Get an Ecobee or a Zigbee Thermostat and make Home Assistant manage it.

100%. I tried two different models of nest before I picked up an ecobee. So much better.

Looks just as sleek in its own way, interface UI is incredibly clean and responsive, super easy to adjust temperature, visible from across the room if you want. Like a smooth, sleek rounded phone screen that just works. Seems to be more accurate at keeping the temp and run the HVAC less than the nest. Can be intergrated into tons of smart hubs, while the nest has 0 interoperability.

Having working and good sensors for other rooms is a huge selling point too. Nest currently has a wonky, stupid version of the room sensor that would allow you to flip control of the HVAC based on preset and unchangeable times, 9am-4pm/etc. Times dont line up with your needs? Too bad. It also has no presence sensor at all, so if someone wasn't in that room at that time? All well, kicking on. Hopefully this one model makes it less shit, but ill beleive it when I see it.

Ecobee has Nest beat in almost all of its features. The only thing it can't take the win on is twisting it to change the temp. Thats it. It's better in every other way.

$329 for a thermostat? Yikes.

If you'rein the US I've been looking at the Honeywell T6 Pro which is the Pro model of the thermostat I already have and can apparently integrate with HA via ZWave and last I saw they were like $140.

Ehh, they go on sale for around $250 pretty often, and thats with an included room sensor.

I spent around the same for a much worse nest and its much worse sensor, so it worked for me.

Or even better get a non internet connected "dumb" thermostat

Each to their own. I like things like turning on the heating automatically when I'm in the shower
