I took the textures from Halo Combat Evolved and imported them into blender and enable r(ule)tracing

the deepbump addon has a button to convert normal maps to depth maps, would help with the parallax

oh nice, yeah the original textures are just bump maps, I plugged them into the normal map node and it looked good enough so I just went with it, but I've heard about how bump maps =/= normal maps and it can cause problems, so that might be a nice addon for this kind of stuff

It kinda hurts to look at, and is kinda beautifully ominous at the same time

Yeah Halo CE comes from the wonderful era where bump mapping was new and a free way to add detail without adding polys, has a beautiful technical aesthetic, kinda like Half-Life 2
