ISPs in the US are notorious for getting public funds for services that they never provide, so I wouldn't be too concerned about that.

I honestly do not see what you're upset about, both search engines look like they did well here.

Because the ux for signal is superior and I don't care about anonymity when I'm communicating with friends and family.

The right tool for the right job, and signal is the right tool for general communication, but I wouldn't use it for my virtual pals.

Essentially, I see entirely different use cases for decentralized options like matrix, session, xmpp.

Mint is my go to herbal tea. Aside from being a great late night tea, it grows like a weed in many places and so you can make your own rather easily!

I almost did but every now and then they have something good, so I kept it... For now

Even if these servers federate with exploding heads, the individual servers would still moderate content coming from exploding heads users on their servers, no? I agree that there are clearly a lot of shitty users there, but I have not seen a strong argument from you on how federating with them is a problem. Their content here is actively moderated.

I could very well be wrong, in which case I will eat my words, but it seems like a bit of an over reaction to me.

Just took a quick browse of their instance, eww...

I find it interesting that the relabeling of CP to CSAM weakens their argument here. "CP generated by AI is still CP" makes sense, but if there's no abusee, it's just CSM. Makes me wonder if they would have not rebranded if they knew about the proliferation of AI pornography.

Because coffee beans have a flat side, this method will produce an uneven roast. The way I was taught was to use a pan and to stir consistently. You'll still end up with a non-uniform roast, but it should be a bit better then oven roasted.

Cast iron works well because of heat retention and radiative sides. Plus they work great on a grill so all the smoke and chaff stays outside. (My wife doesn't let me roast inside anymore)

But at the end of the day it's not too important how you roast them, just that you are home roasting and enjoying your morning brew.

Go with signal, it's the right tool for your job. Matrix has its merits, but is less intuitive, less streamlined, and less polished then signal. For many use case these wouldn't matter, but for you they do.

Signal is so easy, my grandparents are on it. They can't attach a file on an email, but they can use signal.

Sounds like you're anxious, which will lead to a stressful experience no matter where you're seated. Airports tend to be large, crowded, confusing, and loud, with people constantly rushing around.

The best way to improve your travel experience is to find techniques that help relax you as much as possible.

If it's a short haul flight, save yourself some hassle and put the seat selection out of your mind. You can use the time you would be worrying about and changing your seat to improve on ways you self-calm in stressful environments.

If the flight is more than a couple of hours, I'd recommend switching to a window or aisle. The benefit of the aisle seat is you can occasionally stretch your legs in the aisle, and more importantly, you can leave your seat unimpeded. The window gives you something to lean on, as well as cool views, particularly during takeoff and landing. If you're a nervous flyer that might be a negative.

I find it helpful to remember that just because everyone else is in a rush, you don't have to be. You don't have to run to your terminal, you don't have to rush to the front of the boarding line. You don't need to be the first on or off the plane. You can get to the airport a tad early, to give yourself time to walk slowly and rest as you need it.

There's ample staff at just about every airport, if you don't know where to go or what to do, ask them. Same is true on the plane itself, the flight crew is available to assist you.

Enjoy your trip!

But paper beats rock

Very difficult, it's one of those "it's a feature not a bug" things.

By design, our current LLMs hallucinate everything. The secret sauce these big companies add is getting them to hallucinate correct information.

When the models get it right, it's intelligence, when they get it wrong, it's a hallucination.

In order to fix the problem, someone needs to discover an entirely new architecture, which is entirely conceivable, but the timing is unpredictable, as it requires a fundamentally different approach.

I don't actually know how it works so I'll just assert my understanding and if I'm wrong hopefully someone knowledgeable shows up and teaches us both something.

From what I understand, in your described setup, only sh.itjustworks keeps track of the votes on "awesomecommunity". Other instances, e.g. lemmy.world, get the count from the community's home server. Other instances send their votes and comments to the home server, which is responsible for keeping track of everything.

I'm confident at least 20% of that is accurate, give or take 25%.

I know nothing about law, but if Twitter took Facebook to court, wouldn't they have to reveal the trade secrets they allege were stolen, no longer making them secret? Or is revealing then in court perceived as an open secret?

How do you find it? Do you manage the scary spikes?

It's certainly a great read and is worthwhile, however I fundamentally disagree with the base premise that the goal of a federated system is to be uniformly distributed.

Why should an instance focused on a niche topic have the same representation as a general instance? Why should either have the same representation as one with abhorrent content?

Choosing your instance is effectively a statement that you agree with the mission of the particular instance. The number of low user instances demonstrates that there are a great number of people that share the author's vision of federation.

"elections"

That actually sounds about right, it's aligned with what my racist family says!
