No idea, and I don't care. What matters for me is that there are enough people on Lemmy to keep it interesting.

Could somebody explain what "fedipact" means?

A lot of people with mental health issues self-medicate with illegal drugs. This guy was probably suffering from depression, and the police pushed him too far. So ridiculous and tragic.

When I'm using the restroom, the last thing I care about is which genitals the person in the other stall has. Why would this be a concern?

This is gonna do to Biden what COVID-19 did to Trump.

We don't get a vote of no confidence. There's no box to check that says "No Trump".

Also, Hillary got more votes than Trump did, so simply having more voters on your side doesn't necessarily mean that Trump will lose.

I love Linux, but I don't think that Linux users should promote it like it's a free Windows, because it isn't. You should learn Linux because you want to learn Linux, not because you hate Windows.

Frankly, I didn't go 100% Linux right away. I dual-booted for several years first.

Aren't we all supposed to be dead by now from the poisonous vaccine? This has got to be the slowest-working poison I've ever seen.

I thought we had laws against cruel and unusual punishment.

I don't know how to counteract that.

Simple. You don't. When I'm debating, I'm usually not trying to convince the person I'm debating with. I'm trying to convince a disinterested third party who reads the exchange later.

Add to that somebody could be genetically "black" and pass as "white". It isn't based on DNA; it's based on perception.

The solution is donate them. Don't send them to a landfill. Give poor students a free laptop with Linux installed, etc. There are probably thousands of uses for an old computer that are better than sending it to a landfill.

I'm not transgender, so you probably should ask them.

What I do know is that this is a major issue for them, to the point where some of them develop bladder issues from avoiding the restroom out of fear of being bullied. When people tell me that something is causing them to suffer, I tend to believe them, unless there's some compelling evidence otherwise.

When I was in college, I knew a transman. One day, I walked into the men's restroom as he was walking out, and one of the other men in the restroom turned to his friend and said, "What's she doing in here?" (Meaning the transman.) Now imagine if you had to deal with the possibility of being bullied that way (or worse!) every time you wanted to use the restroom.

The issue lies in not all those people vote.

Partly. There's also the issue with the electoral college, because that makes some votes worth more than others (depending on where you live).

Nonono.... It's "never forget what happened to the Jews".

Well, that really puts things in perspective.

At Microsoft, this strategy was called "embrace, extend, extinguish", but it's important to realize that it isn't a practice that's exclusive to Microsoft.

It's traditional to play lots of video games. Trust me on this one.

It isn't a problem. There are already too many people on the Earth.

He has a trans daughter who disowned him. I don't know why, but you can probably guess.

Some girls have a problem with it. Should we ignore their concerns?

Yes. The concerns of transphobes (and other bigots) should be ignored.

This is the UK.

How is educating children "grooming"? Do you say that they are being "groomed" into mathematical ideology by math teachers?

Do you think that children shouldn't be taught about trans people?

Honestly I’m wandering what would it taste like.

Like fried rice and fish, I'd imagine.

Some sites work much better with Chromium. I default to Firefox (LibreWolf), though.

I can't imagine keeping myself locked into only one browser. For as long as I can remember, I've always used at least two.

I think the reason why people in the US care about this genocide (and not others) is because the US is funding it so hard.

Do you understand the definition of the word? If you have an aversion to sharing a space with trans people, then you're a transphobe.

No, instead they would be like "Why is this girl in the boys' bathroom".

Biden was trying to “finish what FDR started” in addressing rural poverty, education and medical care, Greene said. She also accused Biden of trying to turn America socialist.

"Socialist" is a good term to scare folks. (At least, folks over 50.) FDR...not so much.

We can selfishly brow-beat them into voting for Biden.

Shaming people into voting for your candidate doesn't work, but Dems will do it anyway. It splits the left and helps Republicans, but they either aren't aware of this or don't care.

As a rule of thumb, if my computer is working without any problems, I'll just ignore warnings and errors that show up during boot or shutdown.

I think that transphobia should be addressed, but not by taking away rights from trans people.

Could somebody set an instance up on a nes

I think that in order to run Lemmy you'd need at least a PlayStation.

It's a lot easier to remember that than #@?Zk23!nPw

Suddenly those boomer memes about the wife and husband hating each other make a lot more sense.

They're all back online now because of articles like this.

Being against apartheid is not a "far left" position.

Why are they defederating? Is that what you're asking?

ETA: There's a good article behind the reasoning here, using XMPP as an object lesson. Corporations can co-opt open standards through a Microsoft-ish "embrace, extend, extinguish" strategy.

More competition is better, but Facebook is still the 800-pound gorilla. It took a landmark court case to stop Microsoft from taking over the Web. We might need something similar for social networking.

“but he couldn’t even win the primary”

TBH that says a lot more about the Democrats than it does about him.

Just wait. The only reason why Lemmy is more polite is because it's smaller. I think that attitude comes with the territory, unfortunately. If you want to have a less toxic community, the first thing you need to do is get rid of the downvote button. Downvotes are inherently toxic. Lemmy is actually worse than reddit in this regard, because you can actually see the ratio of upvotes to downvotes. So, even if your comment has a high score, you can still feel shitty knowing that X number of people downvoted it.
