Not really an incident but I am amazed at how many groups of senior tech managers and engineers navigate from organization to organization together!

For example, a tech VP joins a new company and within a year many of the senior positions are occupied by the VP’s previous coworkers. They give each other promotions and eventually either get outmaneuvered by another similar group of people or simply choose to move on to the next place to do it all over again.

I had no idea such groups existed, until I was invited into one. Now that I’m aware I’ve seen the same pattern happening at pretty much every place that I’ve worked at since.

The utopian city of Atlantis sunk due to bidet overuse.

Give up on life. Hope for reincarnation so that I can do better the next go-around.

They used end-to-end encryption where the sender stuffed the message into one end of a pigeon and the receiver would pull it out of the other end. The opposing forces didn’t have the time to check every single pigeon for intel so it did the trick until some genius decided to standardize putting an “Intel Inside” sticker on the fastest carrier pigeons.

Semi-related anecdote…

During the debates my wife made a joke that Biden is so old he’s not even a Boomer. We then gave each other a look and pulled out our phones to check. Turns out it’s true, he is from the “Silent Generation”.

Same, except I turn it into farts.

Is Lemmy less bad or more bad than a typical open source project?

Vanilla Sky! It’s a mind bending movie about a lucky man’s life that many of us could only dream of. That life quickly turns into a waking nightmare when the man’s jealous lover takes her own life with him inside the moving car. His nightmare of a life then melds into an actual dream. That dream then slowly transforms into a nightmare. All the while the main character doesn’t know what is real and what isn’t.

This all leads to an absolutely spectacular cathartic release for the main character when he finally understands what’s happened to him in the last 10 minutes of the film.

Did I mention it was mind bending? One of my favorite movies by far.

I have been more active on Lemmy these last few weeks than I have been the prior 10 years precisely because I feel like I am interacting with humans again.

Thank you for what you’re doing!

Different users would see unique ads. So your ad could be 12 seconds long while my ad is 30 seconds long. A timestamp based skip would no longer work universally.

I’ve had the same thought before but then I don’t want to become one of those older out of touch people. I think each generation feels like the world was in better shape when they were younger. But the truth is that many of the young kids today will look back on 2023 with the same fondness and nostalgia as I do when I think about the 1990s. Back in the day older people would warn us that video games and television would rot our brains. Now we warn our kids that TikTok will do the same. Everything is always getting faster and faster but young people are adaptable and I think they’ll find their way.

I would buy Reddit and convert it into a Lemmy instance.

I sometimes see myself as a “Browncoat” from the Firefly universe. Fiercely loyal, scrappy, with a rebellious nature trying to live in the fringes of the system without succumbing to it.

There are anecdotal stories of people entering higher states of consciousness during near death experiences, extremely deep meditation, holotropic breathing exercises, etc.

Really creative people describe their most proud acts of creation as if the idea came from somewhere else. As if the concept arose independently and they tried their best to relay it into the real world.

As for the people on psychedelic drugs, they usually speak of the higher state of consciousness as being more real than the real world... which would make sense if our usual consciousness was a subset of something bigger.

I used Winamp all the way up until last year at which point I finally sold my gaming PC and switched over to Mac + PlayStation. Out of everything on my PC I probably miss Winamp the most!

I think you misunderstood the person above you. The servers are owned by someone, but the Fediverse as a whole isn’t. You’re both saying the same thing ☺️

Vanilla Sky! It’s a truly mind bending movie, with an absolutely perfect soundtrack. I’ve probably seen this movie more than any other. I still find personal meaning in it 20+ years after my first watch as a kid when my older brother decided to see it in the theaters and took me along. I was confused but moved by it and I didn’t know why. Love came after the second watch.

You're right, I edited my title to be less clickbaity. Apologies for that!

I relate to your comment so much. I’ve actually been trying to “go back” by making more time for myself. Simple things like taking naps, playing my console (instead of just watching YouTube videos about it), getting more physical activity in, etc. I don’t know if I’ll ever fully reconnect to my inner child but I’m closer than I was a few years ago that’s for sure.

Information wants to be fast and free. Corporations want information paywalled. It’s a fact that streaming is faster and more convenient than downloading and storing. Until we live in a society where anything is accessible to anyone at any time… both methods will need to exist, otherwise information will be lost.

On the last day of my college internship a senior VP at my little company invited me into his office presumably to get to know me prior to extending a full-time offer. To break the ice he asked me what my favorite Star Wars movie was. I smiled and replied that I could never get through any of them.

As I was uttering these words I began to notice the giant Star Wars poster directly behind the gentleman. It then dawned on me that his office was chalk full of Star Wars memorabilia.

The man did not ask me any further questions. He shook my hand, thanked me for my great work, and I never stepped foot into those offices ever again.

In the current form, it tries its best to blur the images and the parts of the article that directly reference the billionaire 😊. But I plan to add a whole suite of user options if there is sufficient interest!

I really miss this kind of silly, yet creative, politically incorrect content of the old games and internet. Way too much self censorship going on these days in my opinion. Not enough personality.

I started pwning noobs online in Quake 3 Arena on my family PC. One day my older brother’s friend saw me playing and was like “… you do know you can use the mouse to aim?”

I did not know.

I somehow had mastered controlling the character like a tank with my keyboard.

Senior year of university I was browsing my school’s intranet page late one evening when I saw an advertisement for a “developer interview day” hosted by a Fortune 25 company.

I thought what the heck and filled out the application. Upon submitting the form, I got an error saying that my GPA did not meet the minimum requirements for the position.

I kept bumping up my GPA until the submission went through.

Ended up working at that company for 5 years!

“This sentence is a lie” sounds false but is actually true. I think?

Missed opportunity for you to say 'what is "x" and y?'

I’m conflicted. I really appreciated the quote at the beginning but the actual article seems so poorly written. Grammatical errors, run-on sentences, etc. Gave up half way through.

Orcs Must Die was one of the last series that my friend and I played in co-op. We went from League (burn out) to recapturing some true gaming magic thanks to these games. I don’t play multiplayer these days but thanks for reminding me to give the 3rd entry a solo try.

Yes, this is what the + and - are for! One could be LGBTQ-Blacks for example.

I will say that you have to be really careful with your order of operations if you happen to be racist against two or more minorities though.

For instance, LGBTQ(-Muslims)(-Jews) would imply that you support both Muslims and Jews due to the rules of multiplication. Since most racists are not good at math it is recommended for you to only target one minority as the primary object of your hate whenever possible.

I think I’m the only person in the universe who is actually looking forward to the PlayStation Portal handheld being released in a couple of weeks. I loved the Backbone One but it was annoying having to take the case off every time I wanted to play on my phone. The PlayStation Portal will fit my use case very well.

I can completely relate! I sometimes enter states of depression or anxiety without seemingly any triggers. I could be having a great evening and then wake up the next morning feeling anxious or numb. It's like my subconscious is bubbling stuff up to let me know that it's not happy but my modern life has made me so disconnected from my own feelings that I don't even understand what it wants.

Home Alone 2 for me! There is something super cozy about the snowy New York City setting. Especially when I was younger I really appreciated those vibes.

Given such a feature, I imagine it would be technically possible for a community moderator to issue a ban on the anonymous account (and thus the underlying Lemmy account) without the true username or email being exposed to the moderator?

The evil instance owner is a whole different story, but if such a thing ever came out the instance would be abandoned and blacklisted naturally, wouldn’t it?
