The metaverse died because it didn't mean anything, there was no clear thing you could point to and say "this is the metaverse". It was a collection of buzzwords designed to sell a dream to investors and nothing more.

If the service is free you are the product. That's why I pay my girlfriend

Is this not a privacy win though? Isn't this what people want?

No

People who say EVs do nothing just want to complain for the sake of complaining a lot of the time. EVs aren't ideal, but they are better and more crucially they shift the consumer thinking away from ICE cars and towards alternatives.

I've been saying for ages that podcasts are the last mainstream bastion of what the Internet is supposed to be. Imagine if it was the same for film and tv?

If there was a foolproof way of checking for a pirated copy they wouldn't be making a game engine they'd be making DRM

Why would it have fanfare? It's the same thing they've done for every generation

Simpsons hit and run

I find it absolutely mind blowing that people are generally accepting that as okay on most social media platforms.

We had this once with a guy working remotely who decided to move to Poland without telling anyone, which was not allowed in the terms of his contract nor did he have a visa to live in Poland. Only person I've ever heard of getting deported from Poland to the UK

  • it's expensive to run, openAI is subsidising it heavily and it will come back to bite us in the ass soon
  • it can be both intentionally and unintentionally biased
  • the text it generates has a certain style to it that can be easy to pick up on
  • it can mix made up information with real information
  • it's a black box

Those are the kinds of bugs that keep programmers awake at night

When are they going to fine Microsoft for the blatant anti competitive Edge pushing inside Windows? 20 years ago it was a scandal just to bundle Internet Explorer and now they get away with progressively making it harder to switch away from Edge, forcing links to open in Edge rather than your default browser and injecting ads into your browser and OS when you try to download an alternative.

That's because they still think it's a good idea, they just thought that they could get away with it

Evidence for: new WiFi chip
Evidence against: valve literally said they weren't going to do it

When I was rooting/flashing custom ROMs I was spending a lot of time tinkering or debugging issues. I could deal with forgoing bank apps, Netflix, etc but I stopped in the end after cyanogenmod had an issue that meant emergency calls would soft reboot the phone. It made me realise my phone was an appliance not a hobby, I need to be able to rely on it and not be wondering if something won't work because of the ROM I have installed or because it's rooted.

The issue with that argument is... Why? He is a business man, activism generally doesn't effect him, tesla cars are generally liked by left leaning middle class, why would he spend so much money to destroy something?

I don't think that's what happened to the author. Cloudflare generally doesn't leave you on that page if it detects a suspicious browser. Plus, how is cloudflare supposed to use your corporate VPN and your certificate to verify your identity? They don't have an omnipotent view of all corporate VPNs that exist. The check that cloudflare does on that page is pretty javascript heavy and I assume it was just temporarily broken in Firefox. Which is an issue in itsself, but it's not the massive deal that the author makes out.

I don't think so. People still have a need for interaction with a real human and infinite generated content just feels hollow. Sure, it'll satisfy some people and maybe that's a good thing but I don't think it's going to replace or even barely supplement real social interaction
