Larian: Baldur's Gate 3 has almost sold twice as much as Divinity Original Sin 2 thus far (so around 15 million copies)

There's a massive overlap between DnD players and video game players too, and barely any video games that implement the DnD 5e ruleset. I'm willing to bet that helped a lot with their marketing: "DnD the video game" was very convincing.
