it is worth buying. It has real sailing mechanics as far as I can tell and involves the exploration and navigation aspect of sailing that I love.

Sail Forth also looks like another dime a dozen pirate ship games with ships that don't act at all like a sailing ship but rather just look cool with animated sails and drive like a tank... but the sailing mechanics are actually apparently really deep and fun. They are arcadey, but the spirit is real sailing.
Oh damn I never knew that, see in games like that I never even bother to jump in a sailboat when I see one because I know chances are it is going to be lame and make me sad and the sailboat wasn’t put there as a drivable vehicle to make me happy but rather the programmers just made it so you could drive all the boats even if some of them were painfully boring and oversimplified to the point of being an utter waste of time and honestly kind of a middle finger to sailing. Like Saints Row style comedic games should just have the character go down into the cabin, come back up with a chainsaw, cut the mast down and then turn on the outboard to make it into a motor boat, that would be way less horrendous than programmers spending a bunch of time animating totally fake sails that just magically spin the wind direction every which way they go (it hurts my brain a little just trying to explain it from the standpoint of actually understanding the very barebones basics of sailing).
I have always had a bit of a grudge against Rockstar for not having their sailboats behave like sailboats in their games. They absolutely have the money and they have shown the aptitude to make mechanically superb focused games like the midnight club series or more specifically the table tennis game they made that is… just a damn fucking good table tennis game.
Rockstar could have made their sailboats behave like sailboats at least in GTA 5 and when people realized that was awesome they could have stupendously easily turned it into it’s own entire separate sailing game built on the GTA engine… from there small rowable sloops for inland waterways useful for running rum covertly to unexpected and unwatched places where cargo could be discretely offloaded would naturally slot PERFECTLY into a Red Dead Redemption 2 dlc focused on swamps and waterways….

No excuses game developers, learn to sail, go play Pancake Sailor, I will not accept this level of extreme sailing ignorance going forward. Sailing is one of the dopest skills humans have ever mastered (and is certainly one sentient aliens on ocean planets all over the universe must have mastered as well, certainly before becoming a spacefaring race if that is even possible right?) and unlike space video games, the moment to moment skill of sailing a ship is fundamentally rich in sensory feedbacks and necessary minute control corrections.
I was so fucking hyped when I realized Valheim actually has the fundamentals of real sailing in it, certainly I had already fallen in love with Valheim at that point, discovering the sailboats weren't half-asssed just reaffirmed to me in that moment that the lifelong partner I had been looking for and never finding in Minecraft was here, waiting for me, with a beard and torch. This whole time it wasn't me for being weird and always getting really disconnected from the core gameplay loop of Minecraft after the initial rush of revisiting the game after awhile ran off in the way others who liked the game as much as me didn't seem to... and this whole time I wondered what was wrong with ME.
Valheim whispered into my ear "honey, you KNOW what you want and I am going to give it to you" and shattered that whole complex in an instant when that shitty raft popped into the water in front of me after I crafted it for the first time.

Were you as condescending to them in person as you are being in referencing them right now? Why is not knowing how to install a Firefox extension some indicator of foreclosure on the possibility of that person becoming computer literate along whatever metrics you define? There are plenty of smart people out there who can learn how to use a computer for very complex tasks who have just simply never learned about extensions for Firefox. This is a very feasible and normal reality.
Do you know how to change the oil on your car yourself? Do simple plumbing jobs? Could you run a classroom of middle schoolers and keep them all focused while keeping your eye on the shy sad kid in the back who tends to disappear if you don’t engage them? What about basic healthcare changes or cooking? What about outdoor work or basic small engine maintenance? Do you even know shit about the most basic species of trees in your backyard? Do you know the species of songbirds you often hear outside your window? Do you even pay attention to that? Do you know how to drive a dirt bike extremely fast on a rough dirt road? Do you know how to adjust for the violent explosive power of turbo lag in a car with a turbocharger so that torque oversteer doesn’t launch you off the road? Do you know how to sew and repair basic garments? To weave? Can you even fish? Like could you literally even just catch a fish to save your life right now if I handed you a fishing rod unassembled with no instructions?
My point is, don’t go looking for confirmation of how stupid or lazy people are or how limited their capacity is to evolve and grow by casting the shapes of their ignorance onto the floor and trying to read some magic language from that.
Maybe they don’t know because they are hopelesssly stupid, but maybe not? If they are intelligent and they don’t know computers then those are the perfect people to teach linux. Then it is their first language instead of windows, many linux distro are perfectly fine for this at this point.

yeah the free pancake game I linked is very very simple in scope,it isnt meant to be a main game or anything (marineverse cup is the nonvr "main" version I think).
The sailing model is good though and the simplicity is a perfect intro into sailing skills, which I think is the point. Think of it as a simple meditative idle game where you learn a very real skill.
I am interested in trying other companies sailing games like sailwind, sail forth (arcadey but apparently true sailing in spirit) and maybesome of the more expensive ones at somepoint idk.

I would love to hear other's recommendations on games with deep and nuanced true sailing mechanics, it is almost impossible to deduce from the outside with a game even if sailboats are everywhere in the theme. I also dont vibe with sailing for the intense racing vibes, more for the experience of wandering, that is what a sunfish always represented to me growing up, I could care less about zooming around a specific track, small pancake sailors are the mountainbikes of nearshore choppy but moderate inland coastal waters.

Motor Town - I am now on the top 10 leaderboard for taxi driving because I play on my steam deck lots. It is perfect for it. Sometimes it gets the steam deck too hot I need to fiddle with settings.
Easy Red 2 - just buy it, it runs awesome on the steam deck, and with joysticks you can get a p51 mustang deadly locked in, maybe not quite a joystick but close.
Operation Harsh Doorstep - free realistic modern shooter with vehicles and modding support with a lot of potential, most maps run decent and scoped weapons arent bad on steam deck with gyroscope on, it really helps with recoil.

I actually think examining the rise of crack in the US and how it was used as a political wedge and xenophobic tool of fear mongering helps explain why marijuana is illegal in the US the easiest, because the forces and structures are the same for crack being highly illegal as they are for marijuana, just much less thinly veiled and dialed up to 11.
As a musician and composer it really took the life out of my identity as a composer seeing an alternative to bandcamp never really form and then one day waking up to it bought by Epic.
I didn’t cry that day, but I might as well have, it made me extraordinarily sad to see that headline and I imagine there are actually countless talented musicians out there who will never actuate on their creative vision because the environment for music production is at this point, downright hostile towards artists and musicians considering the amount of work music production is.
It takes an obscene amount of work to take a song from something that has promise to being as polished as listeners demand nowadays, and listeners won’t even give your song a chance on actual speakers. You have to twist and warp your music so it sounds good on essentially monophonic phone speakers with shitty frequency coverage or otherwise nobody will give it a try on speakers for actually listening to music. Doesn’t matter though, nobody is going to actually support you for the art you make.

Xonotic by far and away!
Xonotic is like if you took the inspired weapon alt-fire modes from Unreal Tournament (video rundown of weapons) and bolted them onto the downright spiritual movement of Quake (I feel my soul drawing closer to the Flying Spaghetti Monster with every strafe jump I make). You might wonder how the hell you play one of the fastest Quake multiplayer derived shooters in existence using the joysticks on the Steam Deck (the answer is Gyroscope massively complements Joystick aiming once you get used to it). I am dead serious the Steam Deck should just come preinstalled with Xonotic and a control scheme like this, it is brilliant and Xonotic is probably the most resource efficient 3D competitive multiplayer game in existence so your Steam Deck battery will love it too… your deck’s fan can take a nap while you play, it is never needed with this game outside of one little brief whir to load a level.

As a last note the bots in Xonotic can be set up to BRUTALLY hard difficulties but the bots are fun to play against so long as you set the difficulty right for you, they move how players should in a strafe jumping game, they push for good items when they spawn on the map and they try to escape when you pin them into a corner with a decisive advantage. It makes a superb pick up and play experience with no internet connection required that you can jump in and out of as chaotically as you want while you are on the go with your deck.

Beyond All Reason

Beyond All Reason is the latest in over a decade of Total Annihilation inspired games made on the open source Spring Engine (though I believe most energy is behind a recent fork of the Spring Engine called the Recoil Engine). The RTS genre picking to hedge it’s bets on StarCraft style rts games and not Total Annihilation style rts games I think is a tragedy (though understandable) and in my opinion helped lead to the stagnation of the genre (well except Forged Alliance Forever/SupCom 1 and well... Planetary Annihilation got pretty decent after I stopped paying attention it seems like). Thankfully the open source Spring Engine has been a perennial source of refinement and innovation on full scale RTS games, and the various TA inspired projects over the years have taken ideas originally introduced in TA and elevated them to a level that is honestly pretty shocking for a series of open source community projects in an essentially dead genre of games (classic RTS games).

Brilliant game and like the original Total Annihilation being able to hold shift and que up many commands as well as easily instruct units into formations makes playing BAR so much less of a headache than trying to micro the shit out of everything in a game like StarCraft (see 6:50 in this video). Also unlike StarCraft the fighters and bombers actually fly around like planes instead of being exactly the same as land units except they hover.
Really all you have to do to get the Steam Deck’s controls working well is start with the default WASD and Mouse template and bind a key to toggle gyroscope so you can use it for making your quick fiddly mouse movements with the joysticks perfectly precise and then figure out what key you want to bind shift to in order to make queuing orders up for a unit easy to do (with that template it defaults to a joystick click which for something you will do a bazillion times over the course of a battle ain’t gonna do it chief).
…and sure I wouldn’t jump into competitive games with mouse and keyboard players who have been munching on TA-style RTS mechanics for a good portion of their lives at this point but the reason I recommend this game is over the last 5 years or so the AI has gotten REALLY good, it isn’t like you are playing a dumb unit spamming algorithm that gets an upper hand over you by just cheating on eco, the AI plays fair (at least on moderate settings) and will probe your defenses, tech up and react to your choices. There is also a mode where you fight dinosaurs (called chickens) in a co-op horde survival fashion.
sigh it looks like most of the community has moved to discord though, I fear it will end up killing the community long term if the community only really gathers there to interact. I don’t have a control scheme for this one yet, but I have no doubt it will be easier to play this game on a Steam Deck than a normal laptop without the number pad (we can just use one of the joysticks!). One of the very very nice things about CDDA is that as overwhelming of a game as it is to learn the control scheme is actually very thoughtfully laid out and when you forget a command just press ? and you can search for commands by describing what they do. You just gotta remember ? and you can learn the rest of the keybindings on the fly.

Rigs Of Rods An odd one, an old one, it is an open source driving game with advanced physics.
If the point of the Steam Deck is to play games in contexts that you otherwise would never have been able to, having a game you can mindlessly drive around and crash into things while watching how pretty and cool it looks is a no brainer. This game has years and years of updates and is a quasi-predecessor to BeamNG which is another superb game (though not as resource efficient I believe). It also actually has a more generalist, capable engine than BeamNG appears to (with vehicles being able to have fully articulating parts like cranes that interact with the world).
I really think this game will just keep chugging along doing it’s own thing long into the foreseeable future and it makes a great companion to the deck especially if you have a kid that you might want to give them something to play that is more a simple physics toy than some complex game with lots of rules to memorize or comprehend. Bonus points, the realistic physics emulation of crashes will make it so your kid will never doubt how dangerous driving in reality is :)

Just because the land was stolen from indigenous cultures doesn’t mean they don’t still rightfully have a claim on it. At a bare minimum they should be able to demand preservation of the sacred places among the land stolen from them.
If you want to come after “people trying to make everything into sacred spaces” or something, sure, let’s talk about the way churches can completely dodge taxes and other laws that the rest of us have to adhere to (at least in the US), why waste your breath saying “c’mon” about a devastated indigenous population protecting a beautiful and highly unusual natural feature?
As a last point, do you honestly NOT understand how this place or Everest or Niagra Falls or the Giants Causeway are sacred places? You don’t have to subscribe to spirituality of that culture or even believe in god at all to understand when a place is sacred. Do you look at a place like Niagra and think “meh, just another place who cares”? Do you think the tallest mountain in the world should have so many tourists shuffling along to climb to the top that the mountain is inundated with trash?
When an indigenous culture identifies a place as sacred, those are the people that know that land better than anyone else and have passed down a culture of stories born out of that landscape, we should listen.
How cool would it be if all the smart people working at massive tech companies like google actually were working in places where their efforts could improve the world instead of being swallowed up by the dumb dysfunctional politics of a too-big-to-fail company that hoovers up interesting ideas through acquisitions and unceremoniously strangles them.
I mean I get why people running open source, small software projects are going to find it hard not to be convinced just by the fact that they are probably getting their ego stroked super hard by meeting with extremely powerful and rich people… but this is such a stupid idea.
We don’t need meta, they don’t DO anything. What does meta do for the fediverse? Sure you can argue it brings in a ton of users but meta is a for-profit entity and it is never going to truly bring those users into the fediverse. Meta has an absurd amount of money, if they haven’t committed to creating a fediverse like idea in the past what makes everyone think now is different?
Why is a massive corporation with the money to fund 1000 fediverse software projects coming to a bunch of volunteers for help? Seriously, think about it, it really doesn’t make sense unless meta isn’t coming here for help but rather to mine and extract the value here for itself. We have ALREADY built most of the software tools that a too-big-to-function tech company with a lot of programmers could help with anyways, it is far too late in the game for meta to do anything meaningful there besides speed things up a little.
If we accept meta into the fediverse it might seem like we are winning by technically adding a ton of users but for heaven’s sake people need to realize winning doesn’t mean giving all your shit to the other side. The fediverse will become barely any better than the current corporate social network world, so what is the point?
I mean, they are NEVER going to invest in a significant amount of human moderators, that would basically admit the business model of a for-profit social network is fundamentally busted. They will “try” to do it with “””Ai””” and also through underpaid employees in moderation farms in third world countries who are constantly getting traumatized from having to see all the most offensive shit… but it is never going to work.
The question is, why did you come here in the first place? For me, letting meta in violates most of those reasons.
Maybe THIS time if we overthrow and disenfranchise moderate political entities in Iran and get a rightwing nutjob into power then Iran will be free like us!

The headline is really burying the lead here and it actually pisses me off quite a bit.
Hurricane forecasting models that have been running for years and have been established to at least be moderately predictive are unanimously predicting the worst hurricane season EVER predicted by computer models.
The temperatures west of Africa in the Atlantic where hurricanes are born and grow are already at levels that the Atlantic only reaches in mid July even in warmer years. This should be incredibly concerning to everybody on the east coast+gulf coast of the US and living in the Caribbean.
All of the hurricane forecasters I have seen are shocked. All of the parameters are in place for a perfect storm of a horrific hurricane season.
At this point all we can do is cross our fingers and hope most of the bad hurricanes miss landfall and fly out into the Atlantic but we are gambling with money we don’t have here.
Global sea surface temperatures, the yellow line is 2023, temperatures have been smashing records going back 30 years or so every single day for all of 2023 (starting in March) up until present day.
Temps look like they are going down, but even if this current downward trend continues an absolutely devastating amount of heat is being poured into the oceans. The next couple of weeks will tell us if this was some kind of weird super el nino we are coming out of and that is where the heating was coming from or whether we have entered a new climate paradigm and if that doesn’t scare you that climate scientists can’t tell yet you are frankly an idiot.
All the alarms are blaring, this is giving lots of indications we are on a far worse and faster timeline than the current mainstream media/politics narrative is acknowledging (and by extension what climate scientists can actually say in public without getting shamed or fired).

Bandcamp used to be like that, ultimately it is a fundamentally empty promise, someday sooner than you think it will happen to valve. Enjoy it while it lasts but lets keep a keen eye on the future.
... I am not just talking about little details and preferences here? Windows products are increasingly broken and dysfunctional at every level. Features don't work, features are randomly changed and broken, nothing is consistent, core features of the computer are made opaque, any given Linux package manager is about 1000000 times more trustable than the ad ridden, sketchy, bloatware filled Windows store where you have to hunt for actually useful and trustable tools. One of my old bosses had his work windows computer update to a new windows OS without really asking him (technically it did, but then it just kept scheduling an OS upgrade until he missed it). It didn't break his computer, but he had thousands and thousands of hours of cad drafting work on that computer and Windows could have EASILY fucked up in the update process, or the old software we were using could have EASILY not been compatible. Windows basically flipped a coin for whether they were going to utterly grind my bosses business to a halt and cause utter panic or just have the computer update. This is not "user friendly" software design, this is not "easy to use software made by an extremely competent software company".
....because for 99% of people who are going to be using a computer for light email, research and text editing work they are going to be using a laptop? I don't really understand what about my argument doesn't apply to windows prebuilts that have good driver support for linux...?
I think it is completely reasonable to be upset when someone is condescendingly foreclosing the possibility that something can happen when the evidence they are using for it is outdated and they refuse to update it in their heads. The only response at that point when someone refuses to re-evaluate their position and continues to "speak for the group" when they really don't represent the group anymore is to make it even clearer that they don't speak for a group, and I am sorry if my method offended here, I believe your heart is in the right place but please stop trying to tell us about how stupid and unwilling people are to learn new things. Please please please just keep your mouth closed, it doesn't help anyone, period. Even if you were right, there would be nothing to change in our actions as it would just be hopeless to even try?
This isn't 2015, a good Linux distribution is as polished, easy to use, and easy to explain to a newbie computer user as Windows is. If you aren't ready to accept that shrugs I mean fine but don't push your outmoded narrative into conversations that might actually convince someone who doesn't know about Linux that it isn't worth checking out as a serious alternative. You are actively doing damage to the future of this software movement by dismissing it offhand like this.
