In the original series we often saw Thing's arm when it turned the pages on Lurch's music. It wasn't depicted as being cut off at the wrist until the movie.
God I loved that show, kinda sad it got cancelled so early.
Maybe their original intention was for thing to just be a hand, but they just didn’t have the technology/budget for it.
Also in the original series which hand Thing was varied from scene to scene; sometimes he's a left hand, sometimes he's a right hand.
