A geologist and archaeologist by training, a nerd by inclination - books, films, fossils, comics, rocks, games, folklore, and, generally, the rum and uncanny... Let's have it!

That'll be partly down to the communist and transgender coders who helped lay the foundations for this place.

Election law expert Richard Hasen wrote that there is "no credence" to the notion that the Democratic Party could not legally replace Biden on the ticket, as he is not the nominee yet -- the nominating process generally takes place during the Democratic National Convention.

"Joe Biden is not the party's nominee now, and states generally point to the major party's nominee as the one whose name is on the ballot," he wrote in a piece earlier this month.

I think I'll believe the expert.

This seems to be sleazy conmen faking interactions with women to convince wannabe pick-up artists to pay for their app. It's like some new circle of Hell.

No one IRL knows I help run a Lemmy instance and I plan on keeping it that way for now as it's going to take too much explaining.

Having been to a lot of Palaeolithic sites and studied cave formation and the like...

They usually used just the cave mouths or even rock shelters. Caves "breath" and if they "breath" in then the environment in a cave mouth can be dry and sheltered from the rain. You'll also find that the most frequently used caves are either higher up the side of a hill providing good views over the area to help hunt game and/or they're close to a spring.

They did venture deeper into caves but usually for ritual purposes and those that were decorated for these purposes seem to have been chosen for relative ease of access (you just need a torch and a good guide) but also because the journey itself to the ritual site was part of the ritual (we can only speculate but it may be part of a rebirth ritual and/or the effect would have been enhanced by drugs, music, etc).

Musk faces major challenges to get there, though. Convincing people why they need such a platform is one. Getting them to trust X with their entire financial life is another.

It's less about trusting X but trusting Musk. Trying to make an "everything app" with him in charge just feels dystopian.

The thing is, the Fediverse, link the original concept of the Internet is flexible and can survive losing nodes - it just routes around and issue. If there are problems it can mutate and survive.

I’m not sure if there’s a solution here, but I’d like to urge people to avoid lemmy.ml hosted communities in favor of communities on more reasonable instances.

This is the best solution - the answers are in our hands. Communities only thrive because the users are.posting and interacting on it. If the Mod goes inactive or an instances goes down, we can switch to a new community. That then gains the momentum and goes on to thrive. It's survival of the fittest and why having more than one community on a topic (especially big topics) is a feature not a bug because it gives the network flexibility and resilience.

So if there's an issue with lemmy.ml, boycott it - unsubscribe, give the other communities on more agreeable instances your time and they will grow and prosper. If there isn't a relevant alternative start one.

Lemmy prevails.

They are developing their own extremist-infused AI models, and are already experimenting with novel ways to leverage the technology, including producing blueprints for 3D weapons and recipes for making bombs.

Given thr way AI is prone to hallucinations, they should definitely have a go at building them. Might solve our problems for us.

Going with my father to figure out how we would clean up the bathroom my grandfather attempted suicide in as I didn't think it was something he should do on his own (it was my maternal grandfather but still...). I was right. It made every horror movie look tame. However, it was so terrible that there wasn't much we could do other than phone crime scene cleanup and stay out of their way while they earned every single penny of their fee.

Definitely, a faux pas. A correct answer would be: "try it, film it, share it."

And that's me done with Disney+ - big price hikes and the removal of password sharing have killed the value in it.

Plus, I have such a massive backlog of things to watch, I wouldn't even notice.

Well it was going to get ActivityPub integration, so something was happening on that front.

Of course, if they don't want it they could make it open source and let people start their own instances but that's not going to happen while there's data to mine.

I've double-checked your findings and they are valid.

Ban This Book Too

In short, is there something I’m missing here, or is work-eat-sleep-repeat all there is until I retire?

You might die before then. I definitely saw "bottlenecks" in my mid-20s and late-40s where friends dropped like flies and some never got back up again.

Anyway, it sounds like you are having a crisis - people talk about the mid-life crisis but they can happen at any age but often a turning point:

  • Late teens - wait! I have to grow up and get serious?
  • End of Uni - wait! I have to get a job and all that other adult nonsense?
  • 30 - wait! I should really be married and having kids by now.
  • 40 - wait! My biological clock is ticking, I haven't been promoted like I thought I would and my body is starting to creak.
  • 50 - well that didn't turn out how I wanted but there's still time.
  • 60 - where did my life go? Ah well, retirement is looming, I can't wait for all that free time.
  • 70 - death is looming, where did all that free time go?

Unfortunately, the meaning of life is what you make of it, so start managing your expectations.and don't measure your happiness against other people's - they're probably less happy than they appear.

I can't claim to have any clear answers but find.out what you love doing and build your life around doing more of that. Don't let your worklife eat into your personal time. Stop caring what people think about you, but that's not a license to be a dick. Make the world a better place for having you in it. If you need help, ask. Eat well, don't smoke, drink in moderation and wear sunblock - these things will help your later life be more worthwhile.

That's hot linking and is frowned upon to the point that some sites will block it. You might be seeing the cached version you post over here but everyone else gets a broken image.

Far better to use a hosting services. You could use Pixelfed but it could get a bit messy and it is designed as an Instagram replacement. You've be better off using a dedicated image host:

  • Lensdump.is my general image host that I use for all sorts of bits and bobs.
  • Catbox hosts images and videos - I use it for the latter.

Seems like a waste of time and erodes the trust people have in other stories. I've seen plenty where half the OP's replies are trying to convince people they are genuine.

It's not really been a big thing here until the American influence has sparked interest.

When you can go and watch the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, tar barrelling or the Haxey Hood, there's less interest in Medieval cosplay.

I doubt there are truly any. Even on the free speech advocating instances, I imagine if you started posting terrorist threats and/or scat porn you'd quickly find their limits on free speech (bonus points for combining the two in one post).

If you just want to say nasty things about minorities (which these kinds of posts are often code for) or hype some crypto scam then there are instances for that.

This piece from The Atlantic goes into the detail of it.

It's an incredibly dangerous lie to be spreading but the tweet wouldn't make sense unless you knew the broader context (the Great Replacement conspiracy theory), which Musk clearly does or he wouldn't have gone out of his way to reply. He has tried to row back on it since but just made his take on this more blatant.
