I was curious about this last week and found an article that provides some other examples of this type of usage:

"The translation’s grammatical archaism made it even more powerful, resonating with lines in Tennyson (“I am become a name, for always roaming with a hungry heart”), Shakespeare (“I am come to know your pleasure”), and the Bible (“I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness”)."

https://www.openculture.com/2023/07/j-robert-oppenheimer-recites-the-line-now-i-am-become-death-the-destroyer-of-worlds.html

The article also provides some commentary from a scholar about how to translate the original Sanskrit that Oppenheimer is referencing.

Edit: This article is referenced in the above article, and provides some interesting insight into why Oppenheimer was thinking of this quote. His situation was very similar to the situation of Arjuna, who speaks the original phrase in the ancient story. It really gives some additional insight into how many different mental levels Oppenheimer must have been able to conceptualize.

Also possibly becathe doesn't own the building and needs approval of the owner.

In the US, a University is usually a collection of colleges. Each college has a somewhat independent structure from other colleges within the University, and each is led by its own Dean. Each college has different requirements of entry and provide rules for what it takes to get a degree from that college. But ultimately, you get a degree from something like "The University of Whatever, College of Engineering". All the colleges have some certain amount of oversight and guidelines set up by the overall institution.

I read somewhere that the order of "locking him up" could be appealed extensively and would be an effective delay tactic for him. I think that is why the DC judge wants to speed things up in response to this behavior.

Don't you have to use a lawyer licensed in Georgia? Maybe he got thrown in jail for being an idiot.

Don't you need a lawyer who is licensed in the state? Why would you want to fly in a lawyer from out of state, even if you could afford it?

You can blow out a candle

but you can't blow out a fire.

Once the flames begin to catch

the wind will blow it higher.

.... And the eyes of the world are watching now.

They are the last lyrics of Biko, by Peter Gabriel. The way he sings those lyrics as the song builds toward the end hits me every time I hear it. The last line is sung after a slight pause, and it sounds like a veiled threat to the leaders of South Africa that killed Stephen Biko. Also, it didn't take a long time for change to happen in South Africa after the event, but when he wrote the song it was still several years away. So at the time it was still wishful thinking that "the wind would blow the flames higher".

If you are comfortable with using command line stuff, I found this little Python script perfect for my needs. I copied my subscriptions from my original instance to two others:

https://github.com/wescode/lemmy_migrate

I don't know enough programming to know whether the tool could be stealing my authentication, but my passwords are random and I don't really care if anything happens to those.

Edit: You have to run this when the servers are actually functioning. I was migrating my stuff away from my lemmy.world account because of the overloading there, and the server was pretty slow while it was copying my subscriptions. I ran it again an hour later and it picked up the few subscriptions it missed on the first pass. It's smart enough to check if the new server has a particular community subscription already in place.

If that's your dumbest idea, you are undervalued wherever you work. That sounds like a pretty interesting idea.

I read somewhere that there was a general Lemmy bug with Hot and/or Active not refreshing without a server reset. I've heard people say that Best 6 or 12 hours is the best for now.

Is it clear how close they have to be to an ex-President at all times? Is the law written that they need to be in visual contact at all times? I have no idea.

I would like to see Jimmy Wales run Twitter and Reddit clones. If there is anyone that you can trust to not turn a website into a commercial entity, it's the guy running one of the world's most visited site with no advertising.

Maybe Wikimedia can host Mastodon and Lemmy server.

Either him or the guy who runs Craigslist, with no obvious intentions of trying to wring money out his site

Thank you! This has been driving me crazy. You are a hero.

I don't think he will be "in prison" in any sense during the booking, so it doesn't sound too important about how close they are.

Bob and Doug Mackenzie thought me to roughly convert C to F by taking the temperature in Celsius, doubling it and then adding 30. It gets you in the ballpark.

Do you know if there are any formats that provide for native looping like gif? I find that feature useful for some standalone files.

Just FYI, sub.rehab lists more than just Lemmy instances. I found a listing for a squabbles community in there, but that is not federated with Lemmy.

I ran a few things on an Odroid for years, which is like a Pi, and I wanted to upgrade. I shopped for an SBC with more RAM and found the prices getting high pretty quickly. I went with a mini PC made by Beelink- and have been very happy. There are many price points, based on RAM and drive: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=bee+link+pc

Aside from getting much more memory and storage for your money, I much prefer this hardware over an SBC because I can use any normal distro. With the Odroid I was stuck with the distros provided by the vendor.

In a trial, the prosecution goes first and presents their full case. Then the defense gets their turn to refute anything presented by the prosecution. Even if he pleads the 5th, his lawyers will do their best to refute any presented earlier by the prosecution.

I always see the lemmyverse site recommended, but I have trouble subscribing to any community I find on there. If you click on a link on that site, it takes you to that instance. But you need an account on that instance to push the "subscribe" button. I can't figure out a way to subscribe to, say, lemmy.world/c/technology when my account is on lemm.ee

But unfortunately not stupid enough to actually testify.

I lost track, but I assumed this was already part of the mishandled documents case. We've heard so much about this recording already, I didn't realize that he hadn't already been charged for this.

I was going to post this exact comment. My Pixel default launcher had a huge amount of wasted space at the top. I also use Nova.

Doesn't this quote from the article make it seem like Trump was making his own decision:

" ... claimed that Trump himself read a series of academic law review articles about the Electoral Count Act to brush up on the relevant law."

Agreed. But the owner of the building would presumably be able to control modifications of his own building.

How did you install it on your Android device? Is there an .apk I could install?

I'm going to run this on my VPS but I don't see instructions on how to use the .toml configuration file to specify all the options. Where do I place the libreddit.toml file after installation?

Also, I just started the Docker image on my local Linux box using the example to put it on port 8080, but I can only access it from my browser on port 80. Is that example command correct?

I'm curious why they haven't been kicked out after not paying rent for so long. Why does the owner allow him to stay rent free?

There's no way he would testify in any court proceeding where he doesn't have to. This is just public bluster like always. It seems like the only good advice he takes from his lawyers is to avoid testifying to anything under oath.

Yes, I actually used Portainer on my VPS when I was learning Docker last year. It makes some things easier, but it does add another layer of complexity, learning to navigate the Portainer interface and setting up Stacks to deploy your compose files. With my home server I was trying to experiment with "the natural Docker" procedure.

I find one line particularly powerful, and it's been used in a couple famous songs.

Jenny Lou Carson (1944), made popular by Willie Nelson (1966)

I'd trade all of my tomorrows for just one yesterday For what good is life without the one you love I'd trade all of my tomorrows, they're worthless anyway If my arms can't hold the one I am dreaming of

Just an empty world is all I have before me I'd give anything if you were with me now I'd trade all of my tomorrows for just one yesterday I don't want to live without you anyhow

Kris Kristofferson Me and Bobby McGee (1969)

And I'd trade all of my tomorrows For one single yesterday Holdin' Bobby's body next to mine Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose Nothin' left is all that Bobby left me.

Thanks for the link. How many days does this event last?

Yeah, I agree. That phrase was the more memorable one for me for many years until I noticed the "tomorrow" phrase that precedes it. Both of them together in one verse makes it the strongest verse of any song I know of.

I can't even find a place on lemm.ee, using my browser, that would let me paste an arbitrary community path.

Oops. I don't fully understand Docker and I misread the instructions for selecting the port.

On a related topic, is there any reason why I had to use "sudo" to run these Docker commands? I tried both without sudo and they both failed.

Are the sites with other top level domains like archive.is the same company? I've seen requests to donate to various Archive sites but I can tell if they are all the same company.

I see that Yacht is alpha. Any problems with stability?

This page is a nice way to see headlines for various topics.

https://brutalist.report/?limit=15

You can make an account and choose the sources you want and how many titles to show. That link will show 15 titles from each source. The titles refresh often, so it stays fresh.

Edit: Actually, I just compared the page before and after I logged in and I'm not sure if you can customize the sources. I'm not sure what the account actually does. If you want to specify your sources, I like using this online RSS reader: https://theoldreader.com/

I've been using since Google got rid of their reader. This one is sort of a copy. The site holds the RSS feeds that you enter, and there is an Android app that will let you sign in an view from mobile. I think the app is called gReader.

That's the command I used.

sudo docker run -d --name libreddit -p 80:8080 libreddit/libreddit

Then I checked the port traffic with sudo lsof -i -P | grep -i "listen" and saw it running on port 80. And I could only connect to it from my browser on port 80. But it doesn't matter, I switched to teddit in Docker and have it running with a compose file, so I'm set.
