Let's just say they were probably willing to deal with the consequences, and that either way they were going to get out of the war.
Someone on an EOD team once shared with me a very interesting point of view when it comes to anything dealing with explosives. They asked dude if it ever makes him nervous and he said "No, because the thing about dealing with explosives is either you're right, or it's not your problem anymore."
Not really true here since ingesting C4 could very well make you extremely ill and in pain for days.
I mean, for at least some of them that's the stated objective
