Reddit requires premium for changing themes and even the browser theme seems to be ignored in favour of light mode. Imagine if kbin/lemmy did that for free?
Also Kbin does not ignore my darkmode settings.

Themes made by Reddit users… this company has got way too comfortable charging for user made content
Reddit is gonna die and I'm here for it!
Nah, it'll just shift in the NSFW direction... basically, 90% of the content will be porn, OF promotions, etc. The other 10% will be random meme subs and subs like rellationship_advice/dating_advice, hookup subs, personal ads, etc.
Basically, what FB is today, but with porn.
They will lose a lot of advertisers if they go all NSFW. That's exactly why Tumblr got rid of porn.
You seem to be ignoring the fact that reddit wants to go public and have been working toward an IPO. If all of their power users, mods, and advertisers leave, it could very easily ruin that IPO for them.
Even if the IPO is successful, I doubt spez will be in charge much longer. I imagine he knows this and is probably trying to maximize the value before he gets the boot so he can get that sweet sweet golden parachute.
This will not end well. I see a lot of folks who are of the opinion that reddit is "dead". It is not.
It's dying.. slowly, and painfully. This decline will go on for years. into the endgame of mostly automoderated, bot-driven content.
This seems to be pissbaby's strategy:
Piss off your most passionate users (those that contribute interesting content frequently), and they leave.
Piss off your most passionate mods, who worked tirelessly to remove links to meatspin and keep the conversation pseudo-human and topical. They leave - replaced by the WORST kind of leaders: powermods with an inferiority complex and no time to care about context.
Force those who remain to use a substandard app - inhibiting human interaction with the platform further.
All you're left with is content addicts, trolls, ads, dregs from the darkest corners, and bots that feed them.
???
Profit?
You'd have to be stupid if you leave the site like that with all those NSFW communities and OF promotions going around there. If this actually happens in the long run, they will shift directions, trust me. They're currently leaving those subs alone, but the volume of posts and comments submitted there every day is mindboggling. I have an account on reddit with only NSFW subs and followers. I tried hitting refresh every 5 seconds or so on my feed. I get 20, 30 posts, every 5 seconds!
As I said, only an idiot will pass on that oportunity. $5 a month for every account that wants to have an in app preview of their OF and you're golden. That's nothing compared to how much money some of these girls/women make. That's basically 1 guy's/gal's monthly subscription fee when on sale.
I'm betting on this scenario, cuz the others are not as profitable if reddit is left with shitposters and just content consumers.
Its been a long time coming. This is simply breaking the camels back.
Is this real/new? Premium for whats essentially some css?
It's real, and it has always been the case (at least since 2016). You could pay premium to customise the whole website' CSS to your liking. You can either use a pre-made style (there was a sub to share themes) or make your own.
Lol i’ve always used old.reddit and custom css trough RES. If i would have seen that i might have left even sooner. In many ways allowing custom styles IS an accessibility feature.
How do they stop people using a browser extension like DarkReader? Seems like a dumb thing to charge for.
This has been the case for ages on old Reddit...
