On adding moderators
So it's probably time to add some moderators, not necessarily because things are out of hand or anything, but because I'd like someone to actually nurture this community like I don't have time to. I'm talking about, for example, having regular pinned conversational live update threads, forming rules, all sorts of community building elements. On a lot of these it would probably be helpful to look at how the mod team over at r/Ukraine has handled things.
More specifically I'd really like to find someone Ukrainian who speaks the language to join the team, but that might be a bit much to ask at least in the short term.
Either way, consider this an invitation to apply if you think you'd be a good fit and you'd like to help nurture this community and help cleaning up spam and vile conduct. You'll need to message here in the thread since I believe Lemmy works in funny ways and you promote people through comments.
Please use identity verification. I’m worried some ruzzians will become mods.
On an offtopic personal note, it's the live update threads I miss the most.
I would like to be considered as a moderator
I can DM you my qualifications
My previous attempt at getting Reddit mods onboard was entirely ignored, but I suppose I'll try asking r/Ukraine. If I can get a senior mod from there active here then I'll defer further mod appointments to them. Otherwise I'll start picking.
I'd like to suggest some general rules.
Not sure yet how this (de)federations etc. works. But for example I checked lemmy. world and that guy use mastodon rules, which are kind of normal imo. I guess you could do something similar for the time being? until you'm find something better?
Just trying to help here, I have no personal interest in this stuff:.mastodon rules
I suppose others might offer similar or better alternatives?
I'm eyeballing this hoping it gets to levels of r/ukraine and r/ukraine_conflict
I've been supplementing that with https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/ That seems to help.
Agreed - those subs are one of the very few Reddit things I check anymore, largely because there’s not really a viable alternative that operates on a comparable scale.
I’m Ukrainian and that sub has been a huge source of support since the full-scale invasion started. It was a hard decision, but I quit reddit, and that community, cold-turkey. And you know what, I’ve been doing good so far. I’m excited to see what the communities on lemmy will become.
Wondered about that "Pravda" part (the name of a notoriously lying state magasine from the URSS/Russia) and also about the .com. being in the middle and not the end. It seems .ua means Ukraine so it should be an Ukrainian site at least. I mean maybe 'everyone' knows this website and I do not, if so apologies!
Any info gladly received!
And if course Slava Ukraine!!
Ukrainska Pravda was founded by Georgiy Gongadze who was murdered by the Ukrainian government in the year 2000 for digging into corruption. The website/news agency has retained their core beliefs in spreading truth. Musk wanted to buy their .Com domain a few years back to start his own Pravda, but they said no
I don't know much but i thought the same thing. I thought pravda was a lying propaganda rag. But like you, i saw the .ua. And I've been looking at it awhile alongside the old ukraine reddits. The posts are very similar in flavor.
The name of the newspaper translates to Ukrainian Truth and from what I was able to dig up seems to be a fairly reputable source, surprisingly. Here's a writeup on the Boston Globe website: Article
.com.ua is just the Ukranian version of .co.uk AFAIK. Not all countries allow you to register a second-level domain for their respective ccTLD, UK being a prime example.
If you are up to that (other views) maybe consider https://www.themoscowtimes.com/. Being more independent now.
Then again, this communitty is called Ukraine. And not Russian/Ukraine war or what ever. So I'm nor sure, what the mods want.
Another diferent source could be:https://meduza.io/en, but I'm less sure about this latter one.
I have been following the World News live threads religiously since mid-February 2022 and I’m really looking forward to something similar here in the Fediverse.
I don’t have a ton of modding experience but I did mod at r/Moscow for about a week in August 2022. A pro-Ukrainian Polish lad who used to live in Moscow forgot he was a mod there years ago. As it turned out, he was now the most senior mod so he banned all other mods and replaced them with pro-Ukrainian people, turning it into an anti-Putin sub. A subreddit coup, if you will. He said he aimed to use the sub as a way to lift the voices of all the Eastern Europe nations victimized by Russia over the years.
I flaired up to let the Muscovites know an American army vet was now a Moscow mod, permitting a flood of pro-UKR memes while removing pro-RU-invasion posts and comments. Russian jimmies were thoroughly rustled.
Reddit admins eventually received enough orc complaints to give the sub back to them. All good things must come to an end.
Anyway, despite my dearth of modding experience I’d like to help out as a mod. Cheers from Alaska.
From a US navy submariner: based army vet, 10/10. Thank you for your service.
Likewise!
I speak Ukrainian at a B1 level, happy to help translate stuff if I can
I'd love to see a daily thread here like r/worldnews has with live updates. The only reason I go back to reddit these days is for that activity in the daily thread. I'd love being able to inform people there about a daily thread here that they could also visit.
i speak Ukrainian (and, ugh, the moscovite too), i'll be happy to help, but i cannot promise a consistent and dedicated commitment.
Have you tried DMing any of the subreddit mods and seeing if any of them are interested in helping mod this /c/?
I might start a thread there or just send modmail. I did spare my Reddit account for this purpose afterall.
I don't speak Ukrainian, but I'm happy to help where I can.
