Android 15 may add an adaptive timeout option that automatically turns your device’s screen off when you aren’t using it

Correct, but it being adaptive is. I have my screen timeout set for 5 minutes. If it's adaptive, when I set my phone down it will recognize that I'm no longer using it and turn off the screen before it gets to 5 minutes.

But that's not new. Adaptive screen when at my ear or when I put it face down had been a thing for years.

I might be wrong, but when you put it face down or near your ear, it doesn't lock the device no?

This one would lock the device as if screen timed out.

Don't set it down to watch a video then.

That... would also be part of the adaptive suite. So instead of your phone turning the screen off after being "inactive" it would stay on
