That is my biggest gripe with modern windows. The OS itself is pretty decent, but WHY am I paying at minimum $100 and seeing ads all over the start menu? Even with a vanilla MS sourced USB there are so many bloat apps. It didn't used to be that way.

I set up a PC for recording in a sound system and got a fresh install of Windows 11 on a custom PC and it was still super bloated with garbage games and a video editor that watermarks footage instead of the perfectly functional basic software they used to have.

I am in the process of repairing and setting up an old macbook with Linux since it stopped getting Apple updates. When I get a new laptop I will likely go with Linux there as well.

Yeah that's what I'm talking about.

I have habits that I don't have to think about and then one day they're just gone and I have to start over. Usually it happens by having a sudden realization that the thing I did for months without thinking about it has not been done for several weeks. Then to rebuild that habit I have to start over again.

Similar situation here. I was raised home schooled for all of my education. Got a GED, good score on the ACT, got a 4.0 in the community college where I got an associates degree. The problem is parents who homeschool because they don't want their kids to turn "woke" or be "converted" by exposure to the fact that non-straight, non-cis people exist. A lot of the time, the emphasis is only on indoctrination, and there is little or no actual education involved.

I have been to homeschool conferences - there are some good resources there, and a LOT of really pretty awful stuff like this article mentioned. People like the author are so incredibly impactful, even if they don't realize it. They may never see results but those seeds matter. Even if the parents don't get it, the kids will.

At a conference last year, there was a speaker talking about parenting difficult children (Kirk Martin with Celebrate Calm). He was presenting very much a solid gentle parenting approach (though he didn't call it that) that is very contrary to the culture of a lot of homeschool groups. He spent a lot of time unpacking his experiences as someone who grew up with really strict physical discipline, the impact it had on him, his experience being a parent - kind of leading people on a journey from where they might be to where they should be as parents.

He also spent a bit of his talk on how the Bible doesn't teach us to raise our kids to fight in a culture war and just really pretty clearly calling out a lot of the toxic far right christian-nationalist talking points. Sure he made a lot of people uncomfortable, but those thoughts will stick with them.

After his talk he was spent over an hour talking with people outside of the conference room answering questions. His next talk was packed as well.

Anyway, all that to say - I know it can take a lot out of someone to deal with people in those environments, but it is absolutely impactful and so desperately needed.

It's not really the time. It's more about the mental effort it takes to find out what to switch to.

Sure, it's easy to install Firefox or sign up for Lemmy once you know that it's there, but most people just have a sense that things suck with no idea of what they can do to fix it.

Finding out what to do to have a better experience takes a non-trivial amount of mental energy that scrolling reddit and instagram do not require.

The constant hustle, multiple jobs, or jobs with a high mental load, rising prices and stagnant wages all work together to create a lot of decision fatigue and stress. It often takes something major to get people out of that and get them active at changing things.

I loved reading through the manual for Morrowind with the copy we got on the original XBox. I read all the class descriptions, details about the schools of magic, and had a whole character planned out before starting the game. I didn't get into tabletop gaming until much later, but looking back, that manual really captured the same feeling of reading through the D&D players handbook and picking out a race, class, background, etc.

I think that feeling is why it's still my favorite PC game.

No, it's not excuses, it's just reality. It's hard. Does that mean people shouldn't try to do better and make things better? Of course not. Being better and doing better is hard, and we should do it anyway. That kind of personal growth is central to the human experience, or it ought to be.

The thing is, just because people aren't doing better in the area that you understand and care about doesn't mean that they aren't in other areas that you may not know about.

For example, someone who is stressed out and overburdened with work may be using all of their available energy to be a better parent and make sure that their child is raised in a healthy and emotionally stable home. If that doesn't leave room for people to support FOSS and privacy friendly browsers that's ok.

Just be the best human you can be every day and don't beat yourself (or others) up for not being perfect.

A lot of tea for me, especially earthy flavors. Shou Puerh tea is like a magical grounding experience for me every time I drink it. I love coffee and drink that daily, but when I really need to just be I break into the puerh stash.

For evenings I like a lot of herbal teas. Rooibos is probably my favorite. Lately I have been drinking a lot of lemon ginger tea with a splash of apple cider vinegar before bed.

This is something that has always interested me but I've never tried. Any recommendations on a set of picks to start with?

But loose leaf tea is much better quality anyway and avoids the issue of what's in the bag entirely. They also have ceramic filters so you can completely avoid having plastic in contact with hot water

I got a friend with that in Destiny 2 just a couple years ago. I guess when you've been playing for hours and you ask how to take a screenshot, you don't put 2 and 2 together quick enough

You download them directly from thr Humble bundle website. They appear to be DRM free.

They are all available in PDF but only some are available in all formats, and the rest are either only PDF and MOBI or PDF and ePUB, if that matters to you

It honestly changed my life when I started meeting with friends at specific times each week to lift weights. Having it be an actual appointment that would affect others if I didn't show up made all the difference. I was super excited to be there and never missed a day.

Then their schedules changed and they are no longer available when I am. I still like working out... but it's so hard to make myself do it and I am super inconsistent now. It depresses me to think about it

This is very true. It can be hard to get started but it makes a huge impact

"What project?" I say, as I start a third project after getting bored with the second project and completely forgetting that the first project ever existed.

I love connect. I used sync for a bit and it's great too but I fully switched to connect now

Audiobooks are fantastic for me while riding a bike or walking on a treadmill - something to physically do and something to mentally do.

I can't just sit and listen to them though.

EDIT: Oh and repetitive tasks - I got back into audiobooks when I started making chainmail again. Which reminds me... I haven't finished that thing I started a year ago...

WRONG!

I write the tasks in my little notebook and then I don't have to think about it until later.

DISCLAIMER: This only works if you actually review the notebook periodically, as I have recently discovered.

I'm not even kidding - I started doing the bullet journal method (this video) recently and it is not an understatement to say it changed my life. I'm just talking the basic method in the video - I always thought bullet journaling was all of the pretty spreads and fancy lettering but that's not at all what it is about. It was developed by a guy with ADHD to help himself manage his own brain in school and work.

Knowing that if I write something down I have a process to evaluate it later means I really can stop stressing about it. And then at the end of the day / week / month I can look over the tasks, evaluate if they are actually important, and put them where they need to go.

Knowing that I have those periods of reflection each week / month to migrate and organize tasks means I don't stress about a super long list of tasks either. Before I always felt like I had to do a task ASAP or else I would forget it and it wouldn't get done for months (if ever). Now I just don't worry about that.

It has helped me also a LOT with planning a reasonable amount of things to do for the day. Yes, these 10 things NEED to be done, but they don't NEED to be done TODAY - I'll put them in my weekly or monthly when I am reviewing unfinished tasks for the day. Then when I start a new day, I will review the weekly, monthly, and previous day and pick a couple unfinished things that are important and put them on my daily list.

Having that structure and writing things multiple times also helps me with executive function. It makes everything seem much more achievable.

TL;DR - Bullet Journal Method was made by an ADHD brain, and I recommend it. 10/10. Just watch this short video and also maybe check out some of the other videos and podcast that Ryder Carroll has done

I have issues with FireFox running YouTube on windows 10 - it gets super laggy - the issue is nonexistent if I used the Piped frontend. I think it depends a lot on what website you are using - some don't play well with FireFox.

That being said, I did not have issues with FireFox on Mac when I used that, or on Linux, though I don't use my Linux laptop a lot for web heavy stuff

Yeah it's a mental illness. ADHD sucks and makes so many things hard.

Doesn't mean we aren't smart, or capable, but it is definitely limiting in a lot of ways.

Yeah I've never had a missing driver problem with a windows install since maybe windows 7. I even moved a hard drive with a windows 8 install from an Asus laptop with an Intel cpu to a custom build desktop with a ryzen cpu without having to change any drivers. I did have to reactivate windows because of the hardware change but that's it.

The included drivers are often providing less performance than updated ones from the vendor though, so it is recommended to download those in some cases, specifically nvidia. But most gaming laptops will have a vendor provided update center to manage all of that for you.

I like Linux over windows for a lot of reasons but this post is a bit silly.

I need to get more. It is legit. I don't know how the quality of the supermarket stuff but I had some from a local farmers market and it was awesome. The guy grows all the mushrooms himself and sells them fresh and dried and the extracts. He also sells the stuff to grow your own. But the fresh stuff he had was really helpful to me before I knew I had ADHD. I just thought I had brainfog but that stuff really helped with focus for me.

I'm on meds now that help too but I'd like to get some more lions main as well

Thank you for the help @infeeeee@lemm.ee @BaumGeist@lemmy.ml - I believe the issue with the audio is hardware related. I reinstalled Mac OSX using the built in recovery tool and that does not detect the sound card either. So sometime in between it being used last and me installing Ubuntu on it the hardware failed. I don't think I will bother replacing the logic board as it is a 10 year old laptop and is otherwise working just fine.

Regardless, it's good to be using Linux again!

Are you talking about the adapters that let you run network through your electrical circuits? Because that's different from PoE. PoE is running power through the network cables so you get power and network with one plug, so kind of the opposite of that.

I can confirm that using electrical infrastructure for network is really not great.

Draw is great, and I've been able to use it for most of what I used Acrobat for before, but it has issues with converting certain documents, especially when they have special fonts. Also there's the issue of not being able to just fill out some fields and then share it back as a PDF

Debian on a base model 2013 MacBook air checking in. Runs better than it ever did on Mac OS. Battery life is still fine. I did have to use proprietary drivers for some things (wifi and webcam) but other than that it was pretty much plug and play.

Lots of replacement parts are on ebay for cheap, and there are a lot of repair tutorials on YouTube (and piped.video) I replaced keyboard and trackpad cheaply, and some of the internal cables.

As far as drawbacks, if you have to replace the storage or or logic board, those are expensive. I have a sound issue which I haven't been able to fix and from searching around it looks like a logic board would be required. Bluetooth headphones work fine though so I'm just dealing with it.

Ahh, the maps were so good. I remember using the extremely detailed hand drawn map to help me locate the Cavern of the Incarnate, and other cool locations. I am sad that I didn't keep them.

I will definitely mention that if I continue to have this issue or have other issues. I have a follow up in about a month. The Focalin XR is supposed to be extended release too - for me it seems to last around 8 hours or so which is about what I want because the main concern I have is with work. Outside of work I can structure my life to be pretty ADHD friendly

Personally, I like to tinker with stuff - nothing that requires a ton of concentration, but just taking stuff apart and putting it back together.

If I have an audiobook, listening to that while doing a repetitive task is really relaxing as well. Things like knitting or crochet seem really good for this - I don't do either of those but I have other little crafting type things that I do.

I also like to re-watch old startrek episodes while scrolling lemmy but that feels less relaxing.

I used to do videogames a lot and that was fun but also less relaxing then the other things.

Pretty much every day. I think it's because we have a limited capacity and for many of us our job requires us to mask to some degree and it just takes all of our energy, even if it isn't physically or even intellectually demanding. There's no reason I should feel completely drained and demotivated by just sending emails, but it is what it is.

I try to go somewhere quiet and lay on the floor or something. Or literally touch grass - get feet in the dirt, listen to the wind in the trees, that sort of thing. And stay away from screens for a bit. I'm still trying to find ways to help regulate my nervous system since I need different things on different days but those are some of the most effective for me.
