I remember things being very hostile toward gays (trans, etc., didn't really get a mention other than for comedy) at the height of the fear over AIDS. I think the boot lifted a bit from their neck during the 70s, a whole lot of people seemed to view the 80s as their comeuppance for daring to be who they are...
