That's the thing with abusers in general - they are manipulators, and that applies not only to their victim, but to everyone in their life. Sure, many lack the control and let the mask slip (with or without the help of any substances like drugs or alcohol), but many more are able to keep everyone around them completely oblivious to how sinister they actually are. I would say with few exceptions, almost anyone in your life could turn out to be doing some really terrible stuff.
E: there is also a specific side to that that this story touches on and that's ableism, and how abusers often take on the role of carer (and/or martyr, if they didn't have a choice) because that not only gives them access to a vulnerable person, it also gives them the halo of a "good person" that shields them from a lot.
He died because he had a gun fetish. When the FBI came he couldn't resist a shootout. It cost him his sorry life. And the FBI acquired his big gun collection. One less voter for Convicted Sex Offender Treason Trump.
