Cashew nuts are the best nut

IRC was so much better than Discord. People are stupid.

Capitalism is starting to feel like a massive piss-take. You've got corps laughing all the way to the bank with billions in profits feeding their employees with fucking potatoes.

Surely something has to give?

Probably the first pun I've laughed at in 40yrs.

Barrelling out of a club, mid comedown as the sun is coming up and seeing all the bright and cheery people on a Sunday morning going to church or wherever. You're dressed in flourescent clubbing gear caked in grime and sweat from 8hrs of dancing.

This picture is VERY accurate.

The comments by septics on Biden's age reek of ageism.

His age is irrelevant. Can he do the fucking job?

Yes?

Then vote for him.

The poor bastard is destroying his retirement, health and twilight years to stop the US falling to fascism and all you can do is whine about his age?

banter

It won't work. I regularly post banter, irony, sarcasm. But it just gets taken too seriously. People accuse me of having an agenda or seriously believing some of the utterly outlandish things I say.

I'll sa stupid shit like "the Java programming language causes cancer" and people will think I'm fucking SERIOUS?!

The other day I said the VERY obviously unserious: "Only bourgeois homosexuals and gentrified lesbians use Wayland".

Bear in mind I'm gay and my that user account has a rainbow flag in it!

One lesbian found it funny and responded. It was mostly downvoted and it lasted 4hrs before getting deleted and my account banned.

I regularly make comments that are blindingly obvious sarcasm - they use utterly ridiculous sentences like the above about "gentrified lesbians".

Everyone takes them seriously. There's absolutely NO fucking humour allowed unless it follows a VERY stale Reddit-esque meme format that people are used to.

When someone said they tried meth once and hated it I replied "Skill issue".

I was battered by downvotes.

Another example: I puffed on a strong vape for the first time one morning and made a WHIMSICAL post of: "WOW! How is nicotine legal!?" - cos it almost knocked me the fuck out. I wasn't serious!

Dog-piled by people saying - "Yeah well alcohol is legal!" or "What's your endgame here? What's the agenda?!". Or "If this is bait, then you’re pretending to be an idiot. If not, you’re an actual idiot."

What's with assuming the fucking worst of everyone's posts?! What happened to "que sera sera"?

"Yes I’m bragging about fucking my body you well-oiled grape." - -9 downvotes.

"WELL OILED GRAPE!!!" Oh of course I must have absolutely meant that fuckign classic burn. I don't even WTF it would mean if taken seriously.

"But if I dropped you in the Pacific ocean you wouldn’t live long." to a "Hydro Homie" espousing the virtues of water. -8 downvotes (fucking sarcasm!)

"The weight of my intellect is a heavy burden to bear." - Obvious fucking sarcasm -8 downvotes

"Java devs are the reason humanity will never have FTL drives." - -3 downvotes. Java devs really have NO sense of fucking humour.

I refuse on principal to add the brain-dead "/s" bollocks for obvious sarcasm. It's not my problem the world is wet lipped and loose knickered.

The entire fediverse is filled with humourless, miserable, cynical wishy-washy cunts who dont' spot sarcasm irony or anything unless it's written in BIG FUCKING CAPITALS.

THIS IS A FUNNY - DONT TAKE SERIOUSLY

Pretty common for the government to ignore the drug advisory council.

Funnily enough I know how this would feel! I gave myself a very bad black eye during a K-hole which burst a vein above my eye causing my eye lid to swell.

It felt like having a very hot and 'sweaty' eye ball covered by a winter duvet. It was so uncomfortably hot I actually got a mini fan to blow air into my eye while I held up the swelling.

Thankfully it resolved itself but thick eye lids are not good.

I was 'voluntarily' comitted to a psych hospital (UK) about 6yrs ago. I was a recovering heroin addict with a daily pickup prescription of bupronorphine at the time. It took 3 days of begging nurses to fetch/check my prescription requirements before they arrived. By the time they did I was crawling to the fucking medical room to take my tablet.

The nurse exclaimed: "Oh WOW! I've never seen someone change so quickly!"

It got worse...I was comitted to a hospital in a neighbouring NHS Trust rather than my local one due to bed limitations. This meant two things:

  1. My psychiatrist was on annual leave and couldn't come to see me in the legally established 2 day maximum wait.
  2. No other psychiatrist in that Trust could evaluate me as I was an outside patient.

This meant I was trapped for 7 days when in reality I should have only had to spend 2 days maximum. After 7 days another problem was manifesting. My severe addiction to pregabalin. As the pregabalin in my system wore off I began to experience hallucinations and delusions. So the hospital stay was making me more insane. My bed was a hard wooden block with a faux-leather mattress and sheets on top. It started to melt and hands would grab and punch at me. I paced the corridors listening to the voices of people who didn't exist.

I tried explaining all this to the nurses but as anyone who's been to a mental hospital knows they take anything you say with a pinch of salt. So they ignored my deterioration and doctors still refused to even see me.

On the 7th day the delusions and psychosis were so bad I was taking instructions from 'Wall People' who told me the 'Magic Formula to Escape' was to speak to the "Queen Nurse" and ask to be "released against medical advice".

When I uttered those words a magical thing happened - a doctor appeared with a sheet of paper. He asked some questions, never once giving me eye contact, and filled in his form. All the time this was happening I was seeing wall people trying to bust through the wall to grab me while I 'heard' other patients baying for my blood in the corridor outside.

The form complete I was let out of the front door and given my wallet and keys.

The bus then train home was a nightmare-fuelled Mad Max-like journey with people attacking me and shouting at me. When I got home I immediately ducked into my car and grabbed my pregabalin. Ate a bunch and 20mins later - swoosh - I was sane.

It was the hardest, most horrific shit I've ever gone through and scars me to this day. I'm clean now but I've always told doctors and psychiatrists that if I'm suicidal I'd never tell them because I'd sooner die than be hospitalised. Then they utter the usual phrase "are you a risk to yourself or anyone else". Knowing full well I'm suicidal I say "No, absolutely not".

Rather than trying to find a specific community to ask a question. Ask it in a general community. Specific subreddits were only born when generic ones became too big. But as the generic ones are much smaller it makes more sense to ask your questions and make posts there.

Doxxing is bad. I don't care if the person is a murderer or a protestor. Doxxing can have many, very nasty unintended consequences that can hurt more than just the person being doxxed.

They wanted to build one in London. We told them to fuck off.

I'm a programmer and I find dealing with other programmers frustrating and pointless if you discuss anything that's not programming related.

They'll happily discuss algorithms or language paradigms for hours but if you mention design, UI/X, marketing, etc they shut you down claiming some greater-technical reason for the feature.

Lemmy is a good, recent example. As part of being a web dev I've also done a lot of SEM. The devs have a Github issue for making readable URLs. They completely refused to consider it claiming other technical requirements for not allowing it. Any arguments outside the narrow technical reasons are discounted. So what if readable URLs will help people find the site through Google easier (because Google will better index the site). It breaks X feature and we don't see a need. No discussion and no listening.

If devs don't see a strict technical need for something they ignore it at best and at worst they insult you for being an idiot.

Hubris and ignorance make it a PITA to deal with them.

I never expected UCAS to turn up on here. I thought Lemmy was for middle aged Linux users?

There's health benefits to removing the appendix and tonsils too - so why isn't it done wholesale on every kid born?

Because it's fucking barbaric chopping bits of you up without necessity.

On top of that as science has progressed - guess what? They think both the tonsils and appendix have a purpose. They're important for immunity.

But there was never a fucking doubt that the foreskin has a purpose in human beings. So the removal of it for "health benefits" really is scraping the fucking barrel.

To add:

Someone posted in a UK sub asking if a "Good News UK" community would be good.

I commented something like: "It'd make sense to set up and leave it empty while bloicking any submissions cos there's bugger all good news about this country"

4 DAY BAN but not just from the Good News UK community - from every other community they moderated including the Nature one which pissed me off most of all cos I fucking love British nature!

Hedgehogs are my fave animal and I've nurtered some back to health. I love tits and especially the crested tit.

Heaven forbid anyone leave a wry comment! Christ you'll get banned from fucking everything.

So no, banter is dead. Humour is dead unless it follows a brain-dead Reddit meme everyone understands.

Reading the article it sounded more like he was tired of dealing with people who hated on the platform - like you.

They had moderators working full time and numerous protections in place (including AI that detected nudity). They actually led to the arrest of many paedophiles and had numoerous contacts with international law enforcement and child protection agencies.

If you read the article you'd see he was more ruined by the people screeching it needs to be shut down because it was a nest of paedos. People who'd probably never fucking used the site (like you) who'd just heard rumours (like you) and had no fucking clue about the moderation and arrests that went on in the background.

Guess what - paedos will always fucking exist. If anything Omegle was a honeypot for the stupid few who thought they could use it and get away with it only to find out they couldn't and got arrested.

Instead now paedos will go elsewhere. More underground. Harder to find. Harder to catch.

Congratulations. You're ignorant pearl clutching is precisely what the site admin couldn't deal with anymore and you've made paedos harder to catch in the act.

I hope you're proud.

I stick to the original "Reddiquette" which I wish more people stuck to or even fucking READ for a start.

Downvotes were meant for off-topic and spam nonsense. They were NEVER meant for disagreement. If you disagreed with someone you were encouraged to comment in response. It fostered a much better and interesting community with people of differeing views not afraid to voice their dissent.

You would literally get right and left-wingers having heated but civil debates with each other and neither would be getting heavily downvoted. Can you imagine that happening on Reddit nowadays?

When Diggers and the general populace jumped on Reddit downvotes just turned into a spiteful and underhanded way of saying "Fuck your opinion and I don't feel like justifying it".

This resulted in echo chambers where people were too afraid to voice their true opinions cos they'd get downvoted and at worst banned from the subreddit by over-zealous mods who'd forgotten what downvotes were for.

I have a personal theory that this accelerated the polarisation of politics across the English-speaking world. Maybe if Republicans* didn't get so heavily downvoted they wouldn't have turned to places like The_Donald and 8chan to vent in like-minded echo chambers. They could discuss things without getting villified and have their views challenged in a civil manner.

*NB. Shouldn't matter but to be clear I'm a left wing Brit. I'm just using Donald Trump/Democrats as a will known divisive issue.

I LOVE Lemmy because it has the oldschool Reddit vibe where people will disagree and neither person is downvoting the other. They just have civil discussion. Much better!!

Personally I NEVER downvote unless it's utterly meaningless, pointless or just downright spam. I recently added one more trigger for me to downvote though: Low effort bullshit like "This" or puns that add ntohing to the conversation except to garner upvotes for their 'comedic' value.
