I'm wondering, did you buy the Vita recently or did you buy it while it was still sold in stores? I'm seeing a big resurgence of handheld emulation and think it's wonderful that it lets us play through famous older titles! I just bought a 3DS XL and am planning to play some old games I missed, too!

Yeah I love the fact that in this game, the message was just for the sake of it, while nowadays it would be in order to keep the person playing it addicted to whatever skinner box is integrated into the gameplay loop.

For me it was Ocarina of Time. Ugly, and very clumsy. And I play tons of retro games. Early 3D stuff can be rough.

Whaaat I can play PS1 on the go?! That's great

I am so happy for this guy. He must be so stoked!

I was just wondering - was there not a less ridiculous way available to increase revenue?

It looks delicious

MVG is a legend

I enjoyed these games, but as you said, they are not very scary, especially after you get used to the atmosphere.

What a great company, I love their products

If I may add a counter-argument. I avoided RetroArch for years due to this, but it is only partially true. If you are even a little bit proficient in using a computer, it will feel slightly finicky, but once you have it setup, it is pretty easy. Many things in emulation or hacking are much more complicated. I now use Retroarch daily and feel kind of stupid for avoiding it.

This is just terrible. I love Deus Ex and was hoping to see a new game in the next 5 years.

Beat Saber. it was the Christmas time 2020, so during the pandemich, and I was living alone and had a lot of free time. Got myself a PSVR set. I maybe bough a game full price just once before. And Beat Saber cost me like 40 dollars. But it was so worth it. Played all of it, and even bought some DLC. An amazing game.

The first reviews are very promising! :)

Sad that there isn't a physical version

I had a similar experience. Funnily enough I love walking simulators, or slow burns with similar mechanics so I was exactly in the target audience for this game but somehow it didn't click with me. I can understand which elements make the game great, but these elements have been done better by other games (in my opinion). I have great respect for the craft though.

This is why I love the fediverse. I would never find this article by myself.

Thank you for this personal recommendation. Was interesting to read from first-hand experience!

Yes, I just remembered this too!

Wow what a story. It shows how games can be meaningful. Hope you're living well!

This channel is pure solid gold. Love every video he releases.

It was my first game I bought for the PS4! I was skeptical because I am not a fan of walking simulators but the detective angle made it really fun! I was also surprised at how good the graphics were, it's a darn beautiful game!

I was in college at the time and I regret not buying it. It was not that popular in my neck of the woods

That is so cool! Didn't know this was possible. Is there any lag?

Slightly more focused on emulation but Modern Vintage Gamer is a very high quality channel

Oh, I did play Oxenfree! Heh, until you described it like you did I never thought of it as a horror game, but you are absolutely right, it is pretty creepy! Thanks for recommending Signalis, I will check it out

This looks great! It's not too retro at all!

Honestly it didn't bother me that much, the story to me was more 7/10 forgettable rather than off-putting.

I just hope they haven't abandoned it completely. But it would be nice to hear from the mods about the issue you raised. Would be a pity to lose such an active community.

As for games, I started Earthbound, finally

I was also a latecomer to this game (played it in college). The time jumps were crazy!

Yeah that is just laziness. When I wqs a kid consoles were too expensive so everyone wqs gaming on their PC or handheld consoles. You either used a keyboard or a shitty knock-off controller. I couldn't imagine paying big bucks for a new gamepad. Even though I love games I still like to be thrifty with my gaming related purchases and treat myself only once in a while. Sometimes I wonder if the people who get the newest stuff would necessarily notice if they were playing a PS4 or PS5 game.

Nintendo knocking it out of the park. It is a pity that their best games are coming at the perceived end of the generation.

That is a very interesting take. 4:3 games do have a certain retro feeling to them!

I love the jankiness of the era. I also played most of the post-2010 games that are similar to it.

Added Ctrl Alt Ego to my Steam Wishlist - never heard of it, great tip!

This was actually one of my favorite early ios games. At the time I couldn't believe that an ios device was capable of such graphics.

If I may add a different suggestion: have you considered hacking one of the old consoles that you have/can buy used to enable retro gaming? A used Wii or Wii U for instance have great wireless controllers available, especially used Wiis without the games and accessories are dirt cheap. The process is very simple, just do a quick google. Basically, hack an old console, load the ROMs you have, get an appropriate wireless controller (8bitdo makes A LOT of compatible wireless gamepads), and you're good to go.

Here is an example, for the Wii U, though the Wii is probably even easier (but SD)

You could also get the games using the virtual console offerings for the Switch if you don't want to mess with ROMs. I know the switch has that adapter thing that holds the nunchucks in a 'classic controller' gamepad form. Even very old consoles sometimes have great retro gaming or homebrew options, the classic Xbox to name one example.

All in all I think this would be the fastest and maybe even cheapest option.

Also, kudos for nurturing the love of video games in your son.

Thanks for checking! I will update the post.

Such a cool site! Very nostalgic vibes

It is a bit better on the PC where you use the mouse

Happy to hear that Torna is a good game, Xenoblade 2 is my favorite. I think the best part of the Xenoblade games are the Titans. The environments are incredible because there is always a reminder that people are living their lives on a huge flying colossus
